2 brands/logos

Two brands/logos that are important to me are the New York Jets and Apple Computers.

The New York Jets are my favorite football team and my favorite team in any sport. When ever the Jets play I’m either watching the game on t.v or listening to it on the radio. When they’re not playing games I’m always watching espn and sny on t.v checking on updates and comments about the team. When the Jets lose I’m usually in a terrible mood that week. I always try to go to at least one game a season and this year I’m going to the game on Thanksgiving and I’m really excited. I think that the Jets are very likely to win the superbowl this year.

Another brand that is very important to me is Apple. I own an Ipod and a MacBook Pro. I listen to my Ipod every day on the way to school and on the way home. I have an hour commute in the morning so I don’t know what I would do without it. When I’m home I’m usually always on my MacBook. Im either doing homework, on facebook, reading up on the Jets, downloading music and many other things. It is very reliable and I love using it. It is much better than any windows computer.

Starbucks & Strand

Starbucks is an important logo for me for several reasons. I love, love, love coffee and Starbucks happens to be my favorite place to get it. It’s also one of the only coffee places that carries soy milk, which is necessary for me because I am a vegan, meaning I don’t consume dairy products. Furthermore, I appreciate the fact that Starbucks has transformed it’s corporate chain from mere coffee shops to those that advertise and embrace a particular lifestyle which consists of peaceful and intellectual individual that appreciate all forms of art including the pleasing and calming music that is always playing in the background. I can literally spend hours there.

Along with Starbucks, the Strand Bookstore logo is extremely important to me because it is my favorite vintage bookstore in New York City. Located near Union Square, it is not only placed in one of my favorite areas in the city, it satisfies my love of reading by carrying all of my favorite books. Along with selling new books, I also love the fact that Strand sells used and vintage books that are not usually for sale anywhere else.

Temporary Residence Ltd. & Merge Records

Naturally, two “brands” that mean the most to me are Temporary Residence Ltd. and Merge Records.

Both of these labels have played HUGE roles in my life on an extremely personal level. To start, when I was about 13, I discovered Temporary Residence Ltd. I found solace in the band Explosions In The Sky and I noticed a tiny symbol on the backside of the CD case. I thought it was interesting but never really payed it any attention. Over the next few years I discovered bands like Eluvium and Mono, and once again that little heart logo with “Temporary Residence Ltd.” underneath. It was then that I decided to finally look them up online. From then, I have always trusted that any TRL band I purchase will be a safe choice. Not only safe, but life changing.

Fast forward to the present. I decide I’m moving to New York, and I look at the location of Temporary Residence… Brooklyn, NY. I shoot owner/creator Jeremy Devine an email letting him know how much I adore his records and asking him if there was any way I could be a part of it. He emails back within an hour or so thanking me for the kind words and offering to meet up with me when I come visit. I finally visited him and an internship was born. I began school and work (which I can attribute to one of the three TRL employees, Alfie who used to work at the Apple store and got me my job) and didn’t really have as much time to intern, so the tables turned and now Jeremy is helping me begin my own label.

This is where Merge steps in. I have always been a fan of bands like Arcade Fire, and Neutral Milk Hotel, but I never realized their label (similar to TRL). My girlfriend bought me a book one day entitled “Our Noise: The Story Of Merge Records” and as soon as I opened the cover… I was hooked. That book walked me through every single detail about how Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance created one of the most successful independent labels out of thin air. At this point, owning a record label was my biggest dream but I had no idea where to start, until I actually read this book. I found a newfound love for NMH and other bands I wish I would have found sooner such as Lambchop, Butterglory, Sebadoh, and Portastatic. Perhaps the largest thing Merge has done for me however, is that book. I basically view it as my bible now and refer all of my questions of what to do next straight to the bookshelf.

These labels have done more for me than anything I can even begin to think of, whether it be mentoring me, or sparking my dream. Either way, each of them are my favorites (hands down) and put out the best music you could possibly hear. I STRONGLY suggest any band from each, and I really hope you guys check them out.

Apple And Rise

Two important brands to me are Apple Inc., and Rise Records. Apple is an obvious one, as I’ve been using their products for years. I first used a Mac when I was 8, and I’ve been using one as my main computer for years now. I’ve also owned a number of other Apple products, such as the iPod Touch, which was eventually replaced with an iPhone. Even to this day, I still get a little excited when I go into an Apple store. Apple makes good products, and they’re an integral part of my life at this point, I can’t leave home without either my iPhone, laptop, or both.

Rise Records is a more recent favorite of mine. It’s a record label that signs both big bands and unknown bands alike, giving them the resources they need to reach their fans. I like the brand because over the years they’ve only signed quality artists, and I know that when I see that little “R” logo, I’m in for some good listening. A good chunk of my playlist has artists from this label.

Alright, done. Yay.

Blog Post No. 2 — NFL & Acura

The first logo/brand I will talk about is the NFL. Most of us know it stands for “National Football League” and this is pretty relevant in my life. First off I love sports and football is probably my favorite. It definitely ranks right up there in my favorite professional sport to watch on television. However, one of the more prominent reasons I like the NFL is because it brings me closer to my family and friends. I always have friendly and sometimes even heated conversations/arguments with them. My favorite team is the New York Giants (they lost today to the cowgirls’, don’t worry it was a fluke) and I share that with most of my family. I have several friends and relatives who like the Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets (a star logo? green and white color combination? yuck!). Anyways, it’s always fun to talk to family and friends about football and the banter only brings us closer together.

The next brand/logo I will talk about is Acura. This brand of vehicles is important and special to me because it’s the first vehicle I ever drove and it’s the brand of car that I drive around currently. It’s a 95′ Acura Legend and in my honest opinion it backs it’s name. For a car from the 90’s, it’s pretty quick and agile. This car is also special because I’m a person who likes to hang out a lot with friends and family so I use it a lot. I use this car for basically everything so all-in-all it’s very special to me.

Metropolitan Museum, Mango

The Metropolitan Museum of Art its obviously not a brand, although they do have certain products on their name in the Museum Store. However, this is a logo in which I recognize myself. As a dancer I’m a lover of art and art history, and the Met is one of the biggest Museums in the world and with the greatest collection. I enjoy visiting the museum every time I can! Also, I really like the design of the logo and how they change the colors every day. I chose the Met and not the MoMa because I’m a huge fan of classical art, but still love the MoMa and their design objects.

The other logo I chose is actually a brand, Mango, a spanish clothing store similar to Zara or H&M, only that Mango does not produce in such large quantities as the other two. I love the elegance on their pieces, even if they are everyday blouses or more formal clothing, plus, they are of the best quality. I myself love design, and I believe Mango is a great brand that is in between normal/popular stores and the top designers. Very stylish.

G-unit and Sony

hey whats up, my two favorite brands are g-unit and sony.

I like G-unit because they are the first rap group that i started listening to back in 8th grade and 5 years later im still listening to them. They always manage to keep themselves relevant in the music industry. The new Lloyd Banks album The Hunger For More 2 is coming out soon so I’ve been playing their music alot lately.

Sony is my favorite product brand because of the quality of their goods. I own a sony tv, headphones, and playstation and they all show the great quality of Sony’s products.

Uniqlo + NBA

Two brands that mean a lot to me would be UNIQLO and the NBA.

Uniqlo

Of all the stores I shop in, Uniqlo is my favorite. I have bought many of my clothes from this Japan-based retailer, which is located in SoHo (the only Uniqlo store in the entire US). I remember when the store first opened during my junior year in high school, it was around Christmas time. I was fascinated by the sheer size and variety of nice clothes the store had. For the last 4-5 years, I have continued shopping at Uniqlo because of its quality and affordable prices. I think I’m also attracted to Uniqlo because Japan is at the top of my list of places I want to visit. Being able to add pieces of their style to my own is fun.

NBA

Basketball has always been my favorite sport so it’s no surprise that the NBA is something I follow very closely. I’m fans of many players (Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, to name a few) and I am a fan of the NETS. As long as I can remember, I’ve been watching NBA games. I remember the good times (Knicks of the 90’s when they were actually making the playoffs) as well as the bad times (Michael Jordan coming back to the Wizards). There’s no other sport like basketball. It’s sad that I haven’t been able to play as much anymore, especially this semester due to my immense workload, club obligations, and other reasons but I continue to watch the NBA to satisfy my entertainment needs.

NEW MEADOWLANDS STADIUM

I’ve never stepped foot inside a football stadium before so it was a great experience, especially since the stadium just opened up a few weeks ago.

the last first blog

Better late than never, right? I’m Brian McMahon, I was born and raised in Washington Heights and now dorm in the Lower East Side on 101 Ludlow. I attended Mount Saint Michael Academy in the Bronx where a played basketball for four years. Basketball is the main reason I came to Baruch because it was the best academic school that recruited me. I kind of wanted to leave the city for college but definitely appreciate how convenient staying in the city is. I am still able to hang out with a lot of my friends from my neighborhood and see my family whenever I want.

So far I like Baruch, for the most part. I was not nervous about making friends or meeting people here because I am not shy and do not get nervous easily. Also, I knew some kids on the basketball team already so i had people to ask for help if I needed it. Also I always have something to do during breaks. The thing I do not like, or simply have not adjusted to at Baruch is always having to check my e-mail and blackboard. I did realize that Phillip A. Hogue had sent me a personal e-mail 4 days ago telling me to do my first blog. I figured if it was from him  I better do it..
