1. i am a nice chilled boy from the heart of brooklyn. i like to play tennis, snowboard, paintballing, and hockey. i love to attend rangers games.
2. i am scared because i suck at reading and i have heard that this is a lot of reading and writing in college. although there are a lot less classes than high school it each one is more intense than high school.
3. there is more free time but i need to learn to manage my time more efficiently
4. i am learning a lot of what i am to expect this freshman year from chyrstal patrick in our freshman guidance class.
Hi this is my response to the blog:
1. Who do I “think” I am? I think my name is Anthony and I think I go to Baruch College but I’m not sure! But seriously, I’m just a teenager from Queens trying to make it in the adult world, if this is the adult world. I’m 5’2 (shorter than most men but not a midget!) and my ethnicity is Guyanese. I graduated from East New York Transit Tech high school with the intention of becoming an electrician and working for the MTA. I decided that this would not be the right path for me as it would not have many opportunities to move up unless I get a college degree. So I changed my career path and now I am pursuing a Finance major. I like to hang out with friends, play video games, basketball, and generally have fun when I can.
2. My main concern would be that college would just be an extension of high school instead of a new experience, at least that’s what its feeling like so far. I don’t want to have to go through the same routine, wake up, go to school, come home, I wanted to go to an out of state college where I could dorm and not have to worry about parents.
My second concern was that the professors would be very difficult. So far none of my professors seem that way, so I’m happy for that. The workload is manageable and they are quite forgiving if you forget something or mess up.
Lastly, I was very concerned that I would fail a course for not reading that summer book! Thankfully it didn’t matter as much as I thought it did, and I only read about half of it so far.
3. The key idea that would make the college experience different from a high school experience would be that I would have more freedom than I did in high school. In high school I was unable to bring electronics to school and we were scanned everyday like we were at an airport. You can also come and go as you please in college and you can’t get in trouble with the law for truancy.
Also I would have access to more competent teachers who are more skilled in their field of expertise and I would be able to establish from real connections which would help me greatly in the job market.
4. I don’t think my first year at college would really change me as I’m still transitioning from a high school mindset to a college mindset. Maybe after the first year I’ll “change”. I hope to join a club or fraternity to make new friends and get a feel for the school. I really hope Baruch College will be a welcoming home for me.
a. My name is Deepika. I am from Long Island, New York. I am 17 years old and love to draw and express myself through art. I love music and I love to daydream. I have big dreams for myself and I hope I can make them come true. I love to ice skate, cook, take photography, sing, play music, draw, play tennis, and spending time with people I love.
b. Share your top 3 concerns about your freshman year at Baruch College and explain why. My top 3 concerns…mmmmh.
1. Meeting new people: I’m not so great at meeting people. I love to make new friends but I’m not so good at it. It is always nice to have friends there to help you meet new people. Since I am from Long Island I feel that sometimes all the city kids have already got their close groups of friends and are fine. I’m wrong but this is just how it seems. I hope I meet more lovely people and make wonderful friendships this year.
2. Getting Adjusted: Switching from High School to College is a big move. Everything in High School was so spoon-fed. Everything was given, assigned and clearly explained. In college, I realized that everything depends on how much you want to put in and if you remember to do what you are supposed to do. I also know that college requires a lot of planning and structuring in order for me to get the most of my college education. I hope that this year will help me become a more savvy college student so I can achieve the most I can.
3. Getting Involved: I know that I need to get myself involved in activities and functions. I think that senior year may have made me a little lazy but I’m going to try to get out of this rut
c. So far, what do you think will make your Baruch College experience different from your high school experience? I think it is the element of independence that makes college so much more different from high school. I am responsible of everything I do and I must do everything on my own. I makes me realize that I’m not a little girl any more and that I have to fend for myself now. I have to rely on myself instead of family, peers and teachers. This true transition of becoming an adult is all so overwhelming but is an inevitable part of life and college. This independence will open doors and give me a push into the real world.
d. How do you think your first year at College will change you? My first of year of college will probably change me by allowing me to be more of my own person. In college there is no such thing as relying on others. College will most probably make me more passionate to work and aspire into a greater person in the future. I don’t know how much the first year will change me but I know that over the next 4 years some things will obviously change me.
a. Tell us who you think YOU are!
I am a Greek-American, who is from Astoria, NY. I am a devoted Orthodox Christian. I love to play hockey, I am a big Rangers fan, I love Mercedes-Benz, I like cars, I also play Basketball, Baseball, and I am a very good swimmer. I always love to help people and to talk to people.
b. Share your top 3 concerns about your freshman year at Baruch College and explain why.
Top 3 concerns are:
1. Doing well in class, this is a concern to me because I want to do well and make a difference in the terrible world we live in.
2. Taking the hockey team somewhere, we just made a Baruch Team, and I am the goalie and the team and I want to take the team somewhere good.
3. Making it to winter break as fast as possible, reason being is I love vacation.
c. So far, what do you think will make your Baruch College experience different from your high school experience?
Taking the train, not being in an all Greek environment, many more people in the class ( my whole graduating class was 30 people) and the diversity in subjects, people and ideas.
d. How do you think your first year at College will change you?
I do not think I will change too much, I have established my personality and my beliefs already.
a. Tell us who you think YOU are!
I believe my name is Mark Gakin and I am a city boy who was born and raised in Queens. I did live out in Jersey for about a year, but that was a small portion of my childhood I can barely remember. I moved around a few times, from Rego Park and to Forest Hills, where I currently reside now. I am a guy who loves sports, being active 😉 and is looking to have a blast in college.
b. Share your top 3 concerns about your freshman year at Baruch College and explain why.
My main concern is that I won’t get to party American Pie style. I know that most colleges aren’t like that, especially city ones, but I will try my best to make it happen. On an academic side, my other concern is that my grades won’t be so high. I can overcome this factor easily with some practice and effort. I do not have any other concerns, I would put making friends, but I already got that factor in the bag.
c. So far, what do you think will make your Baruch College experience different from your high school experience?
I think it will be very different, but at the same time fairly similar to my high school experience. Surely I will have more freedom here at Baruch, but I feel like I will still be staying up late doing hw just like in highschool. With the extra freedom I will, I will certainly try to do things I didn’t get to do in highschool, but the work load is either equal or more in most cases. I have to find ways to work around things.
d. How do you think your first year at College will change you?
I am not sure how to answer this right now, because colleges changes everyone in different ways, and at this point I do not know how it will change me, but I can say for sure that partying will not be the same again. Besides that, I think that college will definitely change my study habits 150%.
a. Tell us who you think YOU are!
I am someone who just wants to have fun with whatever I do and living my life the way I see it. I enjoy playing handball whenever I can. I’ve been told many times I’m a “chill” person, but I’ll let you be the judge of that. 🙂
b. Share your top 3 concerns about your freshman year at Baruch College and explain why.
1. Getting and maintaining a good GPA.- Self explanatory.
2. Getting to know other students.- With so much schoolwork, it is hard to balance social life and school.
3. Balancing school work and social life- ^
c.So far, what do you think will make your Baruch College experience different from your high school experience?
Because I am given so many choices in college, it is what I make of it. It’s probably getting involved with clubs or societies that will last a lifetime.
d.How do you think your first year at College will change you?
Stop. Procrastination. Hopefully.
a. Tell us who you think YOU are!
My name is Eugene Sarantis and I live in Astoria, Queens. Both of my parents are from Greece and we visit Greece at least once a year. I went to school at Saint Demetrios of Astoria; a Greek-American school.
My hobbies are soccer and cars.
b. Share your top 3 concerns about your freshman year at Baruch College and explain why.
1. Maintaining a high GPA because I want to do good in college.
2. Make new friends because most of my friends from high school are all Greek.
3. Getting a lot of assignments and not having much time for anything else.
c. So far, what do you think will make your Baruch College experience different from your high school experience?
In college their is a great diversity among the students, where as in my high school most of my friends were Greek like me. I think in college we have more free time but it is harder to keep track of all of our assignments.
d. How do you think your first year at College will change you?
I think my first year of college will make me more responsible.
a. Tell us who you think you are?
My name is Katherine Azeez, im 18 years old and I moved from Queens to Long Island in middle school. I am of Guyanese decent and I love meeting new people. I can be sarcastic at times but i mean well. I love to draw, listen to music, and hang out with my family and friends.
b. Share your top 3 concerns about your freshman year at Baruch College and explain why.
1. keeping up with the work load- many of my classes require a lot of time, so i hope ill be able to balance everything and not fall behind.
2. making friends- we all come to school to get an education, however having friends makes coming to school more tolerable. So far everyone seems to be very nice.
3. maintaining a good gpa- in order to succeed you need to do well in school, therefore i hope I’m able to get good grades consistently.
c. So far, what do you think will make your Baruch College experience different from your high school experience?
High School for me was great, i loved it, i had many friends and i got good grades, basically it was more laid back. College on the other hand is more demanding and time management seems to be harder at times. Baruch is definately more diverse than my high school, which is a nice change.
d. How do you think your first year at College will change you?
I think my first year at Baruch will mature me as a person, and make me more responsible.
a. I am a 18 year old Korean boy who lives in Queens. I am a son to my parents and also a student at Baruch College. I like to sleep and read.
b. 1. My first concern is to have a high GPA so I can transfer to NYU poly. I wasn’t able to attend this year due to money issues but I’m confident in my self that I will go to poly next year.
2. I am also concerned about my health. No matter how capable you are, it’s hard to get anything done if you’re unhealthy.
3. My final goal is to adjust to college life and become more independent.
c. In college, the professors expect students to do work and usually do not check homework. I expect to do more daily reading unlike high school where I would read mass amounts of information over short period of time before tests.
d. I think college will make me more organized and independent for sure. I am expected to hit deadlines with almost no exceptions and keep up with reading for class. I will also become more responsible since I am treated as an adult and given more freedom.
a. My name is Raimond. I’m still 17 unfortunately (my birthday is in December), and I’m originally from Jackson Heights, NY but recently moved to Levittown out in Long Island. I’m an Afghan-Hindu which is very rare, considering Afghanistan’s population has been about 99% Muslim for the past 25 years at least. I see myself as a freshman at Baruch, a die-hard Yankees fan, a handball player, a cool friend, and a future lawyer.
b. Three concerns I have about freshman year at Baruch is being able to manage my time wisely. I didn’t study enough last year for all of my classes at Hunter and got nothing higher than a B+. Also, something that has been a concern for me is being able to adjust to a somewhat segregated community at Baruch. I don’t like sticking to one ethnicity or one click, but noticing it on the day of Convocation intimidated me a little. Another concern I’ve been having is my commute because I haven’t adjusted to it yet. It’s taking me about two to two and a half hours to get home, which keeps me unproductive.
c. I’m expecting my experience my Baruch to have more freedom in the decisions I make. For the next four years, I’ll be able to choose my classes and be my own guidance counselor. Unlike high school, I would have to determine my strengths and weaknesses and use it as a basis to determine the classes I choose.
d. I hope this year in college will make me more responsible about doing my work and managing my expenses. Also, I still want to go to law school after attaining a B.B.A. in Finance, so I’m hoping I continue to follow my path after this year.
You all have been thoughtful in your responses! I enjoy getting to know each of you a little better through your writings.
Get your classmates to blog too!! I need a 100 percent success rate here.

1.I’m a regular guy from Brooklyn. I am still 17 because I graduated early and will turn “legal” in January. I love to snowboard, paintball, play basketball, and recently have joined mma. I see myself as a friendly student at Baruch college very lazy though.
2.My three concerns are getting good grades, getting good classes, and adjusting to college because the difference between college and high school is obvious and I look at college as the most important time in my life.
3. Baruch is different from high school because in Baruch, my education is completely up to me and that makes it completely different.
4.i hope that this year I will change my work tactics and become a responsible self reliant student.
