STARR Workshop

When i first walked into this workshop, I was rather skeptical. I was convinced that I wouldn’t learn anything helpful;, since I already have a full time job that i am not expecting to leave any time soon. However, I quickly realized my mistake. My current job will not be my last, and I will eventually need to apply other places. And I am glad that i got the chance to hear the STARR presentation first.

There were a lot of things I didn’t know, which made me surprised that I even got a job at all. I never realized that something as small as nail polish could effect your interview, nor did I know how important small talk is. I was very glad that we were given extra tips about writing a good resume as well.-that is something I usually struggle over. Overall, the workshop was informative and will most definitely help in the future.

Career Workshop

The workshop that we went to go see based on interview skills and how to write a resume was very helpful.  Even though I did have some prior knowledge to writing a resume and interview skills, this workshop actually helped me out even more; for instance, sometimes, when I write my resume, I forget to add an important information under the section “Skills” or “Education.”  In addition, when it comes to the interview skills, I was never taught that it was important to have small talk, because it can be helpful in the business world, or that the color of your nails can really say something about yourself.   I did think that it was thoughtful of them to provide us with copies of different types of resumes.  This will definitely be useful for me, considering that I sometimes am not sure of what I should or should not put in a resume.   I did also think that it was quite thoughtful of them to have all the information on their website as well just in case we were not able to attend the workshop or if we are not sure of something about doing an interview or writing a resume.  I also do think that it is also thoughtful of them to be able to help us find internships and work with us on our interviews.  It really does show that they want to make sure that we do well in life and in our interviews, so we can go far in life.

The discussion panel:  Dare to Engage, was very interesting, both students, faculty and panelists joined in the discussion.  It dealt with the issues of social media on the Internet and bullying.  This panel discussion was centered around the recent incident of a college student, Tyler Clementi, who committed suicide after a video was released of him and another male engaging in sexual conduct.  The actions of the persons who posted the video was discussed, also the suggestion of laws against  online privacy was introduced but the idea that these laws may hinder freedom of speech was also considered.  The panelists also advised the audience to be careful of what we post on facebook and other social networking sites.  And to also seek counselling if we find ourselves in the situation of being bullied or harassed.

This workshop really left the audience with a lot to think about.  Especially with  society’s response to issues involving LGBT (Lesbians Gay Bisexual and Transgender) people.

It was quite interesting to finally meet the author who wrote the novel that we had to read over the summer; however, I did think that I would just see the author discussing his novel.  I did not expect to see four or five other people as well.  I felt that Charles N. Li had so much more to say, but he had to limit himself to how much he could say, because he had to consider what the other panelists wanted to say and leave them some time to talk.  However, overall, what each panelist, including the author, had to say was quite interesting.  Each panelist pretty much talked about identity—finding where your home is and who you are.  What was absolutely so great about this panel discussion was that every student was able to connect with what was being said, which was the topic of identity.  Regardless if you were born in the United States or outside of the United States, everyone goes through of phase of wondering who they are and what their home is.  For most of us, we are trying to find out our identity now through college, especially since now, college helps us to broaden our horizon and see more and what’s really out there in the world.  Before I went to college, I thought I knew who I was like I knew the back of my hand; however, when I saw the back of my hand, there were some spots on my hand that I was not sure how it got there.  Now that I am in college, I am trying to find out what these spots are—who I really am and what is out there in the world for me and what I can do in this life.  Basically, it’s time for me to do some soul-searching, which is what I am currently doing.  I still have not found some of the answers to my questions, but I do believe that I am getting close.  All in all, I do believe that this workshop has been quite helpful to some of us, because it has showed us that we are not the only ones who are trying to find ourselves or where our home is and that college may be the answer to all of this.

This workshop was a great review of interview skills and how to write a resume.  The speaker was very enthusiastic and her professional dress also gives testimony to what she was talking about.  She gave basic information on how to dress for an interview, such as, male and female need to be dressed in suits and nail polish shouldn’t be worn unless it a natural color.  And she gave an example of how small talk is necessary and helpful in the business world.  The speaker also refreshed our memories on the types of resumes and the basic layouts.  While doing all this, she encouraged us repeatedly to check out the Starr Career Development Center or  at least visit the site.

This workshop was very helpful.  The revision was needed and appreciated.  She also asked and answered student question to get us engaged and to get feedback for her own future purposes. Overall it was a good and useful presentation.

We finally got to meet Charles N Li at this workshop. It was an honor to meet the man who wrote the Bitter Sea, the book that was a major part of our first semester and transition from high school to college. Although I didn’t stay very long because of other responsibilities, I enjoyed listen him talk about reality and identity, and his struggles and the changes he had to make in his life, which was a very emotional story, one that I felt that everyone in the audience could relate to in some way, as we all have had some struggles through our life and had to change to overcome them, although our problems were not to the degree of his.

Career Exploration Workshop

Luckily for me, I had already been to one of these career advisement workshops before, so I knew pretty much everything that was being said in the workshop about how to dress, the types of questions interviewers would ask, and etiquette before being interviewed, during, and after. The workshop I went to actually wasn’t a workshop, it was more like a lecture, and it was from my dad. He taught me all that I needed so that during my interview, at which became my first job at Winthrop University Hospital, I was able to answer the questions confidently.

One thing I took away from this workshop though, was learning of the STARR Career Development Center. Now I know where to look to find internships and jobs that can build my resume and help my references for when I search for a full time job in the future

I feel quite fortunate to have a job. In times like these, it is difficult to find a job. One of the first steps to finding a job is a resume. Although I have a lot that filled my resume already, I am glad that I attended this workshop. I would have never known there could have been so many more options to show on a resume.

Along with information on resumes, the workshop informed us that there was a STARR career search system online. I have a feeling that I will be coming to this service some time soon and I am glad that this service is here for me. Why? Internships. I am certain that I will be looking for an internship soon and why not turn to STARR?

I am actually very glad that I came to this workshop. Yes, at first I complained. Actually, we all did. Why do we have to go to these workshops? Well, it turns out that this was very useful and informative. It was truly worth staying for.

Academic Enrichment

This panel discussion was definitely a unique first for me. This was the first time that I have met an author. I felt very honored to have the opportunity to meet Charles N. Li. “The Bitter Sea” was a great autobiography about Charles N. Li’s life as he grew up. It was quite shocking to hear this man speak; the man who went through all that from the reading we all read over the summer. As I read the book during the summer, I know I have frequently wondered how Charles N. Li dealt with the numerous obstacles that he had in life. Everything that had happened in the book were real. They were real-life situations that he had to deal with. They were a part of reality and Charles N. Li explained to us that everybody has a different view on reality.

After hearing this panel discussion, it really made me think about who I am. Yes, we all did a monologue on who we were but I feel that there is more to it. Once again, I ask myself: “Who am I?”

Over the summer we were given The Bitter Sea to read, by Baruch. At first I hesitated to read this book, because I’ve never really enjoyed reading as much as I should have. However, once I started reading the book I began to get really into it. The way Charles N. Li wrote was really captivating. I almost felt like I was in his story. The emotions he wrote of were really real and raw.

At the panel, we got a closer and more intimate glimpse of the man behind the book. He was just as funny in person as he was portrayed in the book. The panel also featured a few other people who talked about their academic experiences, which was also quite interesting. I always like to hear about other people’s stories of the childhood and education. The panel was very informative and entertaining.
