Malisa Basic-PERFORMING DIASPORAS: IDENTITIES IN MOTION project is “Who Do You Think You Are?”

by malisa.basic

A. First off, My name is Malisa Basic.  It is who I am, always was.  Throughout the years in my life, I have consistently been discovering new things about my self that I did not know prior to these times. There are certain traits and characteristics about me that often contradict one another.  I may be the laziest person I know, and always resort to procrastination when it comes to almost ANYTHING but I am also one of the most determined individuals I know.  Impossibility does not exist, if something will take me hours to finish, I will complete it(only difficult part is actually trying to get motivated to start.)  Though accomplishment is a great feeling, I try to set realistic goals for myself.  I am outspoken, and truthfully sometimes even opinionated.   These are things I know are true to who I am currently today, even though there may be various other aspects of my personality I have yet to realize.

b.) My top three main concerns as a Freshman at Baruch include succeeding academically, social interaction, and managing assignments in a timely manner.  Since I am a freshman, I do not know what to expect from Baruch professors and their classes.  Though professor and course is different, I know that college expectations may differ greatly from high school, including everything from class lectures, taking valid notes, and doing well on essays and exams which results in a main concern of mine.  In addition, I hate getting to meet new people, and adjusting to a different environment from what I am used to.  The idea of starting all over again after already going through that process only four years ago can be overwhelming.  Since I am a procrastinator, I am concerned with time management.  There is a lot more reading than high school, and completing certain assignments.  This leads me to conclude that procrastinating is definitely not the ideal option when it comes to completing college work.  It is for this reason I need to quickly find a method that will assist me to improve in this area.

c.)  What I think will make Baruch differ from my high school experience is that there are many more students, providing much more diversity in culture and personalities.  In addition, the way in which classes are taught differ in some courses.

d.)  My first year in College may change who I am because it may make me more aware of how important staying focused on education can be.  Aside from trying to earn a degree, I am expecting to appreciate the actual learning component.  Hopefully, I will create a general sense of how college is, and what I expect of myself as a student so that a stable foundation for the following  years to come is present.
