Community Service

1. How did your community service work help the community?

  •  I did a walk with my mom for St. Jude called the Give Thanks Walk. My mom and i raised money for families who can’t afford to pay the hospital bills and the doctors at St. Jude never turn any family away.

2. What were your initial reactions upon hearing that you would be engaging in a community service project?

  • Well, i was already doing this project with my mom so to use it as my community service was an even better perk to doing something good.

3. How did it make you feel to give your time and energy to others?

  •  It made me feel really happy knowing i was helping others who were less fortunate than i am.

4. What did you learn about yourself, the people around you, and the service site?

  •  My mom and i learned that these children are so full of life even though they are so sick. They truly make the best out of each day. All the people at the service site were very nice and happy to help you get checked in. They showed great passion for this project as well.

5. What stands out as the best and/ or most trying experiences that occurred while engaging in your community service project? What did you learn from these experiences?

  • The best part was everyone meeting at the end after the walk. Everyone cheered and were so proud of how much money we had all raised. I learned how so many different people who are complete strangers can come together for a great cause to help others in need.

6. How did engaging in this project relate to your education and the larger issues in society?

  • It made me realize how the world isn’t all about money or what new technology you have, that it is about family, health and love. Most of these children who become sick have to live in hospitals for years and their parents have to go through this with them and be as supportive as possible.

7. How did your community service experience relate to the “Leadership and Service” session?

  • It related to the “Leadership and Service” session because it showed how helping people can be good for others and good for yourself.

8. How has your community service experience changed your thinking, attitudes, and actions towards others, yourself, the community, and community service work as a whole?

  • My community service changed me by showing me how to help others who are in need. Also, because i am fortunate to be in good health and not have any medical issues makes me really appreciate my life and family. Therefore, i am happy to help sick children and raise money for them.

9. How has your community service experience impacted you personally? What is the most important thing you learned about yourself throughout this experience?

  • I learned that my life is a lot better than i may think it is at times. I do tend to get stressed over school and work but these poor kids at such a young age are diagnosed so young and have to deal with doctors and  hospitals instead of having a real childhood.

10. Were you satisfied with your experience overall?

  • Yes i was, it made me feel great to help those awesome kids fighting for their health back.

11. Do you see yourself staying involved in the community during your college and adult years? Why or why not?

  • Yes i do because my mom’s job works in with St. Jude to raise money every year.

12. Sum up your service-learning experience in a one-two-sentence headline.

  • Health Yourself by Helping Others.

a. Tell us how your experience at Baruch College has lived up to your expectations? Not lived up to your expectations? Exceeded your expectations?

  • My experience at Baruch so far had lived up to my expectations. I love coming to school in the city, expect when it is super cold out. I like the atmosphere and all the new people. I honestly thought i wouldn’t meet people like me or that i would get along with, but i actually met many. I have never been a big fan of school, but i really like college thanks to coming to Baruch.

b. How well do you think your first semester at Baruch College went?

  • I feel that my first semester at Baruch went really well. I honestly thought i was going to fail everything. Thank god i didn’t and happily passing, if finals go well. I also think i learned a lot my first semester like how to get around all the aspects of the library, the layout of the buildings and how fast i can grab a coffee before class and not be late.

c. What would you do differently during your first semester if you could do it all again?

  • I would be a little more focused and organized. I would also study more so i can get my grades a little higher.

d. How have you changed since you started at Baruch College?

  • I don’t think i have changed but i feel as if i opened up more. I am a loud, funny, bubbly kind of person and i really let that show by making new friends. I just didn’t care what people thought and that made me more relieved when meeting new people. Baruch helped me open up to new people.

  • I never really missed high school and I still do not. High school for me was a really fun time that had a great ending. I think to myself sometimes that all good things come to an end and it is okay to move on.
  • College is full of all different kinds of people, experiences, cultures, and new friends. It seems at times I am taking on something bigger than me. But this makes the challenge “oh so much sweeter”.
  • College is a lot more involved with you being on top of your school work. It takes a lot more studying to do well on a test, rather than when you were in high school. This for me has to be the hardest aspect of college thus far. I can’t start to explain how I used to get 80’s and 90’s on tests in high school without studying. I am a good audio learner and that will be very helpful in the next 4 years.
  • Studying and school work isn’t just what college is all about for me. The experience is what it is about too. Now I’m not going to sit here and act like we all aren’t thinking the same thing. The parties, the clubs and those crazy nights that Facebook will replay for you via mobile upload. Choosing Baruch wasn’t just for academic purposes, “Hello we are in New York City.” Shopping central of America, any kind of food you can think of and the most amazing night life. This is one of the perks to going to school in Manhattan.
  • Now back on a serious note, I want to major in business marketing. I want to focus on fashion or make up. I truly have a passion for both. I wake up every day and those are the first two things I think of, what am I going to wear? And what make up am I going to put on today? Rachel Zoe who is a celebrity stylist inspires me. She has an amazing look on fashion and dresses amazing herself. Kim Kardashian wears stunning make up and clothes that are always being spoken about. I would love to promote something I am passionate about and show others that wearing what you want makes a fashion statement.
Me at my Senior Prom, being my funny self and enjoying every moment. :]

A. Tell us who you think you are ?

I’m a sister, daughter, aunt, girlfriend, best friend,co-worker, singer, leader, passionate, loving, creative, and loyal person. That is me a nut shell. I’m from Staten Island, NY and i have lived here all my life. I’m almost 18, October 21st is my birthdat! I am aslo Italian.

B. Share your top 3 concerns about your freshman year at Baruch College and explain why.

My first concern has to go with studying. I need to start way ahead of time i am noticing and become more organized. I also need to find more time, when there isnt enough. I need to learn which way of studying works for me so i can pass an not fail out of college, haha!

My Second concern is, well if you couldnl’t have guessed it, FAILING!! I hate to fail at anything and espically with college being such a big deal. Basically i need to do my best and not fail because that is a huge fear of mine.

My Third concern is overall keeping up with everything i have going on. I want to see my friend and have a soical life. I want to work and make money while not conflicting with school stuff. I want to be on top of all of my school work and studying so i can relax and not feel stressed 24\7!

C. So far, what do you think will make your Baruch College experience different from your highschool experience?

I fell that joning and being more involved will make my Baruch experience better than my highschool experience. My last year of highschool was when i got involved with clubs and shows the most which made it the best year for me in school. I hope to do the same here at Baruch.

D.How do you think your first year at college will change you?

I think my first year in college will make me a better student. In highschool i would do good, even though if i just put a little more effort i could do great. With college all that matters is that grade and that it what i want to work on. I want to change how i look at school work and just do better , go above my norm.
