Jimmy’s first semester @ Baruch College

My first semester here at Baruch College was… hmmm… how can i put this?  It was different. It was a challenge. It was intimidating… yet it was fun…

I really don’t know how to put how i feel about my first semester in words. It has been an experience that i have yet to fully understand. Even though I am going through this phase here at Baruch College, I don’t know how I actually feel about all of this. Its kind of like arguing between whether curry chicken is right or chicken curry is right.. I really don’t have a side to pick.

What I CAN tell you is that I really enjoyed meeting everyone in this learning community and it was a great experience making friends with all of them… At first I hated the fact that we were put into these blocks where we had all the same classes with one another… but as time passed, i felt that these blocks actually provided a basis… a kind of start that helped us network within the Baruch community quicker and more efficiently.

There has been many ups and downs in my first semester and juggling between school, work and the little bit of spare time I am given for my own use, I would have to say my first semester here at Baruch College is a success. Not because I necessarily because i have achieved much, but because I finally got comfortable with where I am. It took my two years to get used to my JHS, and one year to get used to high school.

Thank you everyone for making my first semester what it is!

And I’m done with my last blog YAY.

Career Exploration Workshop

On October 29th, 2010, we hada visitor fro the STARR Career Development Center come and speak with us during our freshman seminar class. I do not recall her name, but she seemed like she knew her stuff and was very funny. During the visit, one of the topics she explained was resume writing, and any questions we may have had about it.

What i found really helpful was that she explained to us step by step in detail about what we needed to know. She also answered all the questions i had before i even asked them. Another great thing was that she gave us handouts where we would be able to see examples and use it as a layout for our resumes.

When we were done with resume writing techniques, she moved on to interviewing skills. She explained to us the type of questions you sould expect and how to answer them.

It was an extremely helpful workshop.

Academic Enrichment Workshop

Yesterday, all the freshman were required to attend a workshop called ‘East — West Identity: Journeys & Transformations’. We had the honor to meet the author of our freshman text Charles Li Ni. In addition to meeting Charles, we were also given the opportunity to meet other panelists and listen to their stories. It was such great experience and a lot of fun with other members in our LC during the workshop.

After all the panelists were finished telling us about their stories, we were given an opportunity to ask Charles any questions we may have had for him about the book, his life or anything in between. Overall I really appreciated this once in a lifetime opportunity we were given.

Jimmy Monologue

“It isn’t where you come from, its where you are going that counts.” Why is this building called the vertical campus? Isn’t the 23rd street building vertical as well? Aren’t all buildings built vertically? Thats weird. College is weird. The people in college are even weirder. Now that i think of it, high school was weird. You know what else is weird? Me.

Mishkin Art gallery

So I was never a big fan of all this art stuff. Since I was a child I have never enjoyed any museum trip or anything of that sort. Like I really do not find much appealing about statues, architecture or even any pottery and whatnot. But photography is always one thing that appeals to me. I have taken photography classes in high school and on my spare time outside of school to pursue interests and photography is one of the worlds most beautiful discovery.

The Mishkin Art Gallery consisted of a collection of photos that really made me feel like wow. I do believe at that time, the theme was groups in society and groups where we belong to. In the gallery the photos depicted many different groups; from friends, fans, family and even death. As we were being toured throughout the gallery, after looking at multiple pictures, many of my emotions were triggered.

Although I still found the trip there boring like i would find any other museum or gallery boring, this one was different. Maybe it was because photography has always been an interest that i had; or perhaps maybe the different emotions that were triggered made it different.

Overall, my trip to the Mishkin Art Gallery was a success; not only to the eye but it was also in some ways appealing to my emotions.
