Networking 101 Workshop: Making Connections

Today I went to a Workshop Networking 101. Frankly speaking, I had no idea what it was going to be about. Reserving a sit couple days before the event the only thought I had was that I needed to speed up finishing this boring mandatory stuff for the freshman seminar. Sorry, Michelle, but If something is mandatory it always seems boring and hated even if it’s not. I know you know that ;-) However, now I think about this workshop with appreciation. It turned out to be really interesting and useful. It was not something unique, but, I kept some ideas in my mind.
This workshop was connected with the career exploration. A Network in that case narrowly defined as ”an interconnected group of supporters who serve as resources for your job search and ultimately for your career.” [Thomas J. Denham] I don’t plagiarize: the definition was cited and the author mentioned ;-) Turnitin, relax! So,the main point of Networking 101 is to find ”useful” people. In career development ”useful” people would be those who can help you with an employment.
That’s why Baruch tries to teach us this stuff from the first days: be prepared, targeted, professional, patient, focused and so on. Without learning how to do this at school it’s impossible to do it at a work place. At least, it would be extremely difficult to manage yourself in short time. All these skills are shaped during the years.
But, what June, a dedicated representative at today’s workshop, told us seemed to me quite universal. The points mentioned are valid for students as well as for people with diplomas in their hands. As for me as a students ”useful” people, I think, would be friends. Friends make ”use” for each other by relations which include appreciation, joy and inspiration. So, let’s begin building our network here in Baruch!
