The Career Exploration Enrichment Workshop we attended on 10/28 was extremely informative. I found it very insightful in that I was never aware that Baruch offered so many resources that could help develop my resume, interviewing etiquette, and internship searching. The DOs and DON’Ts of what to put on an effective resume really helped me know what to add to and remove from my resume such as avoiding the use of personal pronouns (I, my, etc).
The workshop also helped me to see what employers are looking for in a good employee. Because I have never been in an actual professional interview, I plan to take full advantage of the mock interview and STARR services in the near future to further my learning and advancements.

Picture this.
It was the first day of classes and I was already 15 minutes late to my first class, freshman seminar, because i got lost trying to find the FRO room. Upon coming into the hall with my friend, I glanced at my phone where I wrote down the room number and saw 3190. So i entered. And walking halfway to an empty seat, I realized I wasn’t in the right room so i left. I checked my phone again and the right room was 3195. That was my first embarrassing college experience…and my most embarrassing from the past few months. So far, college has been pretty much what I’ve expected, with the exception of a few things. The workload from school isn’t too bad (besides the hefty assignments from art), but slacking off and falling behind becomes so easy because of the pressures to keep up with other aspects of my life, like work, family& friends, and other personal responsibilities.

Baruch was very helpful at helping me learn how to fill out a resume. While at the resume speech I learned a lot of thing I never knew before. For starters I never knew it could be so simple. I always hear people complain about how much of a pain in the rear writing a resume was. People always told me it takes lots of research and a very time –consuming task to write out your grades and previous work places. Its very simple actually. First you have to write your GPA, but only put it down if its over a 3.0. This is something interesting I learned. Also write down your favorite hobbies, fields of interest and places you have worked before. Its good to put the jobs that seem more important to your new job on the top of the list to show you were most interested in it. Next write down basic information like your name, numbers you can be reached at, an e-mail, and your address. This is in case the company wants to reach you or see your previous history or file with ease. Just put these in order and in a neat, coherent order and everything should look fine with the resume.
Another thing I found interesting about the monologue was that the lady told us proper etiquette for a job interview. First of be polite, ask questions, and don’t do anything rude when your in the vicinity of the office. Like don’t chew gum or act impatient. Why is this the case; well the interview really starts the moment you step foot into the building, not when the interview actually begins. People judge your character outside of work to know if you are a good person or not. For women, its good not to show to much cleavage, but look fresh yet professional. This is best shown by wearing a proper suit, a button shirt underneath that, and a long skirt or pants. Plus don’t wear heels above 2 inches. For males, like myself, a black suit is good or a dark grey. Dark colors show power and confidence. Also a white of blue shirt is fine with a non-monochromatic tie; you don’t want that to be your main focus point. Just be friendly yet corporative and bold. This will be the keys to getting the job you want and having a good interview and resume.

Well I have to write a monologue and I’m really thinking what should I put down. Well I’m 17 years old and I really can’t believe I’m in college now. There are some similarities, but a lot more differences. For starters I can actually use my phone in class. Sometimes I still hide my phone under a desk or behind a book cause I still have that habit. I’m somewhat struggling in Math right now. I can’t really understand the teacher sometimes and it is very hard material to cover. Other than Math I’m pretty satisfied with all my other classes. Another difference is that I’m not just around boys in school anymore. What do I mean you might be asking? Well I went to an all-boys Catholic high school for 4 years. I attended Holy Cross High School in Flushing, Queens. Big differences, in college I’m surrounded by smarter and more mature people and its really diverse here, unlike my high school. Finally the workload is ridiculous at times. At least 2 days of the week I’m usually up till 2 a.m. doing Art or WebWork. I guess its more along the lines of time management. Well that’s college so far. Its hard and demanding, but still interesting and fun. College has things that can not only help my academic life, but my social life too. For starters I like comedy skits and movies, so I joined the Movie Makers club. I’m a business student who wants to be a stockbroker one day, and make lots of money. Now as I’m finishing my monologue there are some things you might not know about me. I’m Half-Guyanese and Half-Trinidadian, I love to play basketball, I want to be a DJ on the side, and I’m the kind of person who will help someone who is in need or try and make a situation better.

To start off “The Bitter Sea” by Charles Li was quite an interesting book depecting the hardships he had to face to get to where he is today. It was quite interesting to see the man in person. However we were far up in the balcony so it was pretty boring that we could not see him to well or hear him for that matter. What I did hear though was that he was inspired heavily by his passion to do better for himself, so he wrote the book to record his memoirs of how “if he can make it, anyone can”. It was quite inspirational to hear this. Overall the meeting was boring because we were far, but I did have some interest seeing him in person. After the discussion one of my friends told me she asked a question and got his autograph. If had a question that I could ask him, it wold be “What inspired you to let Baruch students read your book?”

Last week for Freshman Seminar, we experienced a career workshop. I thought this session was quite interesting and helpful because I learned many useful tips that I could use for future events such as internships and job interviews. I thought that even tips as simple as describing what clothes not to wear, and what is appropriate is important because these factors play a large factor when someone is hiring. In addition, I thought the information given about what to put on a resume is helpful, and what details to include. A positive attitude is also necessary to show how interested you are in getting the position. These are the types of workshops I actually find helpful, and would like to be apart of more because in the near future I plan on joining an internship.

The career enrichment workshop we attended las week happened to be extremely helpful. Both the speakers mentioned important things to avoid and include to create a an effective essay. Based on what they talked about, I plan on updating my resume. What the second speaker described as business attire was also helpful; I wasnt really sure about what kind of shoes are appropriate for a job interview, but she clarified.

The workshop we attended last week was ironically very useful. i thought i was very proficient in resume writing and interviewing skills, but in that short session i learned so much more. i can only imagine the amount of info i can learn by scheduling a mock interview or resume review session. Also, i got a real sense of the wealth of resources offered at Baruch. Anything i could need for applying, obtaining, maintaining and furthering career positions is at my disposal here at Baruch. I always looked at college as one of the most important lifetime investments a person could make; and it appears that by attending Baruch i will most certainly get my money’s worth. I fully intend to take advantage of all these resources.

I thought the panel discussion was quite dull and I couldn’t really hear much of what he was saying. The only the part of the discussion that stood out to me was when the woman professor at Baruch said “You acquire new identities as you get older: cultural, social, etc.” I interpreted what she was saying as as you get older and become exposed to new routines and different ways of life, you begin to discover difernt things about yourself pertaining to what you may or may not like.

I remember a someone asking charles Li a question during the panel discussing. The question was how did you get your title and does it have a specific meaning to it? Mr.Li laughed at the question and said the title came to it while he was commuting somewhere. I also think Mr.Li looks very fit for his age, i expect him to look older. He has somewhat of a accent when he spoke so i wasnt able to get too much information and i was also trying to focus on my psy test. Charlies Li was also unable to sit still. The other speakers bought out parts of there life as examples.
