Sad, Sad Larry

My first semester experience at Baruch for the most part lived up to my expectations.  I liked majority of my professors and didn’t have trouble in any of my classes.  What did exceed my expectations was the amount of cool, down to earth, nice people I was able to meet in this LC.  First coming into Baruch I thought it was going to be a very anti-social environment and just be surrounded by a bunch of rude Asian robots (no offense ;).  But I’m happy to be proven wrong by this LC.  Being apart of this LC really made the transition from high school to college much easier and comforting.

This first semester at Baruch so far has gone well, even though the worst is to come (finals).  Everything went well so far except for one thing, registration.  Registration was by far the worst experience in Baruch so far.  I had made like 4 schedules and got closed out of all my class because I was one of the last to register.  But in the end it all worked out.  But the best thing was meeting new people that I hope to stay in touch with even if we never have a class together again, which I would think is highly unlikely cause we are all practically fighting for the same classes (all business school people).

If I could change anything this semester I would have liked to have tried harder, put more effort into classes.  Also, ANYTHING that I could do that would give me priority registration because for me registration was pure chaos.  I also would have liked to have found a club of my interest, perhaps something to do with food or rock music (not archery, that was horrible).

I don’t think I changed much since i started at Baruch.  If anything, I definitely don’t go out as often as used to.  I also learned a few lessons on time management and how procrastination really kills you.  But most important is, coming into Baruch I had no knowledge or experience on how things would work out.  I was nervous and scared about whether I had made the right decision to go here.  But now I feel much more prepared and ready to take on next semester, even though I am still unsure of my decision or what I am going to do with my life.  I know I wont end up like sad, sad Larry though…

Just to end with some humor

My Transition

From high school to college, it has been a huge change. From a small high school with a graduating class of around 200 to this abundantly populated Baruch. From little diversity to on of the most diverse colleges. Everything was new to me, the city environment, the commute, and the people. At first it was a little confusing and just a lot to take in at once that I didn’t know what to think of it. Now having experienced it for a while, I still don’t know what to think of it, all I know is it’s different. Sometimes it’s fun and exiting, but other times it’s dull. I don’t like the hours of my classes and I don’t like going home right after school and still getting home late. Sometimes I can’t help but think of how i miss High School, maybe not as much of the school part, but the people. I try and talk to my friends from High School frequently though. I also can’t help but think of what if? what if I went away? I talk to some of my friends that went away and I hear in the background people laughing, playing games, and having fun. Also, the main reason I chose Baruch was for its renowned business school and my parents were pushing me to be an accountant. Meanwhile, I have no idea what I want to do, so naturally I doubt my decision, and think if I would have been better off going to a more rounded school.

Who am I?

a) Tell us who you think YOU are!

I am my own person.  I do not let others tell me who I am.  Some of my likes include food, music, and animals.  I love all animals, I myself have 3 cats, a dog (Pomeranian), and a goldfish.  As far as music goes, I like classic rock and my favorite song at the moment is Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls.  As far as food goes, my favorite is Italian, but I love trying new and exotic things.

b) Share your top 3 concerns about your freshmen year at Baruch College and explain why.

During my freshman year at Baruch my top 3 concerns would have to be 1. eliminating bad high school senior year habits, 2. developing better study methods and doing well in all my classes, 3.  Meeting new friends, and having a good time.  I need to get rid of bad high school senior year habits, like laziness, procrastination, and not caring about grades as much.  Studying in high school is different than college, I think that high school reading the chapter, memorizing, and studying 2 days before a test will get you a good grade, but now I think college requires a higher level of thinking and understanding and I will have to develop an improved study method.  Although Baruch has been labeled commuters school, I definitely do not want to go to school and home every day and not do anything on breaks.  Making new friends, getting to know the city better and traveling together, I want to say when I go home that the day was fun.

c) So far, what do you think will make your Baruch College experience different from your high school experience?

The major differences transitioning from high school to Baruch for me was the independence, and the size.  Going to high school always being pressured by parents, having to do everything, and then the parent teacher conferences were the worst, I am thankful there will be no more of those.  I also went to a relatively small high school, where everybody knew everybody, and Baruch is huge.  It is going to take some time getting used to.

d) How do you think your first year at College will change you?

Hopefully within my first year I will develop more as a person intellectually.  Although I entered Baruch with an idea of an accounting major, I am really not sure what I am going to do yet.  I’m just waiting for the right calling, and hopefully Baruch will be able to show it to me withing my first year.  I also think Baruch will turn me into a city person.  I never took public transportation really at all before Baruch, so I am still new to this whole public transportation world.  I intend to learn a lot more about the city and become train savvy.
