2nd meeting in the multipurpose room

by zhihao.huang | Comments Off on 2nd meeting in the multipurpose room

The second meeting we had in the multipurpose room was very interesting and helpful. I learned a lot about job interviews and resumes. I learned what i can have and what i cant have on my resume. The most important part for me was when they over the interview questions and on how you should answer the question. The also highlighted questions that you should ask after the interview. I think this is going to be very helpful later on in college. I also learned that there is a place to help you with your resumes. It nice to know that there is people to help you with all these things.

Whitney Museum

I never knew college students went on field trips but Im glad that we had one. I actually liked the trip to the Whitney Museum. It was interesting how Burchfield’s artwork was placed around the rooms. The paintings gave a time-line of his life; it represented how Burchfield matured artistically. For instance, viewers can tell by the evolution of his artworks- paintings. As he was younger, the meaning of the paintings were more simple and bold. However, as he aged, Burchfield puts more “meaning” into his works. For example, a lot of his paintings in the “Golden Years” shows signs of hope and Burchfield’s view of religion from nature.
What made this trip more special was that Burchfield’s grand-daughter was at the Whitney and she shared a cute memory that she had with her grandfather (Burchfield) with one of the paintings that was displayed. It was a great experience and fun field trip 🙂

STARR Seminar

by christie.chong | Comments Off on STARR Seminar

The second meeting of the that week was held in the multi-purpose room at vertical campus. We met at 9am and during the seminar, we were given a brief discussion about the STARR program. The STARR speakers/directors/president/vp went over key points on a powerpoint presentation. The key points were based on how or what to write on a resume and how to dress, act, and speak at an interview. I actually was aware of these key points because I took several business classes in highschool. In those courses, I had to do mock interviews and make mock resumes. Still, i think it was a good lesson for those who didnt have the knowledge of these factors or didnt have the opportunity to be taught these lessons. It is great to learn these things because it will be very useful for the future

“The Bitter Sea” – Charles Li.

by christie.chong | Comments Off on “The Bitter Sea” – Charles Li.

I thought the panel interview/presentation with Charles Li was a great idea. It gave us readers an opportunity to ask the author questions we had while reading the book. Mr. Li was able to answer the questions that some students had and it was cool that he answered questions that the students were stumbling about. Honestly, how great is it that you can actually meet the author of the book you read. I would love to have the same opportunity with Hemingway but we all know that would never happen -.- Even though the idea of meeting the author was exciting, there were some negative factors. First of all, most the classmates in our lc (LC 01) had a HUGE pysch test that during the seminar- panel presentation, everyone was studying while I was writing an English essay. Secondly, it was hard to understand what Charles Li and the other presenters were saying. There were times where Mr. Li didn’t talk into the microphone. Lastly, because the freshmen sitting on the balcony  didn’t pay attention, there were many side conversations and it was a bit roudy.  Overall, the idea of having the author speak to us was cool 🙂

Career Panel/workshop

I wasnt at the career workshop so I wouldnt know what it was really like. Although I did ask my fellow classmates and they all said that though it was a bit boring it was also helpful. They all said that the varois careers presentated at the panel were interesting and could be a potential career choice if they lookedinto it more. Though I plan to become an accountent I think I missed out on the chance to explore otyher career oppertunities by missing this panel.

Post Monologue

Truthfully after I presented my monologue I didnt feel any different. True, I was relieved that I finished the presentation but other than that there was nothing else. This oral presentation was like any other I had ever had, as such I treated it the same way I treated all my presentations , like work. Its not like I felt I had developed better presentation skills, in fact I felt i actually did pretty bad during the presentation. I was told other wise by Ana Lucia and the professor (commplements are laways nice). Still this was nothing revolutuonary.

After I presented my monologue in front of the class I felt that everyone who didn’t know me before got a better understanding of who I was and what kind of person I am. many people were pretty interested in my hobbies like that i play basketball or that i wanna learn to DJ, even how it felt like to be in an all-boys school for high school. People didn’t know I liked these kinds of things. After the monologue everyone got to know me a bit better, which was a good ice breaker. Considering I presented this monologue around the time school started it helped me develop early friendship with my fellow peers in my LC. I wasn’t nervous presenting at all, but I was just a slight summary of who I really am and when people get to know me they’ll really know who I am.

Resume/Job workshop

by thomas.pan | Comments Off on Resume/Job workshop

The Resume and job workshop that i attended was really helpful. I learned the general basics of an effective resume, which the lady clearly explained. I learned that one shouldn’t be talk about their future so much to the point that one sounds arrogant. Also wearing a conservative outfit, such as a black suit with a white shirt and red tie is appropriate attire for an interview. I also learned that the interview does not start when one begins to talk to the interviewer, but rather it begins when one walks into the building. I do not have a resume yet, and i realize i really need to create one as soon as possible. Also i really need an internship in order to enhance my resume, in hopes i can get a high-paying financial job.

Charles Li Na Panel Discussion

by thomas.pan | Comments Off on Charles Li Na Panel Discussion

I sat next to some of my friends until i came to the sudden realization that i was supposed to sit with my LC. I really tried paying attention to the speakers, especially Charles Li Na because he is really an inspiration and motivating person but their voices were really low and hard to hear, so i was half asleep during the discussion. I did notice that he looks really youthful for his age, and despite all of the hardships he endured, he seems very cheerful. That part really made an impression on me because i believe no matter how hard something is, one should always be happy and try not to stress over it.

Freshman monologue

by thomas.pan | Comments Off on Freshman monologue

I was absent too many days to create a monologue, so i am going to create a monologue right now.

I am 18 years old and the transition from high-school to Baruch is really tough. I have time management skills comparable to cow’s (If they could manage time, it would probably be really bad). I am terrible at math and i think i failed both of my tests, and i am thinking about dropping the class. I really need to study for my tests rather than trying to cram everything the night or break before the class. I have met some really cool people so far that i probably wouldn’t meet in highschool. I want to do finance by my math skills are lame. I want to become really wealthy and live a comfortable life. I am lazy and i say i want to do a lot of things such as: becoming a DJ; starting an e-business; and investing in stocks, but i still haven’t done it yet. I have no idea why i am typing this monologue on the 5th floor of a st johns dorm. I have a bottle of water to the left of my friends  laptop. My friend across from me is attempting to pick up girls whom major in pharmacy, but it is obviously not working because they are only responding with one word answers. I know he feels extremely awkward. I am not really sure of what to write but i hope this will be sufficient in terms of word count and content.
