Academic Advisement

I think this was a very useful workshop and it helped me pick out my classes for the spring semester. It was probably the most useful workshop out of all of them especially for freshman. The woman was really nice and made everything extra clear. I found out all the class I need to take and which one I should take a little later on. Everything was straight to the point. I think it’s really good that there is such a workshop for freshman.

Academic Enrichment

I liked what the people in the panel had to say about identity although a lot of it I already felt like I knew. It was interesting to see the different backgrounds and countries they came from and how that affected who they were. All of their situations showed the struggles they went through to try and figure out their identity. One of the women in the panel spoke about how she had to move several times as a child and then did not really have a place to call home. At first, I thought moving a lot would be fun because you get to explore different countries and cultures but after her speech, I saw how that can really affect someone’s identity. Overall, I thought this workshop was beneficial to freshman because that is why a lot of people go to college, to find out who they are and what they will do.

My Monologue

College is going well but I wish my grades were a little higher. I’m trying a little harder now to get good grades and that seems to be helping. I love having Fridays off because two day weekends go by too fast. Theater class is interesting and we get to see plays. Things I like consist of dancing ballroom and hip hop, learning the Spanish language, music, reading Polish magazines, shopping, traveling although I haven’t traveled to many places, and spending time with friends and family. I like being outside a lot because it can get loud at times with two younger siblings in the house. Also, I liked working as an administrative assistant in an envelope manufacturing company. I got to experience how it feels to work a 40-hour week, tiring but I really enjoyed the experience. The bosses and other workers were really nice and I practiced some of my Spanish with them. When I talked to some of them, we talked in Spanish. I love the language and perhaps hope to be fluent in it.

Career Exploration

I learned about the two types of resumes: the chronological one and the functional one. Previously, I did not really know about the functional one. I have always written my resumes using the chronological format. Also, I learned what to wear so that someone applying for a job does not overdue it by wearing too much jewelry or perfume but also looked prepared with their business attire. They had good interview tips as well. I learned to send a thank-you letter twenty four hours after the interview or mail the letter if I need more time. They told us we have to “sell ourselves” to the company and tell them why we would add to their company. I think the “Personal Pitch” is a great way of practicing this. You should take 30 seconds to 2 minutes to speak about yourself and your talents. I thought this exercise would be useful to do before interviews.

1) I think I’m a really nice, caring person and I like helping out people. I care a lot about family, friends, and my grades too. I love being outside with friends and family whenever I have time.  I’d like to say I’m a dancer but currently that’s not true. I’d love to start again so I’ll probably join the club here at Baruch.

2) My top 3 concerns at Baruch are time management, keeping my grades up, and taking advantage of my time here. Time management is my top concern because it’s something I’ve always had a problem with. I like to be outside a lot and text and then I lose track of time sometimes. Keeping my grades up is a concern because I want to go really good in college especially in my first year because it’s only going to get harder and I know if I get bad grades in my first year, it’ll be harder to get them up later. Taking advantage of my time here is a concern because there are so many opportunities at Baruch and I don’t want them to pass me by.

3) What will make being at Baruch different from being in high school is no one is worrying about you like they did in high school. There’s a lot more people and you have to do more things on your own. Just being in college is making me more independent and I’m starting to feel more grown up because of this.

4) I think my first year at Baruch College will change me in the way that I’ll be more independent, organized, and learn how to manage my time better. Already, I’m starting my essays almost a week before the due date and I don’t think I’ve ever done that in high school.
