FRESHMEN SEMINAR
by rufang.zheng1
HI sorry for not posting anything lately. I have really enjoyed my time here with the people in the class. Thank you Michelli Li for taking care of us. This semester was going very well except for the time I drop a class. I didn’t expect to drop any class in the first semester. I believe I have change a little bit. I am not as nervous as I was before when I was first been here.

awesome trip to the Rubin Museum of Art =D
by Jin
A special day on November 11th, 2010. I made a visit to the Rubin Museum of Art, accompanied by Sean, Emillio, Oleksandr, and Marsida. The Rubin Museum of Art enlightened me with Buddhist cultures and exposed to the various traditional Hindu artwork. As a Christian, I tried to view another religious culture in an unbiased way, and I was educated by their differences.
The most memorable arts to me are the common symbols and important figures of the art of Himalayas. The figures of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the couple deities all have hand gestures that represent meanings. For instance, the hands form the shape of a wheel symbolize a reference to teaching the Buddha’s doctrine. With wrist pulling back and palm facing outward, means do not fear. What I suspect is challenging for me to do is their dancing, since the dancing needs me to stand and balance with one foot, and need to bring the ankle of the other foot near the crouch area and move the upper body in rhythm!!!
Overall, the trip to the Rubin Museum of Art was not very exciting. But it gave me a similar feeling as my Political science class in terms of its informativeness, its occasional interests that brings me, and to a lesser degree, its dullness. =D
ty for reading, and sry for posting so late.

Rubin Musuem
by weifeng.li
i went to the rubin musuem and i saw alot of interesting artifacts like buddha, and stuff from other various religions. i mostly saw alot of stuff from japanese and from china in the first floor. it made me think that even though japan and china may seem similar, it is actually very different from each other, noted by the religion from each. it made me think that we are all different even though we are in the same world, and that no matter how close we are to each other, we have the slightest differences that makes us and our religion unique from each other.

I don’t know if the others had this feeling but when i came to know about the compulsory museum visit, i was like ” WHAT? Museum? Again? Are you kidding me?”. From all different museums I had visted, none of them actually left me a good impression because i would always get lost in the museum or end up leaving my camera in the restroom. Is it my problem or maybe all the accidents happened were destined? However, since it is a compulsory trip, I had no other choices but went to the Rubin Museum reluctantly. So, Wei Fang as the group leader , leaded Ru Fang , Yong Chen, Tony , Will and me to walk the longest 20 minutes in my life. The location of the museum was confusing and we ended up entering the museum from the cafe entrance and thought that we had mistakenly entered into a restaurant before the guard guided us to the main entrance.
To my surprise, Rubin Museum is absolutely different from the museum I have visited before. In fact, it is the only western museum which depicts workpieces and diorama of Asian cultures. The ambiance of the museum is somber with all the Buddhas, yet very artistic and precious with the yellow flight focusing on their golden surface. As a son of my Buddhist parents, I am not surprised by those sophisticated statues, since I have seen a lot of them. However, when I stumbled onto an area showing the process to craft those irreplaceable precious Buddha, I was amazed deeply by the great craftsmanship and patient of a craftsman.Without them, I think wonderful sculptures that I have met would not exist, and hence, cultures would be hardly preserved. After that, I discovered a large map which indicates the sources of Buddhism. I usually don’t really care about the content on the board but the big map also showed where Malaysia is. Since most of my friends, did not know about where my country is, i took the chance to show them and tell them some stories of my country. Through my speech, i realized that my own identity was actually hidden in my history. I identified myself while showing where Malaysia is and how i lived my life over there to my friends. Had a great time telling them my stories and my life but not from learning the stories of the artworks.
By the way, i forgot where i put or i might have lost my memory card of my camera again as well as the pictures in itFortunately, I have one picture of one artwork of the museum in my phone. But it turns out that i can’t upload the picture since the storage memory is full. I will try my best to find my memory cards and share the pictures in it.

My friends and I went to Rubin Museum last week. We really enjoyed it. There are many amazing arts in the museum. The Buddha is the most interesting art in it. I think some of them represent Chinese cultures. We took many wonderful pictures, but I can’t post them. WHY…WHY…WHY??????? Oh…………..Nooooooooo!

Hi, everyone. I went to the Rubin Museum of Art with some friends last week. It is so quiet and great place. I ‘m very interesting to visit the museum. I enjoy many valuable exhibitions, and understand many about religious cultures, history. It’s a quite meaningful experience. From the museum, I took some photos about buddha, because my family practice Buddhism. My picture show a Buddhas that is art of our east buddhism is specific show. They can embody the characteristic, significance of the ethics of Chinese Buddhism.

The trip of Rubin museum
by weiyao.sun
Yesterday, Michelle and I went to the Rubin museum. I’m not good at the art, this is my second time of newyork museum. Before I went there I just treat this trip as a mission of my FRO class. I had never think I will like the museum so much. At first we found a wrong place , and the real museum has a big contrast in my heart. There is really attracted me.
Rubin museum has many collections of the Tibetan Buddhist and the Himalayan art.In addition to programs dedicated to the exploration of the fundamentals of Himalayan arts and cultures, the Rubin Museum’s programming serves as a catalyst for cross-cultural exploration. Therefor there has many bronze art casting of Buddhism. I’m enjoy in these art and history, and feels like got into another world. There has a big map of the Buddhism source place. I found my hometown on that map and felt so happy. Tibet is one of the Buddhist source place ,so Buddhism has a big influnce on Chinese culture. We can easily find any temples in China. When I saw these art casting I have a second felt I was back China. India is another buddhist country, the Buddhist art there is a little different from Tibet.I had saw many kind of buddha I never saw in China. I am really enjoy this tirp , when we went out the musim I had told Michelle I felt like went an other country before.
I don’t know why I can’t add some picture in my post here is the link of my museum pictures. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=35197&id=100000639180959

My experience at the Rubin Museum of Arts
by marsida.guzia

My visit at the Rubin museum of Arts was very interesting. What made this experience very special were the exhibitions that stated lots of information about the Himalayan culture and various artists. Atta Kim was one of the artists that actually impressed me most. His “Monologue of Ice Series” displayed the ‘changeness’ in the water structure which relates to life cycle changing through time. Water is very essential for life Constant transformation of water from liquid to solid ice and rain steam, is fundamentally a regulatory factor in weather and affected by atmospheric changes in the nature. The same thing can be said for the life which is affected by the surroundings. Also water is the main factor underlying regulators for the environment and is an internal controller of life. Probably Atta Kim through her collection tended to represent something different but this picture inspired me to think how essential water is our life and in an analogical way how it relates to life stages.
