Conformity

It’s inescapable. Even non-conformists are stereotyped into their own category of people, be it rebels or misfits. In the end, we all conform to some type of standard. Pure genuineness may only be found in children. The common phrase “kids say the darndest things” holds true in the sense that kids really do think outside the box. Those cute answers and unrestrained comments are words of complete truth, untainted by other people’s ethics and are free from seeking acceptance. Kids are the true non-conformists in our judgmental society and are the only ones able to liberate us from the cycle of reused ideas and lack of innovation. Talk to a kid someday and see how much inspiration one can give to an artist. Unfortunately… they do grow up.

  1. i disagree because to say children are untainted is to assume that all children grow up without being affected by their environment. i find the opposite to be more unapparent to those that only see what can be seen, kids are more easily accepting of what they are told or are raised to believe since they are like a blank canvas. Paint it with your own colors and the child will become a puppet nothing more but your own creation. Only after growing up and freeing itself of restraints the child/adult will decide for themselves what “truths” they will believe in. Are children really able to see outside of the box? or are they just more accustomed to seeing things very plainly while we go through the habit of over examining things too deeply? Occum’s razor?

  2. conforming is the alignment of personality to a social standard. sure enough kids will be affected by their environment and progress through their stages of growing up influenced by his/her surroundings. are you saying that anyone who so much as listens to other people’s opinions are conformists? similarly a mentally disabled person cannot conform to a given standard due to his inability to choose and understand his actions. we can label them in our minds, but to call them conformists would be absurd. a child’s mind is underdeveloped and what they’re going through does not constitute as conformity, but rather a reluctant climb that’ll eventually lead to them nestling into their respective labels. that’s where kids will bridge over into conformity.

  3. well if you want to argue rhetoric we can argue that everyone conforms because no one is truly unique in one aspect. even the mentally disabled are conformists. their physical restraints don’t stop them from conforming if they choose to overcome their disabilities are they not conforming? you link being influenced as not conforming but then can anyone really be called a conformist? since we all make choices and decisions depending on what has influenced us and the environment we live in? children are the ones to conform the most easily due to how easily they are introduced to new ideas. Never had a point in your childhood where you wanted to play all the new games just cause everyone else was into it? or maybe just cause commercials and the media made it seem “cool”? 😛 how did your classes go lol

  4. well if you want to argue semantics, we can argue that everyone is unique. im more concerned with innovation and new ideas moreso than aligning oneself with a set of standards. and yes children are the ones to conform the easiest, but they havent conformed yet. hence the negativity on my part about children growing up. there is a pure, untainted stage.

my classes are doing fine =P. calculus is killing me cause im slacking mad hard on work. havent opened my textbook for a bullet.

  5. but we know no one is unique in one aspect. we CAN argue everyone is unique but thats besides the point because we can still assign them to a category or group where they have conformed. you admitted children conform and to deny their growth is to be ignorant. to look at a small time slice and instead of a slightly larger picture we could then argue that people before they conform are all non-conformists. this would mean even an adult who is in a transitional stage who has yet to conform is part of the non-conformist group therefore breaking your argument that only children are truly free. and you have yet to address why it is pure genius to not conform. doesnt this rob the success and glory of those who have achieved a lot in their life time? how can we assume that there is a pure untainted stage without making the assumption that all humans are born good? to use an assumption to support an argument?
