Bitter Sea Discussion

I was looking at the other blogs about the academic workshop and I agree with Nicole that it is cool that Baruch was able to get Charles Li, the author of the Bitter Sea, to come and talk to the entire freshmen class. I had mixed feelings about the workshop, I felt that when Charles Li spoke it was very interesting, however when some of the other individuals spoke I found it a little boring. As I said I did enjoy listening to Li and hearing what he his life was like and what he had to overcome. I would suggest for future academic workshops, that maybe a dramatization of the novel that was read for the freshmen class or a one on one discussion with the author of the book. Overall, I did enjoy some parts of the workshop and did walk away with a new appreciation of what I have.

Career Workshop

The career workshop that our learning community went to, I felt was very helpful and I found a lot of information. I was not aware of all the services the STARR program offered. I can honestly say I will take advantage of everything STARR has to offer. After going to the career enrichment workshop I did make a profile on STARR and hopefully, I can find an internship for this upcoming summer that will focus on my desired career of journalism. Having the capability to upload your resume and companies viewing them is amazing and looking for internships are the numerous ways Baruch will help you become successful after attending this college.

Academic Enrichment

This event was a different taste from the other academic workshops we had. The author of the book that we were assigned to read over the summer actually showed up amongst a few thousand of his readers. I thought, out of the 4 panelists, he was the most interesting. The one thing that I remembered him saying over and over again was how he wanted to be among his audience as opposed to facing them on the elevated stage. This shows the type of personality he has as well as how he values his relationship with his readers. He was a very interesting guy and looked like a old mentor that somebody would take on. Because of the things that he’s been through in his life, he comes across as wise. The one thing that I noticed when he spoke was that he was very intelligent. He spoke in a humble manner that addressed the audience with respect and well as demanding it from the audience. I learned a lot just by watching him speak and this workshop/event was a very productive one.

Career Exploration

This workshop proved to be important to me. Although I’ve done some resume work and revisions for school organizations, it was important to me because is reminded me of what I was responsible for in a resume. One aspect that I found to be especially helpful in this workshop was the mention of personal pitches. I didn’t know how important this part of job searching was because it was always less stressed than resumes. This workshop basically reinforced what I already knew about resume building and added a few new ideas for me. Overall, it was extremely helpful and the STARR Career Development Center sounds like an important place that I should learn how to use.

Academic Enrichment

I thought it was interesting for the author of the book to come to Baruch to speak with us. During the whole time, he spoke with enthusiasm but I sat all the way up on the balcony so I couldn’t really hear him. I think he discussed about some aspects of his book, like how he came to be the person he is today. He was a very independent young man, and faced many hardships growing up. It just made him stronger as a whole and I think he is trying to get the message across that no matter where or who we are, if we try to accomplish something, we will suceed.

Career Exploration

This workshop helped alot because I haven’t written a resume before. When I applied for my old job, I experienced a few interviews but this workshop gave us tips on how to act. Through this program, I also got to know a little more about internships. I didn’t know what it was before hand and how it was important to apply for one. The STARR center information was also useful because now I know where to go for help in career developement if I need to.

Bitter Sea

I thought the panel discussion was interesting and it was nice that we had the author of the Bitter Sea come to our school.  Having said that I think that the author Charles really likes to talk a lot and he sort of rambled on.  He seems to have written an entire book about himself and it seems like he enjoys talking about himself.  The book itself was somewhat interesting though.  I can see why it would be given to Freshmen because it is about a young man who needs to face many new environments.

Career Exploration and Academic Enrichment

I thought that it was a good idea for the school to advertise it’s career center.  It was very helpful to know that there are plenty of internships out there that Baruch will help students obtain.  It is also good to know that the school will help you with writing a resume, which may be a concern of many students.  I think it would be a great idea for students to take advantage of all these services that Baruch offers.

Career Discovery

I felt that the career discovery program was very helpful. I found out a lot about where to go for internships and employment opportunities. The staff also should offer help toward carrer paths. The most useful piece of help they offer for me at this current time is how to write a resume. The STARR center is a vital asset and i feel that this workshop was very beneficial to me as a student.

Bitter Sea Discussion panel

I feel that the book was an important eye opener. It showed how a boy goes through a new envoirnemnt, totally foreign from his own. This compared to our situation because as new students at Baruch College we were placed in a new enviornment where we didnt know what to expect. Through this lesson, we should always remember not to judge people based on where there from because we are all different people – with different combinations of traits that makes us unique.

In terms of the conference, I got most of the key points. I understood that we all at one point or another ask who we are? or why are we here ? it is important to always be aware of where you stand and if you loose track, to find yourself.  No matter where were from, we always have obstacles to overcome.
