update on starr career development

i visited the starr center. i was told that i should go to one of their work shops if i wanted more information. the only issue with this is that i am not free during either workshop. The fine women at the desk refused to give me further information. After checking it out online, however, i figured out that they do something like help you put together a resume and help you sell who you are to potential employers, and they have access to job offers, etc.

Academic Advisement

The academic advisement was very helpful by that the staff recommended us about what kind of courses we should take and the priorities for the class. The academic advisement also helped by that they listed the requirements we need for tier I, II, III courses and the requirements for the schools. I find it particluar helpful about the fact that BUS1000 is a pre requisite for CIS 2200 along with SimNet exam because I didn’t know about it before this workshop.
The workshop also helped by that that we are informed about the help we can receive from the advisement center if we needed.

Workshop Blog: Academic Advisement

The Academic Advisement workshop was very helpful in making me understand what classes I NEEDED to take and helped me know what courses or tests were required for certain classes that I intended to take. It was a perfect timing as well because it was the day before everyone started registering and it helped everyone in the workshop. I got to ask many questions and all were answered. I also visited the website used in the presentation, that same night to get more details on other courses as well. This was a very helpful workshop that helped me become more advised on the requirements for graduation and on the requirements for Zicklen School of Business. I also now will visit the advisement center more often to figure out the best ways to schedule my courses to better myself by graduating earlier and with better grades.

(1) At the seminar, there were five people sitting on the stage. Most of the people were talking about identity. Because many of them did not feel they fit in the community they were brought into, they felt that they did not know who they were. And they talked about how throughout life and through their life experiences, they were able to find themselves. The seminar was a little boring but some of the points they made about losing themselves and their idinty was interesting.
(2) Their tips on how to present oneself well during an interview was very useful. Especially when they told us that we should always write an email back to our interviewer saying thank you. I thought overall the whole seminar was informative and I will definately be taking use of their office from now on.

Career Exploration

This workshop talked about the basics of getting a job. They covered the questions :How a resume is suppose to be? What to do before, during and after an interview? What type of help Baruch College offers? and so on. A very educational session.

Academic Enrichment

The panel was conducted by five speakers including Charles N. Li. When I first looked at him, he didn’t look like a man in his 70s. He looked pretty young for someone in his 70s. The session was about identity and how everyone has one or more identities. Some parts were interesting. Some not so much. But it was great to finally see Charles N. Li in the flesh.

Monologue

Who am I? I’m just a regular guy who enjoys life. Speaking of life, life is strange; it has ups and downs. You never know what you’re going to face, so might as well be ready for anything that life leads you. Speaking of leading, I want to be a leader. I want to be a billionaire so I can do whatever I want to do and lead my subordinates; I want to be the president so I can write history; I want to be a great speechgiver so I can galvanize people and make them follow me. Speaking of following, I follow ESPN. For people who don’t know what it means, ESPN is a sport entertainment network. It provides news and analysis of sports world, so for people like me who enjoy sports, ESPN is a haven. Speaking of haven, I just order my hard drive from an online store located in New Haven, CT. My hard drive stopped working about a week ago, so I need to replace it with a fresh, new drive. This will cost me about 30 bucks plus shipping, so I am not happy with that, but what else can I do? I am just happy that I backed up the data, because if I didn’t, I would’ve lost all precious data, and I would’ve been really devastated. Speaking of devastation, I’m really devastated that I will no longer be able to see Christina in my high school. She was probably the hottest girl I’ve ever seen in my life, and I really wanted to get her. However, the problem was, when I was a senior, she was a sophomore, so I didn’t have chance to take same classes with her. I did everything I could to try to get close to her, but at the end, it just didn’t work. After my graduation, I was really devastated, because I knew it meant that I would not see her again. I think I’m getting over her, though. Right now, I just need to focus on what I have to focus on, and that’s studying hard, doing all the works, participate, and get good grades. Speaking of good grades, I just got a good grade from my english paper. I first got a B- on it, but I took time to revise it, and at the end, mine jumped up to A! How sweet is that? I hope I can continue to do what I’m doing right now. So, yeah. I’m just a regular guy who enjoys life.

Academic Enrichment

It was a great time hearing from people like Charles Ni and the crew. They all had very interesting experiences in their lives, and I really believe that we as Americans can reflect to that, since we live in a multicultural society. To be honest, I had not expect that many students show up at the same time; I had thought only our LC people who go and meet them, but at the end, it didn’t really make a difference. Meeting Charles Ni, the author of the book that all of us read (hopefully), was just extraordinary. I mean, I could actually him face to face! How amazing is that? This academic enrichment workshop experience was something that I will remember and cherish for a long time.

SCDC

SCDC was a great experience.  During the time, I learned many kinds of information that I will eventually have to take into account when I apply for a job. The thing that interested me the most was how to write a resume; I didn’t know that I had to follow specific rules and use specific type of paper. Also, I really liked the fact the peer mentors showed what kind of outfits and manners the interviewers expect from the applicants, which I didn’t know. Overall, SCDC was a refreshing reminder for me, and I will definitely use the information I learned for future.

SCDC

The presentation regarding resumes and interviews was very helpful. They went through what you should have in a resume, or what you should do in an interview step by step. I don’t remember what they, which was fortunate that they gave us handouts basically reinforcing what they were saying. So I can look at what they gave us if I ever need any help. And also I learned what SCDC can help me with and I can go to them if I ever need any job related help and more.
