10/8/09’s workshop

One that day, I went to the workshop and there was a lot of people.  They had to end up pulling in a stack of chairs.  Because of the huge number of people attending the workshop, I didn’t really pay attention to anything that was going on.  I was talking to my friends the whole time.  I did heard about dealing with relationships or something like that.  And when it ended, and time for name signing in the student planner, everyone rushed out…

student services at Baruch

Date attended: October 13

I was excited to see what this workshop had to offer, and I was especially looking forward to inquiring about the Starr Career Development Center. It seemed like a lot of people showed up, obviously most of whom just wanted to fulfill their freshmen requirements (I admit I did too), and it seemed like a very friendly and inviting atmosphere. There were many tables set up, such as ones for the Writing Center, Academic Advisement, Team Baruch, and many more–there’s just too many to name.

I found out that we needed to get 10 hole punches in our ticket in order to get our passports signed, so I went around the tables trying to get them as fast as possible. When I approached one of the tables I just handed them my ticket, without realizing that I had to ask a question or express some kind of interest in their department for them to punch the hole in my ticket. So I just made up a question on the spot, however my question did not pertain to their particular department and they directed me to another table–but I got my hole punched anyway so that’s good 🙂 I had to think of questions to ask before I went to one of the tables, in case they asked so that I would be prepared, so that was a task in itself. At some tables the people didn’t care if I asked a question or not, and just hole-punched my ticket, so that saved me the trouble of thinking of a question for a department which I really didn’t care about.

When I had finally gotten 10 holes punched in my ticket, I dropped it in a box along with the other tickets, got my passport signed, and jetted out of there. Although I didn’t get much out of this workshop, after asking why students aren’t allowed to double major in the business area, I learned that Baruch wants students to be well-rounded, and exposing them to other areas, such as liberal arts, gives them the opportunity to explore subjects outside their major, which they could possibly take an interest in, opening their minds to something that they never thought they would like.

That basically sums up my experience at this workshop.

Annual student services fair fall 2009

This workshop reminded me of the street fair on aug 27.  There was a raffle and we needed to hole punch a raffle ticket.  Like the street fair on aug 27, I never got to stay for they to announced the raffle winner.  I got too hungry and went to get FOOD. yummmm…

Student Service Fair

Today I went to the Student Service Fair. It seems like a lot of students attended this event. I hope Iwin the waffle ( bwahahahas). I learned that there is math tutoring available in groups of 3-4, that I can get a receipt for the tuition and that team coaches will accept people trying out based on their times.  It was an interesting experience to throw questions at the staff and have them answer.

Student Life

I have not posted an update for the first workshop that I attended, in which, almost all freshmen attended.  It was the Freshman Reception and it was short and boring.  What I remember about this event was that the organizers weren’t prepared for such a large appearance of freshmen.  Refreshments were served but unfortunately, it was not enough for all.  This reception provided useful information about majors, minors, and required classes that freshmen need to take, thus it was helpful and useful.

Academic Enrichment

ok today I attended this workshop, it included many programs and services that are provided by Baruch.  It was a small room containing many students and all that needed to be done was to get 10 punches on a card to quality for attendance in the workshop.  I got all my holes punched in less than 20 minutes and I was excited about that.  So far I have two workshops fulfilled and wish to attend the last six within the last two and a half months we have left.

HELP?

hey guys i have a few questions and it’d be great if you all can answer:

1)are there any other workshops that are coming up that anyone will be attending?

2)those of you who have attended a library workshop, where in the library is it held?

3)for any or most workshops, is it necessary to stay the whole length of time suggested or can u just get your paper signed during the middle of the workshop or something?

Thanks in Advance!

Personal Enrichment Workshop

Yeeees, another workshop entry from me on the same day. What a productive night.

On Thursday I went to the workshop for “Managing Relationships in College.” I found this helpful because the presenter (speaker?? I don’t really know what to call her) spoke about how important it was to network and make friends right now in college. Who knows, these connections can lead to big things in life. It’s important to really get involved in extracurricular activities/clubs  as well, though I have yet to do that… but I’ll get to it eventually! And then she asked the audience to raise their hands if they met new people in Baruch. After that was an activity! We were supposed to introduce ourselves to 5 new people in the room and I just talked to those sitting around me, though I forgot most of their names by now. I think I remember a Sam… and an Alexandra? Yea, it’s really hard to just introduce ourselves with just our names and then move on.

Well, then the speaker wanted everyone to get up and meet people far away from where they were sitting, probably because people were already sitting next to their friends (me included, but hey! I didn’t cheat, I looked away from them. I’m such a good friend). Well all I can say is… it’s hard to memorize names. Though the most notable thing I can remember was a guy wearing a Death Note shirt, because I love Death Note! I still forgot his name though. I admit, I know I was “meeting new people” wrong. Like, instead of trying to say hi to five different people, it’s better to just meet one person and have a long conversation with. Well that’s what I think anyway. Easier said than done. It definitely takes a lot of time for me to open up to people but maybe others are just that outgoing (:

We also talked about relationships. People were supposed to get into groups of three to talk about past experiences or problems dealing with their boyfriend/girlfriend. I tend to avoid that kind of topic entirely. Others mentioned their conflicting schedules and how the couples were trying to adjust to college life (going to different colleges, etc).

But yea, it was a nice workshop. Gives me a few goals… (ex: join a club, be more outgoing, get my memory up to par)

Arts at Baruch Workshop

Umm… I’m not sure how in-depth I’m supposed to talk about workshops but here’s to the second one anyway.

On Tuesday, I went to the tour in Sidney Mishkin gallery. Sophia mentioned there’s one planned for November 3, and I’ll probably go there too because… well you’ll see why! Overall, I thought the tour was interesting. I’m a mediocre picture taker so seeing different perspectives/aspects/angles used in photography made the tour worthwhile. The tour guide only selected a few photos to talk about but I guess that was due to time constraints? Afterall, the tour was meant to be a short.

Well anyway, since I can’t remember the specific names of the photographs, I’ll try to describe them the best I can. The first photo the tour guide talked about was a black and white shot of a landscape with trees. She asked the group what made the picture “quiet” or “still” (actually I don’t remember if this was the correct wording, but something along those lines?) The next photograph was one of two fishermen each standing on a boat. Contrary to the first photograph, the tour guide asked everyone what gave the photograph movement. The third photograph was one with four nude bodies lying down. I can honestly say that that wasn’t what came to mind when I first saw it — you’re going to have to see it for yourself! And lastly, the tour guide talked about a photograph taken from an aerial view. She said that as more technology advances, the more techniques/perspectives in taking a picture (again… I don’t remember the exact wording, but I hope that’s what she was getting at).

After that, we were all free to look around the rest of the gallery. In the end, all I want to say is… I love it! I never knew there was an art gallery until this workshop actually (my friend led the way) and I’m happy there is one!
