Title of Workshop: Rubin Museum of Art

Date: Friday Oct 15.2010

Time: 4:15-6:00

Summary of Workshop: The museum was abou the Himalayas. They had a lot of sculture on the deities of Hinduism and Buddism. They had information about how to make the sculptures and how to paint the picture. They talked about the different deities and their roles. They also talked about what the accessories and gestures meant.

Opinion: Personally I found the museum very interesting!! The deities that Himalayans believed in seemed similar to the ones that the Ancient Greeks use to believe in. The deities all represent different things. There is wrathful god who protects the Himalayans. I thought the most interesting was Durga. She is a female deity who is believed to protect the Himalayans.

Networking 101 Workshop: Making Connections

Today I went to a Workshop Networking 101. Frankly speaking, I had no idea what it was going to be about. Reserving a sit couple days before the event the only thought I had was that I needed to speed up finishing this boring mandatory stuff for the freshman seminar. Sorry, Michelle, but If something is mandatory it always seems boring and hated even if it’s not. I know you know that ;-) However, now I think about this workshop with appreciation. It turned out to be really interesting and useful. It was not something unique, but, I kept some ideas in my mind.
This workshop was connected with the career exploration. A Network in that case narrowly defined as ”an interconnected group of supporters who serve as resources for your job search and ultimately for your career.” [Thomas J. Denham] I don’t plagiarize: the definition was cited and the author mentioned ;-) Turnitin, relax! So,the main point of Networking 101 is to find ”useful” people. In career development ”useful” people would be those who can help you with an employment.
That’s why Baruch tries to teach us this stuff from the first days: be prepared, targeted, professional, patient, focused and so on. Without learning how to do this at school it’s impossible to do it at a work place. At least, it would be extremely difficult to manage yourself in short time. All these skills are shaped during the years.
But, what June, a dedicated representative at today’s workshop, told us seemed to me quite universal. The points mentioned are valid for students as well as for people with diplomas in their hands. As for me as a students ”useful” people, I think, would be friends. Friends make ”use” for each other by relations which include appreciation, joy and inspiration. So, let’s begin building our network here in Baruch!

Monologue

College is so stressful now. It feels like that I never have enough time to finish anything. Quizzes, essays, exams, god this is crazy. Now i’m facing the biggest challenge ever, midterm projects and exams. I need to get organized and motivated. But i also enjoy college life, make friends and hang out, or go to the library for a moment of peace and quiet. I love the food around college, they are so delicious and made me forget about all the problems i have in school. Anyway, classes are not that hard, its just the pressure of exams and essays that pressured me. First class is speech, some problems i have with this class is stage fright. Im afraid of going up the stage and deliver a speech to everyone, it gets me really really nervous, i feel like everyone is staring at me and the second i speak, they will be disappointed. I never thought of myself as a public speaker. Next is Music, i know nothing about music except that they are amusing and relaxes people. The professor is too easy going, he talks a lot of things that’s not related to music. I doubt he’s really into music himself, because he will talk about politic, economy, philosophy, BUT music. Next is english, all i can say that this class is realllly long! but the materials that the professor assigned us to read are interesting. I kind of enjoy them. But because english is not my native language, so i still have problem with a lot fo vocabularies and grammar. After english is government, i took this class during high school, so i know most of the concepts, should be an easy class for me. Next is sociology, the class is not hard, but the text book is, i just have problem digesting the materials taught in the book.
After school, i spend most of my time working and doing homework. so tired of these, dont really have much time to do anything else, hope it can get better later.
I guess this is about it.

My monologue is about my high school experioence vs. college experience. I will say college’s only advantage is “freedom”, you basically can do anything you want in college. Professor won’t even bother to warn you that you failing his/her class.

In high school, is a lot easier get an A. It doesn’t matter if you didn’t come to class, as long as you get a 90+ on your final, you are fine. That’s the situation in high school, well, I will say at least in my high school. Also, is a lot easier to cheat on high school exams compared to college’s. A little bit of hand gesture and signs allows you to cheat on your exam without noticing. But don’t even consider doing this in college, is extremely dangerous. Once you get caught, you are screwed.

Monologue

Two and a half years ago, I decided to look at the pictures of me when I was just a baby. I overturned my house upside-down, trying to find any photo of me. It was just a waste of time. I could not find anything. It made me feel like a passenger: get on the “train of time” and get off a couple of decades later.

One month later I began to get used to a father’s role of one little angel. From that moment, I decided that I‘d do everything possible to capture precious moments in life of my family and my child.

Every day we try to make some photos. Of course, in the beginning we just made photos randomly. However, we got real fun doing something with these photos, like photo books or collages. Later we got the idea that some taste and knowledge of any graphic program like Photoshop would be helpful. Of course, we needed a decent still-camera. Professional camera seemed more preferable, but it was Ok to start from semi-prof. too. It also took time to create something unique from the pictures. But it really became something more valuable than just regular trivial photos.

It’s so easy just to skip many interesting and important moments of your life. Then your memories get paler and sometimes vanish completely. So, do not waste your time people. Go Create, Do Not Let Your Memories Evaporate. There will definitely be someone who will thank you.

I talked about a embarrassing moment.

I asked my friend about a song’s name which is she sang before. She try to help me to find it out and gave me a lot of titles of the songs. I searched every songs and listened them, but there was no song that I wanted. She gave up and said to me that “leave me alone” as a joke. But I didn’t know she gave up and still searched the song as the title is “leave me alone” and listened. Finally, she told me that was not a song’s name, but just said to me like that, and we laughed together. That was the one of my embarrasing moment.

They asked me to provide the bill payer’s name in my account, in order to verify my information. But I didn’t know, becaues I never create an account. It was a big trouble.

Monologue

My monologue was about my experience of renting the government textbook in Baruch book store.

I was so embarrassed when the cashier asked for my ID and I couldn’t present one.

Then I had to go to DMV on my day off in order to rent the textbook in $62 instead of buying it in $120.

From this experience, I want to say that it’s nice to have a state issued ID with you all the time.  If you don’t have one, you should consider applying one!!
