Who is this kid?

by kevin.sanichara

Who am I, thats an interesting question. Just to give some info I’m half Guyanese and half Trinidadian. I’m originally from Astoria, Queens, but I live in Forest Hills now. Some of my favorite things to do are play basketball which is my favorite sport(GO KNICKS!!!!), hang out with friends whenever I get a chance, and try and do good for myself and others who are in need. I love music a lot, specifically hip-hop from the 1990’s. But I also like R&B, rock, pop, reggae, pretty much everything except Death Metal. I’m trying to become a DJ on the side which is something I think is pretty cool and a great way to get to know people and go to parties. I am kinda shy and pretty quiet at first, but after you know me I can’t stop talking and people always say I’m a great friend and a very fun guy to be around. While at Baruch i plan to study Marketing and Finance and become a Stockbroker one day.

Concerns:

Well I am pretty concerned about a lot of things here now that I’m going to college. Not to many people in my family went to college and for those that did went to ivy-league schools outside of New York City so this will be different from what they’ve experience since I’m going to be the first to stay in New York, so i have no clue what to expect. I know I won’t have the traditional college experience with all the partying, homecomings, parades and whatever, but I feel its good i stayed in the city because I can’t picture myself being in the middle of nowhere for months and months. I just wanna make lots of friends, fit in, and get good grades those are some concerns I have.  I am really concerned about Math class. I am not good in any kind of math beyond (2+2) so learning “sin2 to the x power over the matrix root of pi”, ……..Come on, when will I ever need to know this REALLY!!!!!! Pre-Cal is not in my range at all. Plus I don’t like the fact that if you fail the final that you fail the entire class. Thats throwing lots of hard work down the drain if that unfortunately happens. I just have to work harder. Plus time management is tough. Thats something I need to work on.

Differences from High School and College:

Well I can text in class without hiding my phone. Also I can go out to eat for lunch instead of eating crummy high-school cafeteria food. Plus the biggest difference is that i’m finally back in co-ed school. I went to an all-boys Catholic High school (Holy Cross) in Flushing, NY for 4 years. The kids in my high school were pretty “de-de-de” and I have no clue how they graduated. The kids in college are more laid back, well-mannered, and polite which is who I am, since high school who was the complete opposite. Finally the workload is a lot more than I anticipated. I never got any homework in high school and it was a joke. I find myself doing tons of work and staying up till midnight completing assignments. But college is a lot more fun and I love the fact I’m surrounded by smarter people, its easier to get to, everyone is pretty friendly and I can’t wait for the years to come here!!!!
