Career Exploration

I attended the internship/goal setting workshop on Thursday. Thank you William and Yu for telling me about it, and more thanks to Tony Chiu for telling them about it. Anyway, just like what the name suggests, this workshop talked about different types of internships, what to look for, how to get started, etc. We were given a booklet to keep in case we needed references in the future, such as how to go about writing a resume, how to find internships, our learning objectives (or what we want to get out from the internship), and the list goes on — it’s a really helpful booklet! I’ll probably use it often in the future. Wait on second thought, I better do a double take to make sure I didn’t misplace it hahah (joking joking! of course I wouldn’t lose it within a few days after I got it). Oh yea, and we were also recommended to utilize the Starr Career Development Center website in finding internships since we all have an account, although I’m not sure about mine since I’ve never logged on.

But in general, I thought this workshop was informative, though a bit long. Well, I guess it’s better to be more detailed and specific than to leave everyone to figure everything else by themselves. If I ever want someone to help/guide me in writing a resume, or give me a mock interview, I’ll be sure to keep the Starr Career Development Center in mind.

Internship & Résumé Workshop

I went to the STARR Career Development Center’s Workshop on finding and applying to internships on Thursday, October 22 and we were greeted and spoken to by Theresa Conway, the Internship Coordinator at the SCDC. We were told about the different kinds of internships that existed (paid, non-paid, school credit internships, leadership programs, full-time and/or part-time); the corporations, firms, and organizations that offered them; and what tools and databases we ca n utilize to find and apply to these über-competitive internships. In order to guide us along, we were given the Undergraduate Internship Manual, a 56 page booklet on internships, résumés, interview tips, résumé and cover letter examples and formats, and networking. If you don’t have one, I would recommend you get one at the Career Development Center if they carry any extra copies. The workshop was lengthy, running from 12:30 to 2:00, but it was informative, well organized and truly time well spent.

Because I’m Bored-

So today, I had to go to math class because the prof. wanted to make up the class we missed when he was absent. We spent like almost the entire class sketching a curve. Only like 10 people showed up, but it was interesting,.. I kind of expected more people to come, I mean,.. who doesn’t like math?? The vc building is really… empty and quiet, I’m guessing that its always like this on fridays. But I like it. And then I had a really delicious chocolate danish from the cafeteria. Mei didnt really like her salad. Because I needed to pass time, Mei and I went to the game room and to our surprise, Dorisukoru– san was there too! We played some soccer on the little table, and some ping pong.  I never played it before so I sucked, but I’m sure other people could tell. It was fun though! And then I went swimming with Eleanore. (This time, I wasn’t reallly staring at the pool, but swimming for once.) The swim team was practicing too. They were really fast. This guy had a really cool neon green/yellow/orange patterned- almost-suit. The old man in the next lane was able to swim continuously without stopping as much as I did!! That was very sad. Hope everyone had a happy friday. I am not bored anymore.

Happy weekend everyone!!

Personal Enrichment Workshop

So me and some of the other guys decided to go to this workshop in the seventh floor of the library building in the Newman office. They were giving out free food and drinks but i couldn’t get any due to me being a bit late. There was a woman on the stage talking who introduced a man and he introduced the main guest, the author of some book. I’ve noticed that there were two cameras always looking on stage and a good amount of audiences. The main star of the show was more interesting than expected, he had a good sense of humor even though I didn’t understand half of it. Also, he read some parts of poems or books, his own books that he wrote I’m assuming and they were pretty interesting besides one of them which just dragged on. After two hours which actually didn’t feel that long, he was done and he took questions which took another thirty minutes since he was very informative with his answers. However, we had trouble finding someone who was supposed to sign our agendas for participating in this event. In the end, I think we let some random lady sign our books and I’m not sure if she was really an organizer.

Personal Enrichment Workshop

Well, the only thing i could say about this workshop is that it went way over the time. It started at 5:45 and ended somewhat around 7: 30. Joseph O’conner was a pretty cool author judging from the way he read lines from books he wrote himself or read. The concidence is that the book i took out for freshmen seminar that we have to go through the process of taking out a book from the library was one of the six books he wrote. It’s a pity that I didn’t read it but if I have time, I would definity would read it next time.

Personal Enrichment Workshop

Yesterday, I went to the personal enrichment workshop on the 7th floor of the library building with Will, Vincent, Tony and other Tony.  When we got there we were glad to see there was free food.  There were mini sandwiches, cut up cheese and even a bar.  Unfortunately there was no alcohol (Just kidding, I dont drink).   So the thing finally started after 30 minutes after we got there.  Joseph O’Connor, the writer was actually pretty good.  He put me to sleep in a good way.  I was up really late the night before doing my English paper and his voice was pretty soothing.  If the chair was more comfortable, I would have actually fallen asleep.

P.S.: I really liked his somewhat of an accent.

Personal Enrichment Workshop

Today I attended the 5:30 personal enrichment workshop with Tony, Tony, Vincent, and Yu.  At first it did not look like a workshop but apparently it was.  It reminded me of a press confrence.  Well in this workshop they introduced a writer who is a professor at Baruch, Joseph O’Conner.  Most of the time he spend reading from some of his books or from books he enjoyed.  over all it was pritty boring to listen to and very very long.  He did read a poem he wrote about New York City and Baruch that I enjoyed alot.  (i asked him to email it to me so i could reread it myself) It was a little less than 2 hours!  It was dark by the time we got let out and we had trouble finding out who was signing our planners.  Glad i got it over though.

Enrichment Workshops

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to take the time to emphasize the importance of blogging about your enrichment workshops. In order to pass this course, each and every one of you is REQUIRED to blog on each workshop that you attend.  I will personally contact those who have not yet done so.

Until then, please be sure to attend the workshops!

Annual Student Services Fair Fall 2009

Well, the student service fair was crowded as expected. It didn’t really answer any of my questions since there was a huge crowd of people just waiting to get their card (raffle ticket card) punched.  But I did find that that I still have a chance to get into cuny honor at baruch that I got rejected from last year. =D, so I guess I got a goal in college now other than getting a good gpa.
