President Obama has had to govern the country for about half his presidency with a House of Representatives composed of a majority of Republicans. Not an easy way to govern a country when most of the Congress is composed of your opposite political party. Barack Obama in his 2008 presidential election said he was going to bring change to the White House. He promised his presidency would be different compared to those presidents before him. Many people would argue that he has brought change to the White House while others would disagree. Barack Obama did not take over office in the best possible conditions. He was given many issues the country was facing three years ago, and some are still being face today. Some of the major issues are the War in Afghanistan, unemployment, education, immigration, heath care, and terrorism. It has not been an easy three years for Obama. The American people want answers and solutions to the biggest problems the country is facing. Some of these problems have been addressed, such as the end of the Iraq War, and the passing of a universal health care law, but many others have not been completed resolved. Many of these unresolved issues are affecting the American people on an everyday bases. Americans are tired of waiting for the government to solve these issues; they want them addressed now before it is too late. This takes us to the 2012 presidential race. Where Barack Obama has already declared himself to be the candidate for the Democratic Party. On the other hand the Republican Party has not yet chosen their candidate. Who ever the American people choose to be their next president, that person will have to face current and growing issues that will be tough to resolve.

One issue I believe has to be address as soon as possible is the issue of unemployment. Harsh economical times have left many Americans without a source of income to feed their families and provide them with what they did because they have lost their jobs. As of August 2011 the unemployment rate in the United States is 9.1%. Can you believe a country as powerful as the United States would have an unemployment rate near 10%? To me this is unbelievable. This country’s economy cannot grow without the unemployment rate being lower. The government needs to start creating more jobs in the United States, and stop watching countries like China take away jobs from Americans. According CNN the U.S. has lost about 2.8 million jobs to China since 2001. The person who wins the 2012 presidential elections needs to resolve this issue before we lose even more jobs to other countries.

Voices

Today we went to Mason Hall to watch the selected monologues get preformed. 90 were selected but roughly 20 were preformed. Out of the 20 that were performed 3 of them had been about either a student personally going through cancer or having their parent go through it. It was the most heartbreaking thing I have ever heard. Walking into Voices, I thought it would be a waste of time. It started off relatively bland and as the stories went on they got more and more personal. One story in particular made me cry. It was very inspiring to see my own peers open up in their writing and give us something that isn’t generic but something that is raw…something that is heartbreaking…something that is the truth.

Occupy Wall Street thoughts?

by michelle.rozenblyum | 1 Comment

Hey class,

The past two months have been filled with constant media coverage of Occupy Wall Street. Tommorow is the infamous day of action. According to the news, occupiers will have quite the impact on the city tomorrow. They are going to be not only occupying Wall Street but 16 subway stations, the Brooklyn bridge, and City Hall. What are your thoughts? Post pictures of protestors? Have you protested?
