Culture and You

Hello everyone,

For our first in-class meeting on Wednesday we went over a Powerpoint presentation that focused on the culture of college. I think one of the main things that stood out during that presentation was the reoccurring theme of diversity.

For our first blog entry I’ve created a question that enables each one of you to give a little insider tip to your fellow classmates about who you are and where you’re coming from in a more personal sense. Please answer the following question by clicking the “comment” tab below:

  • If you were an I-Phone application, which would you be and why? Is this a made-up “app.” or is it one that is currently in use? If it’s something that you created, where does the idea stem from? If it’s currently in use, what is your connection to the application?

Be as creative as you want and remember to follow the 4-6 sentence guideline. Grammar is your friend so be sure to acknowledge it, as well =)

Enjoy!

Hope I didn’t miss the deadline, for all the procrasinators out there posting last minute at 1am the night before should still count imo! If I were an IPhone App I would definitely be a movie player. The only expierence Ive had with an Iphone was using it during the most boring job in the world (grading essays/tests + retyping textbooks to word). My friend and I would sit there and watch movies for hours everyday to deal with the boredom. Not sure If I could have worked FT this summer w/o the movie app, and Tap-Tap lol.

  2. khuang says:

Shamima, I love Tap Tap! I’d play you in Extreme. >:]

  3. khuang says:

Hey, guys. If I were an iPod/iPhone application, I’d be Dactyl. You play Dactyl by tapping with your finger on bombs which turn red from their original black color. Your objective is to not tap outside of the bomb area or on the wrong bomb(s). Dactyl is fun to play when you’re bored or not, addictive, and a bit silly. I say ‘silly’ because it’s such a simple game to play and its simplicity makes you wanna rip your hair out of your head when you mess up. Even though I like other apps (like Tap Tap or Cooking Mama), I always play Dactyl first.

Great job to those who contributed and met the deadline! We have some very interesting and unique people in this class! Like most of you, I don’t have an I-Phone but I marvel at what a simple little handheld device can do. Pretty amazing.

If I were an i-Phone app. I would probably want to be the ESPN app. because I love sports (go Yankees, Giants and Rangers!) or I would create my own Grey’s Anatomy app. because it’s my absolute favorite show.

Sherri — I’m a HUGE fan of food, too (who isn’t, honestly?) so if I ever got an i-Phone that would be in my top 5 to download
David — I think you’d make a lot of Baruch students happy if that ever worked out!

    yea it was’nt locked… lol
If i were an I-Phone application i think i would be an application that just really download random musik ( yes i spelled it with a “K” because it looks kool… lol). I enjoy listening to any type of music really. i would sit down at my computer and would just click on the “wats new” button on limewire and download something that catches my eye. If i like it i would keep it, if not in the trash it goes. I love listening to music and i am currently without my i-pod because my headphones broke. if i had my headphones you really wouldn’t catch me without one of them in my ear.

Sorry. I meant to say your.

  7. athomas1 says:

    To wlam:
I think you should listen to one of Jay-Z’s song called the death of auto tone. Maybe it might change you perspective on wanting that application.

If I were an I-Phone Application, I would choose the Parrot application. I was marveled when I saw this application on my cousins I-phone. Since I have a slight fear of holding birds in my hand, I have to admit that this is the most brilliant application I have seen. This function allows you to have a parrot that repeats every word or sentence you say. It’s like having a pet without the biting or feeding problem. I know its sounds pretty useless but it is really fun, especially when you are surrounded by people and they start to look around for a parrot.

The Urban Spoon app sounds cool. Would you tell me how to cook different types of foods? If that’s the case, I would definitely get this app. I used to just watch the FoodNetwork, and I’ve really wanted to try to cook. But just looking at recipes or watch people cook does not help me much. If my phone would tell me what to do one step at a time it would be great. I would finally be able to cook something different, and probably would taste delicious!! =]

  10. Wendy says:

    to R.Nayyar,

I would definitely use that application. I need someone or something to be pushing me to do exercise. I would really like to try myself, but that just does not happen. Since I always have my phone with me, it would be good for me to have an application that helps me. That would be the way to get my parents to stop bugging me about always having my phone. I would tell them that I need it to help me lose calories! haha =]

  11. jqiu says:

If i were an I-Phone Application, i would be the Paper Toss application. This application involves you shooting crumpled paper balls into a garbage can while a fan is blowing the paper ball left or right with a certain amount of force and it is currently in use. I would be this application because I can imagine my future job; working in a boring office answering the phone and dealing with customers. In the meantime, i would probably be shooting paper balls into a garbage can to entertain myself.

  12. dchong says:

    To pmedvinsky:
I also enjoy using youtube. Whenever I miss something on TV, I am pretty sure I will find it on youtube. I can also watch videos and listen to music. I think that is great.

  13. dchong says:

If I were an I-Phone application, I would probably be a scientific and graphing calculator with a listening system. Since my favorite subject is math, a calculator would be the perfect match for me. With this new listening system, I can listen to your math problems and help you solve them. Instead of creating yourselves some headaches, just ask me. Do not hesitate! Remember that whenever you need help with math problems, I will hopefully be there in your I-Phone to help you.

  14. lcheung says:

If i were an iPhone application, i would simply want to be the iPod application. I like to listen to all genres of music and I listen to music wherever i go. I listen to music almost everyday and i can’t imagine the world without it. Music helps me relax and get rid of stress throughout the day.

Although I don’t have the autotune app as of now, I also believe it would be an awesome app to have for fun. I can imagine myself singing with the autotune app in the bathroom while taking a shower while my grandma (who wouldn’t recognize my voice) take her time wondering who snuck into our bathroom just to sing.

  16. wlam says:

If I were an I-Phone app, I would most likely choose being the safari app. It is the application that allows me to surf the entire World Wide Web and it is also the app I use the most. I can look up anything and everything that interests me or need more information on. It also lets me check and send email which is very convenient. Due to my computer at home malfunctioning frequently these past few days, I love this app even more because it allows me to complete most of the assignments given to me.

  17. pmedvinsky says:

I would probably be the youtube app. I just really enjoy youtube and it is my main source for music and videos. Whenever something important happens, someone uploads a video of it on youtube. Youtube can also be awesome when you are bored !

  18. Ilana says:

    Hello fellow classmates,
In my opinion, if I were an i-pod application, I would be the “tap – tap donimation” app. Like the person above, I love music and since I am a professional ballroom dancer, I use music daily for practice and/or lessons. Therefore, I have really good rhythem and I enjoy the challenge of this game. I probably play this game every time I’m on the train because it makes the time go by faster. Since I do live in Brooklyn, it takes me an hour and a half to get to school. However with this application, the trip feels much shorter.

  19. mfong says:

I’m not familiar with the I-Phone at all but I would be the “How to be a profession _____” app. Students at especially our age are trying to look for a job or career in their near future and they may or may not have something in mind yet. If they do have something in mind, they might not know what it takes and exactly what they have to do (such as take which required subjects) to get what they’re looking for. Those unsure of what they want can look into all sorts of professions and then see what might suit them best by knowing the process of how to be a ______. Personally I have been searching for some time and I’ve had many interests come and go. A career in law is what I’m seeking now but I could really use an app like the one i made up. Plus it would help countless other people too, such as unemployed adults!

  20. gkim says:

I suppose I would be the new autotone app. If you don’t know, autotune is the program that artists like T-Pain use to change their voice. It doesn’t have any inherent practical use, but it is a lot of fun. I don’t mean that I’m useless, but I think I am capable of being randomly fun. You could, for example, use this app while singing in the shower so that waking up would be easier. I think that a lot of students need that kind of help.

  21. sakter says:

Yes, Amanda I always use google also. It’s my best friend when it comes to research. And Rukmani fitness is a really good thing to focus on. I’m trying to get my little sister to lose weight, so I should download that app on my I-Touch.

  22. slu2 says:

If I were and iPhone application I think I would be Urban Spoon! I love to eat and try new food all the time. I’m always the one to suggest where to eat because I eat out a lot, so I’ve tried a lot of restaurants all over the place. Unfortunately, it’s taken a toll on my wallet to be eating so much lately, so I’m becoming my own Urban Spoon by learning to cook on my own. πŸ™‚

  23. Wendy says:

Hey! I have never used an iPhone so I don’t know what applications it has. So I went on Google to see what apps it has. “Name That Tune” app is the app that I would be. I love music and I listen to it all the time. It would be kind of easy to name any tune because I listen to wide variety of music all the time. If I could listen to music during class, I would. If you can’t figure out what the name of a song is, just ask me. I’ll be there waiting for you to press that button and say “Wendy, tell me the name of that tune,” and I will say “It’s … by …” =)

  24. R.Nayyar says:

Like Amanda, I too have not caught up to the technological advances made in the past year. For me, the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) policy works just fine and I’m happy with the simple apps on my Sony Erricson AT&T phone. However, if I were an I-Phone, I would probably be a Fitness App because I think that fitness app’s on phones help to promote healthy lifestyles. I would act as a pedometer and count people’s steps-per-day and also as a converter and tell people how many calories they’ve burn through walking/running/etc. My goal would be simple–to encourage people to raise their calories-burned numbers on a day-by-day basis. I personally have this app on my current phone and it’s been a tramendous aid to me and thus I would love to be it and help others through it.

  25. anaraine says:

oo haha well Shamima you would’ve been first if my computer hadn’t sent that in for me by accident. πŸ™‚

  26. anaraine says:

Sorry about that my computer sent that by accident I wasn’t finished yet…
Firstly, I would like to say that I do not own an I-Phone nor have I ever used one and I am unfamiliar with its applications. If I were an I-Phone I would be the Google mobile application because I use Google to find out information on anything, as do many other people in the world. I even used Google to find out that there was a Google mobile application for the I-Phone. I can always depend on Google to answer my questions unlike my sister who always says “I don’t know” to everything I ask, Google is a productive website that does not argue with me and provides me with all the information I need.

  27. sakter says:

Amanda, you beat me by 4 minutes. I was first when i started writing. πŸ™‚

  28. sakter says:

First of all I’m the first one to post a comment so, yay! If I was an I-Phone application i would be the Tap Tap Revenge app. First and foremost I love music, so it’s a part of my everyday life. You can play me in easy, medium, or maybe even in extreme mode. If you’re my friend, I’ll play in easy mode and let you win. However, if I find you annoying, I will get so extreme that you’re fingers will hurt from trying to pick up my beats. So choose your level carefully!

  29. anaraine says:

    So i guess i will go first….
