    1. We had to read these articles because in the future, the career market is going to be even more difficult than it is now. Our networking skills will have to be top quality along with our business skills to get our foot in the door of an exceptional business. Through college extra-curricular activities, you meet people. Through those people, you can learn more about your major, their major, and simply explore ideas.

    2. Based on these articles, one can see how some people take networking as a piece of advice that can help you get hired. On the other hand, the next article defines it as a lifestyle. The lifestyle choice shows that there’s an actual, eager interest to learn and connect to others through working careers, even after being hired. It keeps you on your feet and keeps you growing intellectually through connections.

    3. Networking and/or referrals in the post-college job market will definitely impact the social decisions I make now. The more networking you do now can help boost positive referrals when it comes down to job hunting. Plus, you get to discover what job markets others are partaking in and how you can get to them as well, if one was so inclined.

Because everyone knows you can’t do anything by yourself, if there is a terrific referral for you, why not accept it. You’re definitely not sure that you could find a better job by yourself in a giant hunting market where you know nobody; hence, you’d better just follow the chance that someone gives to you and appreciate it.

1.The purpose of reading these articles where to give us a better understanding of how and why networking and participating in extra curricular activities such as clubs, are going to help us in the near future with connections to jobs, people, etc. We are faced with many challenges and bumpy roads are first weeks here in college and in order to over come them, we need to reach out of our shell and try to bring about a new person out of us in order to make our transition smoother for ourselves and others.
    2. Based on the two articles, the difference between networking being a lifestyle and the idea of referrals is most of the times when you network you meet people and by your first impression people can know what your character and demeanor is made of. Through your first impression, that shows people what you bring to the table. Meanwhile, the idea of referrals is people already know what you can do and how well you can do it, through this the work you show and put in reflects how good you are referred to a company, business, etc. They both go hand in hand besides having two different concepts.
    3. Will networking and/or referrals in the post-college job market impact the social decisions you make now? Definitely ! Without becoming a very social and interchanging individual with others, you are not succeeding in this college/life. You must find ways to get where you want to get and not just sit back and relax and let it come, life moves fast and with me not making moves to get where i want to be won’t get me to the top after Post-college. By the friends and staff I meet here at Baruch, ti will establish connections to those outside the campus.

The idea of referrals is people already know what you can do, and put in reflects how good you are referred to a company. In other hand, to establish the networking as the lifestyle will enhance you from those excellent people, and connect to others through working careers.

  9. Mengliu Tan says:

1.We were assigned to read these articles because it is necessary for us to know the importance of networking, not only for our college life but also for our “job hunting” in the future. We will meet a lot of challenge when we are seeking our career. However, networking will be valuable and very useful for us because good networking will bring us some qualified friends who will help us a lot in the future. In addition, participation in college extra-curricular activities will bring a lot of positive influence to our networking. It helps us to build strong relationships which are valuable to us.

    2. Based on these articles, the first one tells about how strong networking would help you get into your career. Good relationship brings you a much better chance to get a position when you are applying for a job. However, the second article tells about why and how you could make networking as your lifestyle. It would help you to do better and better in your career when you make it your own lifestyle because people around you will help you getting more stable on your job.

3.Networking and/or referrals in the post-college job market will impact the social decisions I make now because I believe that the stronger and better networking I make in college, the more valuable information and help I will get from it. People will always be influenced by those who are around them, thus good networking is valuable for us when we are making decision about hunting jobs in our near future. We will definitely get more important information.

    1. I believe we were assigned this reading to enhance our knowledge on networking and job hunting. College extra-curricular activities give individuals more opportunities to widen out and connect to other people or organizations.

    2. The difference between networking as a lifestyle and the idea of referrals is the way businesses go about hiring. For instance businesses that use the method of promoting products or services to new customers do so through word of mouth. Which simply means the idea of referrals depends mostly on who you know. On the other hand networking is long term process; the idea is to go about everyday like it’s a tryout. You are displaying your ability in exchange for a job opportunity.

    3. Yes they will affect my social decisions I plan on making in the future because I believe hundred percent in the idea that college extra-curricular activities help and are a major part of networking.

College Basket Ball Team and Theta Phi Gamma

  11. 1. We read these articles because people have gotten the idea of communication wrong. Just like the article says it’s not about how good you are at something. It’s more about who you know. The more activities you engage yourself in the more sources you can have. I like to think of it as war, the more allies you have the higher are your chances of winning.
    2. The difference is, you can either meet people or you can be beneficial to others. It’s like if you had a choice between two friends a doctor and a cashier(Regardless of personality). You would take the doctor because of the background he has. The other side is you can meet people, and if you appeal to the people you meet. They can have great benefits for you. Such as if you are starting a business and you need a professional painter. Let’s say your best friend is a painter and he agrees to paint at no charge under the demand that if he is ever in need. You will grant him a job, it saves you money and it benefits both of you.
    3. Yes because it’s like experience you have to start small and work your way up. For instance if you jump right to the point it’s like reading the last sentence of the book and thinking you know the whole book. It just does not work that way. That’s why I plan on having a deeper look inside extra-curricular activities.
    4. Pre-law ; Alpha Kappa Psi

  12. 1. We had to read this article because it tells us that we have to be ‘out there’ when we are studying in college and looking for a career. We have to meet, talk and socialize with other people. We cant be couch potatoes and just study all day because other people can be beneficial to us as we can be to them.
    2. The difference between these articles is that one article talks about how knowing people can be beneficial to us and in the other article meeting people is a lifestyle. But in both, they share the same idea that when we meet people they can be beneficial to us.
    3. Yes. If I get to know other people, then I can help them and in return they can help me hopefully. If they know an internship that are seeking the major i want to have a career in, then they can pass on the information to me and we can help watch other like that.
    4. MSA and Beta Phi Sigma

1.Those articles told as about having a good relationship with others is good for our future as the first article said that refferal offers numurous advantages.
2.Those articles both mainly talking about we should get more good relationships with others. I think the networking could help us get good relationship in order to put us in a good postion by getting referral in our carrer.
3.Yes. Because more referral u have means u get more good relationships with others. Those advantages could help others know that you have more experience with social communicating.
    4.Chinese club. Basketball team

  14. 1. There is no work that we can do alone. We need to cooperate. As we attend college, we are going to face lots of ‘new faces’. By networking, we can find people to cooperate. These articles tell us good relationship is the best property. By participating extra-curricular activities, we can make more relationship. Networking is just anothing word for having relationship.

    2. The first article talks about networking just for benefit, how to get a job by relationship(referral). However, the second article focuses on importance of winning friends, influence from them, and how to have good relationships.

    3. Sure. Both networking and referrals will give me variety informations about major field, not just major I’m interested in but also any things that I want to know, that I cannot get from books or news.

  15. ka.leung1 says:

    1. We have to read these articles because they help us to figure out that relationship and networking are very important. A better social network can bring you to a better job. Hunting for a job is not only depends on what you can do, the skill you have, also it depends on the skill of building relationship to others. As networking is very important to our career, we have to prepare during college. Through the joining of college extra-curricular activities, we can know more people and build up our social network. Maybe there is a person that will help you in your future job.

    2. The first article, “When Job Hunting, It’s Who You Know that Counts”, forces more on the hired chances. It says if you have a good social network, you got more hired chances because you know more people, more referrals. The second article, “Its Who You Know…and What You Can Do for Them”, forces more on the lifestyle. According to the article, “What can I learn from this person and how can I help them?”, it means your social network can help you to learn more and do better in your job. Therefore the difference between two article is one is talking about how networking affects before you getting a job, one is talking after.

    3. Networking and referrals in the post-college job market will definitely impact the social decisions I make now. Better networking can bring me a better job. Also, I can learn and gather more information for the job in my network.

    1. Networking will be extremely important in getting the job we want when we leave college. You need to know how to network and how to make those connections work for you.Participating in extra curricular activities in college will give you practice in socializing with people and starting conversations. It can also put you in the path of people you need to know after college.

    2. Networking as a lifestyle allows you to have connections everywhere in everything you do, and will allow for unexpected opportunities. When you network as a lifestyle, it can open doors you never even knew you were interested in. When you just use referrals, it can just get you into that one specific job.

    3. The social decisions you make now can be some of the most important. You don’t want to wait until you need connections to try and find them. Students should make an effort to keep in touch with people they make connections with, so when they leave college they have a starting point for a good network and you don’t have to build from scratch.

    4. I don’t know any clubs now.

  19. 1. The reason why we should network and try to become a part of different groups is because it is difficult to get into a good job directly out of college unless you know some people.

2.The difference is that referrals may only get you the job, where the actual lifestyle can allow you to improve your position not just stay at the same level.

    3. Yes they should encourage us all to try and network with different people so we have a head start once we finish college.

    4. La Unidad Latina, Basketball Team

    2. Networking as a lifestyle is about people are making friends as a lifestyle. On the other hand, focus the idea of refferals means that you go to make friends with the people who you can get benefit from them in workplace. 21. kar.ng says:

    1. Why did we have you read these articles? What is the connection between the idea of networking and participation in college extra-curricular activities?
Reading these articles will help us know more about how the real business world goes. If students n Baruch were to be involved in more extra-curricular activities then their network would expand further. This wide network will help the student be a lot more successful in the future.

    2. One of these articles talks about networking as a lifestyle, and the other focuses on the idea of referrals. Based on these articles, what is the difference?
Networking as a lifestyle is a person who meets people and make new friends as their job. Referrals means that a person meets other people with the idea in mind “How am I going to profit from this”. Either way i think would be a good idea since both ways have something to do with expanding one’s network.

    3. Will networking and/or referrals in the post-college job market impact the social decisions you make now? Why or why not?
It definitely would. If a person is still in college and has a great network, then that student would come out of college ahead of a person who starts a network after they come out of college. It would also impress the people that a student who is still in college is already starting his/her network.

    4. Find two clubs or organizations at Baruch College that would positively impact your post-college professional experience and list them here.
DSP Business Fraternity and Alpfa Organization.
