1. How did your community service work help the community?
- I did a walk with my mom for St. Jude called the Give Thanks Walk. My mom and i raised money for families who can’t afford to pay the hospital bills and the doctors at St. Jude never turn any family away.
2. What were your initial reactions upon hearing that you would be engaging in a community service project?
- Well, i was already doing this project with my mom so to use it as my community service was an even better perk to doing something good.
3. How did it make you feel to give your time and energy to others?
- It made me feel really happy knowing i was helping others who were less fortunate than i am.
4. What did you learn about yourself, the people around you, and the service site?
- My mom and i learned that these children are so full of life even though they are so sick. They truly make the best out of each day. All the people at the service site were very nice and happy to help you get checked in. They showed great passion for this project as well.
5. What stands out as the best and/ or most trying experiences that occurred while engaging in your community service project? What did you learn from these experiences?
- The best part was everyone meeting at the end after the walk. Everyone cheered and were so proud of how much money we had all raised. I learned how so many different people who are complete strangers can come together for a great cause to help others in need.
6. How did engaging in this project relate to your education and the larger issues in society?
- It made me realize how the world isn’t all about money or what new technology you have, that it is about family, health and love. Most of these children who become sick have to live in hospitals for years and their parents have to go through this with them and be as supportive as possible.
7. How did your community service experience relate to the “Leadership and Service” session?
- It related to the “Leadership and Service” session because it showed how helping people can be good for others and good for yourself.
8. How has your community service experience changed your thinking, attitudes, and actions towards others, yourself, the community, and community service work as a whole?
- My community service changed me by showing me how to help others who are in need. Also, because i am fortunate to be in good health and not have any medical issues makes me really appreciate my life and family. Therefore, i am happy to help sick children and raise money for them.
9. How has your community service experience impacted you personally? What is the most important thing you learned about yourself throughout this experience?
- I learned that my life is a lot better than i may think it is at times. I do tend to get stressed over school and work but these poor kids at such a young age are diagnosed so young and have to deal with doctors and hospitals instead of having a real childhood.
10. Were you satisfied with your experience overall?
- Yes i was, it made me feel great to help those awesome kids fighting for their health back.
11. Do you see yourself staying involved in the community during your college and adult years? Why or why not?
- Yes i do because my mom’s job works in with St. Jude to raise money every year.
12. Sum up your service-learning experience in a one-two-sentence headline.
- Health Yourself by Helping Others.
