Class Registration
I came to college knowing that we needed to pick our own classes during the semester and that it would be annoying and hectic. I didn’t know that some of the classes would already be taken by upperclassmen. That was a bummer. But I learned how to register for spring classes and where to go to register. In addition I also learned how to prepare for registration: What to do, where to go to find my classes, how to set up my list for my classes. That workshop really helped me on how to register for classes for the spring semester.
STARR 8-)
Going into the workshop I was confident on what was going to be in the workshop. I was pretty sure what was going to be discussed and I was right!! I had been through that kind of workshop before at my recreation center. The workshop I attended helped me land a job later with the recreation center. But yeah I was right and knew what was coming next. It was a good workshop for people who didn’t know about resumes and interviews. Even though the workshop was a repeat for me it did refresh my mind on interviews and resumes. Everything in the workshop was on point from what i have learned and I even learned a few new things. Overall it was a good experience and i learned a lot.
Academic Enrichment Workshop Experience
Going into the Mason Hall to see Charles Li I thought it was going to be really boring. Well, it was. Charles Li seemed to be an interesting guy but I really did not want to be there that day. I was really bored the whole day and just wanted to get out of school and relax. So that gave me a bad mindset already. For the most part I couldn’t even hear what was going on because so many people were talking and I was sitting near the exit. I did hear some of the answers Charles Li gave to the students’ questions. He went on about his life and laughed at his own comment. One thing that he said that opened my eyes was that he enjoyed his life of poverty with his friends back then more than his life now. He said he cherished that life and it was home to the best experiences of his life. I can see what he meant by that since you don’t know what you have until you lose it. The same concept applied to Charles Li and he wouldn’t have been there if it weren’t for those experiences. I respect him for that. The workshop was an overall enlightening experience for me and i enjoyed seeing Charles Li.
MONO-logue
Basketball, football, baseball, breaking, and just chilling. These are the things I like to do. I enjoy playing sports and the competitiveness of it. Basketball is a high paced sport that acquires skill in shooting, dribbling, passing, and communication. The team must know each other very well and communicate with each other in a common language, which is usually body language on the court. When I play basketball, almost everyone underestimates me. I’m usually the last pick for a game when I play with strangers. However, when I get the ball, my favorite move is to drive in for an easy lay-up. I start close to the elbow, a place on the court right outside the “paint”, and jab to the right n drive to the left. Many people I have played with for the first time would be caught off guard and would think to themselves, what just happened? After they know I can drive to the basket, my defenders start to play some defense. Then things get fun. Because I have a variety of moves I can use, they get surprised every time. It’s fun watching people look at me and say things like, “how the hell?” Throughout the game other players start to pass me the ball more often I end up winning not only the game but respect. Basketball is not only fun n a good workout but it helps me release all the stress I have. It’s a physical sport. I use every advantage I can think of against my opponents. Since I’m a kind of a big guy, I use my body. I like to play the post. There I can bump off anyone who defends me without starting a fight since its part of the game. That helps relieve much stress. The other sports like football and baseball also relive stress and I enjoy them as well. I haven’t been breaking for a long time. I am just a beginner but I know my material, especially because one of my closest friends’ a Bboy who is pretty good I must say. I usually chill with him and he tells me about breaking. The art of breaking is very fun and exciting to watch. It’s crazy how these bboys can move their bodies in such a way which seems impossible. That interested me into breaking and now I go to Hunter almost every day after school and practice there with other bboys like my friend. Breaking is so much fun at Hunter because we all are just fooling around while learning and practicing. That aspect makes you want to look forward breaking. Also, it releases the tensions some breakers might have when trying to attempt a move which they are close to but can’t manage to nail the final step. Breaking does become frustrating but you should always have fun to release the stress. Inevitably, that will help you perfect the move. Besides focusing on school and the workload I like to participate in these activities. It balances out school and play.
Ohhh Baddd
Who am I? Well I my name is Obaid Abbasi. I like my name because its pronounced Oh-bad. No one i know has the same name. Well, there’s this kid from Bayside High School who has the same name but its pronounced how its written. I like to play sports, mainly basketball. I enjoy basketball because i trash talk a lot, especially to my friends who are taller than me or better than me. Its where i can fool around without anyone looking down on me because im actually good for my height. and when they underestimate me i shut them up and that’s a good feeling. Besides basketball, right now im learning to bboy, or break-dance. One of my really close friends is a bboy and its crazy how people move their bodies in that motion. I go to Hunter College to practice there with my friend and other bboys. Other than that, im mainly a laid back person who just wants to experience life and have fun. Im shy when meeting new people, which is one of the characteristics i want to throw away, but when people get to know me i can be lots of fun and you will probably have to tell me to be quiet once you get to know me. I love comedy and cant get enough of it. i also love listening to music. it escapes me from home and the worries of the world. i listen to mostly rap, hip-hop, breakin beats, and r&b. however i do listen to some alternative.
3 concerns that i have about freshman year at Baruch is all the work we have to do. I don’t think i will actually finish all the work in time and will cram the last week before exams or papers. Procrastination is something i cant seem to get away from. its like my shadow, always there. I haven’t really been doing all the readings because i got lazy and fell asleep on others. also, i cant work when im at home. there are too many distractions like getting up to get a drink of water or something to eat. and that leads to bathroom visits which take up time. My mom is always asking for help since i work good with my hands like an engineer. in addition, my little sister is always bothering me and she talks WAY too much. Shes too smart for a 4 year old and i cant easily trick. but shes really cute so it offsets. Another concern i have is reading all the syllabus’ for what i have to do. i am not good at remembering things, which is why my blog is so late. i need get a calender or something to remind myself of what is due when. my third concern is time management. i need to better manage my time so i can have time to just relax. i would really want Sundays free because of football. GO GIANTS!! But sadly i haven’t had Sundays free recently. i would also like to get a job and hopefully that would force me too do a lot of work during the weekdays and work Saturday and Sunday off. that would be my ideal schedule for college.
High School was joke to me. Especially senior year. I would be late to class almost everyday and take little to no notes and still get a decent average of around 85. i was always the smart lazy kid in the class. when it came to math i would do literally NO homework and get 90s on the test and ultimately a 90+ in the class. That cant be the case in college. i actually have to do homework, which i was just doing for math online. i have to be organized, prepared and motivated to work hard.
hopefully, my goal for my first year in college is to make me accustomed to doing work, staying on track, NOT procrastinating, and be exposed to the real world and how it works. also, i want to be actively involved at Baruch. i want to be active in a club or organization. by the years end, i want to be motivated to do work and not let little things distract me. That is what i envision myself to be. Hopefully it works out. =D
