This article essentially speaks of how a republic requires both the government and its citizens to cooperate and work together in order to flourish. Citizens have always been active participants in community service, emphasized in the more recent years. If citizens continue to serve, the nation itself will also give back. To preserve the republic, the Universal National service seems to be the most reasonable and realistic approach.
One Response to “A Time to Serve”
This article is basically stating that in the minds of the youth. They believe, “America is in shambles so it is our time to help rebuild it.” “Polls show that while confidence in our democracy and our government is near an all-time low, volunteerism and civic participation since the ’70s are near all-time highs.”(STENGEL) The youth of the current generation are the most active since the youth of the 70’s, people otherwise called the “hippies”. Their actions are legendary, through their peaceful demonstrations they help boost the country and change government ways. Now our youths are doing the same. With their demonstrations and volunteering, America is rebuilding itself.
