Academic Success recap

Last week we discussed in great length the current problems that many of you are experiencing in your current classes. Afterwards we regrouped and came up with some possible solutions for everyone to try out for the remainder of the semester.

For this blog, write a “Dear Self” letter. Include specific goals that you have for yourself over the next 3 or so years that you’ll be in college; what do you hope to accomplish? What are the habits that you need to kick or the areas that need most improvement in order for you to achieve your goals?

As always, be as creative as you wish!

    dear stef,
over the next three years i hope to first of all finish and have all the credits i need to graduate. i really am looking forward to the next semster and the more interesting classes i am goin to have to take. i plan to keep putting more effort into ma school work and hope to always try and get better grades. as of now i plan to stick to my goal and learn about accountacy. some of my bad habits would be that i always leave my assingments to the last minute. i want to get rid of this habit because in the end i still have to do the work and by doing it the last minute i dont put all my thought into the assignment. i want to become a better student and that way i will be satisfied for my hard work. i also want to get to know more people and join and become an active member of ALFA with more time on my hands. =]

    Dear Self,

For the next three years of college, please try your best. Really, that’s all your parents have ever wanted. That’s also what you’ve always wanted, isn’t it? Yet, you can’t seem to stay away from those nasty habits that are found in most teenage lifestyles. Do you really think procrastinating is a good idea? I mean, back in high school, it might have been alright but college too? What about going out with friends when you should be doing something more productive– like your laundry? Well, the intent of this letter is not to make you feel bad. It’s great that you’ve been trying harder in college than you did in high school. I’m sure you’ll continue to be motivated, if not more so, to do well and get into Zicklin. I happen to know that you like being in school. You want to join clubs, make new friends, and do well in all your classes. Don’t ask me how I know; just assume a little birdie told me. Honestly, I’m all for it. Just get back on track with things, and don’t get carried away with the smaller things in your life. You will achieve a lot if you let yourself; I have faith in you.

    Your friend,
    Kelland

    Dear self,
Get over your procrastination. Enough getting up at 3am to start/finish a paper due at 10am that day. Enough spiking yourself on coffe to get through the day. Also, get more involved at school. You don’t have to go in and get out like its high school, stick around and maybe join a club or two. Finally, manage your time better. Learn to balance work/school/social life a bit better, as to not fall behind any of these subjects. Hopefully you follow my advice.

    Dear Self,
Stay focused. Next time you pick up your ipod or open facebook while writing an essay, STOP and go back to working. It might be hard at first but it will be worth it to not be finishing up your work the night before at 3am. Also, get those grades up, its only freshman year, dont you dare fail any classes.

  5. dchong says:

    Dear Self,
Over the next few years, you have to stop procrastinating. Set schedules and FOLLOW them! DO NOT watch so much TV or play on your computer.
You also have to maintain a high GPA, join clubs, and make good friends at Baruch. If you follow all these steps, you will certainly succeed.

  6. Wendy says:

    Dear Self,
You have got to stop procrastinating. Don’t say, “I’ll do it later,” or, “I’ll do on the train or during tomorrow’s lunch.” That’s not good. That is the only thing that is messing you up in your classes. You also need to try to stop using the computer for reasons other than typing up essays or reading articles for classes. NO FACEBOOK, MYSPACE, YOUTUBE, or AIM until homework and studying is done. That’s going to be hard to do all at once, but trying does not hurt. Begin little by little, and by the end of this semester, and for the rest of the semesters here at Baruch, you won’t be having many problems. Another thing, use the planner to write down everything you need to do every night. Make an organized schedule and follow it.
Remember, don’t procrastinate, use the computer when you really need it, and plan everything!!
    Good Luck Wendy!

    Dear self,
During your next three years of college life, try to be involved in as much activities sa possible. Maintain a G.P.A of over a 3.5 if you truly value your life. Make sure that you join the actuary club and try to learn as much as possible about the occupation. The one thing that I erccomend you work at is your procrasination. The later you do your work, the added burden piles on you. Please start to do your Calculus homework even if the teacher doesn’t check it. Hopefully you could learn more by doing your homework than from trying to pay attention in class. Plan to come to classes on time and be friendly to others.

    Dear Weng,
You need to follow your schedule for school and at home. First, when you need to read a book, READ THE BOOK! Do not waste time looking at the ceilings and walls. Yes, the pattens may look interesting, but that is not what you came here for. Secondly, you really need to fix your sleeping schedule at home. Do not come straight home and sleep until 8 or 9pm and then sleep again at 3 or 4 pm. Sleep 8 hours everyday like a normal person would and not split up your sleeping time into small partitions of 2-3 hours each. It is not good for you.

To Rukmani- The energizer bunny is a great example of what we all should do. Do not procrastinate. Just keep going.

  9. pmedvinsky says:

    Dear self,
Why do you hate homework so much? My only goal so far is to maintain a good GPA which should be a little bit tough because I am lazy. I need to set a strict schedule for myself and constantly motivate myself to do well.

  10. Stef says:

Excellent letters, everyone! I really enjoyed reading them.

    * Matt–the MTA sometimes messes up my schedule, as well so don’t feel bad…
    * Rukmani–you have quite a few lofty goals all set out for yourself, which is great to see! Through hard work, self-confidence and sacrifice I’m sure you’ll do well.
    * Everyone–procrastination is a motivational killer! Make a detailed schedule, stick to it and reward yourself in the end if you accomplish everything that needed to be accomplished.

  11. slu2 says:

    Dear Self,
Please try to stop procrastinating. Stop saving things for the last minute, and stop being so lazy. Maintain your social life but try to keep up your GPA too. You are here to prepare for the future, so do just that. Take advantage of what you have around you and get things done right!

  12. lcheung says:

    Dear Lok Tin,
Over the next few years, I want to do well in school and be able to keep my grades up. In order for me to do this, I need to get rids of a few habits of mine. I must stop procrastinating and keep up with my school work. I also have to stop sleeping late because I find myself falling asleep in some classes.

  13. anaraine says:

    To Rukmani and Jason,
Let’s hit the gym together. We can motivate each other. =)
    To Matt,
I think everyone’s been late to philosophy one time or another, some more than that =). Don’t be too hard on yourself.

  14. anaraine says:

    To Rukmani and Jason,

  15. anaraine says:

    Dear Amanda,
I wish you the best in your college years and although you are not doing your best so far this semester, I know you will do fine as you learn to adjust to the college lifestyle. There are many opportunities to leave your work to just go have fun, but do not forget your purpose. I’m not saying that you should be all work and no play, but try to refocus your priorities and get back on track. Try to maintain a good GPA, and get good grades because you want to do your best, not because you are competing with your peers. Last but not least, get out of the habit of procrastinating! If you leave all your work for the last minute, you will fall behind. Good Luck, I know you can do it!

  16. R.Nayyar says:

Sham’s – I think you’ve got your list working preety well for you so far!
Matt- That was amusing! However, I must disagree, lets blame the MTA for EVERYTHING!
SHAM and MATT-Lets start that club together!
Geesoo- Short and to the point. I like it.
Jason- Lets hit the gym! And you’re so right about that. My ’50 Essays’ is sitting right in front of me yet I have no idea what the essay is about.

  17. R.Nayyar says:

    Dear Rukmani,
Your here to stay for four years for the five year MBA program. AND STAY YOU WILL! This will be your biggest challenge. Taking extra classes over the summer wouldn’t be an ideal but it will be worth it in the end. To have an MBA at age 22 is a preety impressive thing in your book. So, yes. You are aiming for your best, and possibly more than your best. But YOU want to WORK HARD and have that SATISFACTION of accomplishment FOUR years from now.
Also, your going to aim to complete, not just one internship, but a few. Finding them and getting accepted into them will be yet another bundle of stress at your doorstep. Once again however, it will most definately be worth it!
So how do you plan to achieve your over-achiever goals? You’ll have to give certain thigs up along the way, mostly sleep I estimate. You’ll cut back on Television and learn to priorize more. You might also become a frequent face at the Baruch Gym. God knows those work-out adreline rushes will keep you going and going and going and going. . . and going. (Engerizer Bunny!) So, GET SET. GET READY. GO!
    Yours Truely,
    You

  18. jqiu says:

    Dear Jason,
For the next three years of your college life, try to lose some weight! Also, stop procrastinating because I’m sick of you staying up past midnight for an assignment that could have been done a week ago. It also helps to study AWAY from your computer because when you open up a book in front of your computer, your eyes are on the screen, not the pages. Knowing to play a ton of games isn’t exactly something you can put on a resume. Stop being lazy and get a job or an internship!

  19. gkim says:

    Dear Geesoo,
Stay in school and get high grades. Try a lot of things so you will know what you like. Also, do not be late to class. I do not really need anymore from you.

  20. mfong says:

    Hello Matt,
I have noticed that you have finally caught up with your reading assignments, congratulations! But, there are still other things you need to improve on. The most important one is getting to philosophy class on time! The MTA has been slow and chaotic lately but you must not let that get to you.
As for things to improve on for the future… One thing you must work on is getting more involved with the school community. Your resume isn’t exactly shining at this moment, so doing something like starting your own club will be a major boost. Also, you need to make more friends, friends that will be there to study with, and other friends that you will want to keep long relationships with. Also, there will be some people you will want to avoid. These people are those that will try to be your friends but they either are using you to their own advantage or they are just annoying and not beneficial at all. Especially watch out for the annoying ones because they mess with your mind and then you will be distracted. What you really have to do about those students is use your people skills. When you are one-on-one with them, just tell them straight out what his problem is. Well Matt, now that you know what you have to do, go do it!

    Dear self,
For the next three years of my college life, I hope to attain and maintain a high GPA, hopefully over 3.5. Other goals include making alot of friends, joining clubs, and becoming a part of Baruch. I hope to accomplish these goals by studying hard, getting along with peers, and joining clubs in which I have interest. I might even start my own club. I need to stop procrastinating, and start getting my work done on time. I need to start participating in class discussions, because that’s where I always fall short. I plan on creating a wide network of friends around the whole college, and I will join alot of clubs.
