a. Tell us how your experience at Baruch College has lived up to your expectations? Not lived up to your expectations? Exceeded your expectations?

my experience at Baruch college has lived up to my expectations because I’ve been able to understand the work given to us by professors. I think I have become accustomed to their way of teaching and the work they give. The ways it hasn’t lived up to my expectations is that I thought  or at least hoped that it would be funner or that I would enjoy it more. I also dislike that it feels as if I don’t have any time for anything but school so that’s kind of annoying.

b. How well do you think your first semester at Baruch College went?

I think it went pretty well but maybe not as good as it could of been in terms of school work. I want my other semesters to be better, in school work.
c. What would you do differently during your first semester if you could do it all again?

I would of studied more for certain classes. Maybe have joined a club. I wish I had classes at an early time so I could have time for other important activities in the afternoon.Also, I wouldn’t have taken a class on a Saturday, not that I chose to.
d. How have you changed since you started at Baruch College?

Im exactly the same. Can’t think of a way that I have changed

Since I didn’t go to an actual community service event, I wrote the 4 page essay. So  I’ll just blog about a past volunteer experience.

 

1. How did your community service work help the community?

 

I was assisting in a hospital, mainly putting together informational pamphlets and also packets that patients had to fill out.

 

1. What were your initial reactions upon hearing that you would be engaging in a community service project?

 

I wasn’t too excited, it isn’t that I see it as a waste of time but i rather be doing things I enjoy with my time.

 

1. How did it make you feel to give your time and energy to others?

 

It did feel like a waste of time once again because I wasn’t doing something I enjoyed. And I also remember how boring it was. having to do something like volunteering and it be mandatory takes the fun and enjoyment out of it. It just makes it another tedious task.

 

1. What stands out as the best and/ or most trying experiences that occurred while engaging in your community service project? What did you learn from these experiences?

 

The best experience was just getting the credit for high school, it was a requirement. 

 

1. How did engaging in this project relate to your education and the larger issues in society?

 

I just got to see a lot of people that are turned away for treatment because they didn’t have insurance, so that was really sad and made me think a lot about what the country considers a priority and health doesn’t seem to be a top one.

 

1. How did your community service experience relate to the “Leadership and Service” session?

 

It taught me about the different positions of leadership and the many roles one must fit at once.

 

1. How has your community service experience changed your thinking, attitudes, and actions towards others, yourself, the community, and community service work as a whole?

It changed my attitude towards those doing office jobs like the one I experience since I know have more respect for those jobs because I know how boring and dull they can be.It changed my attitude by making me realize I don’t want a job like this. Ever. Now I know if I ever participate in community service I will take part in an event whose purpose I believe in or that at least includes work in it that I would enjoy.

 

1. How has your community service experience impacted you personally? What is the most important thing you learned about yourself throughout this experience?

 

Once again as stated before, I have realized what I want to do with the rest of my life, and it doesn’t involve a tedious clerical job in the medical field.

 

1. Were you satisfied with your experience overall? Why or why not?

 

No I was not. I had to work with some very miserable and grouchy people that obviously didn’t enjoy their job very much. So just having negative people around me ruined my overall experience as well.

 

1. Do you see yourself staying involved in the community during your college and adult years? Why or why not?

 

I definitely would love to participate in more community service but I will now be more aware as to which type of events I choose. I thick it is a great opportunity to meet people and help and give back to the community overall. Community service although in my past has not been very pleasing it has taught me a lot so I will continue to take part in it.

 

1. Sum up your service-learning experience in a one-two-sentence headline.

 

If you find joy in helping others and participating in community activities it doesn’t seem as long or time-consuming.

This is possibly one of the more confusing things I’ve had to write, as I’m not sure how it’s supposed to go exactly. My name is Krystal. I was born and raised in Queens,  New York. I’m colombian. Right now, I’m on the path, hopefully the right path, to the future I have envisioned for myself. The free writes we wrote in class are really not helping this monologue. I guess I’ll just blab on about what I hope for myself. I’m hoping of course to graduate college, mostly to be more of a well rounded individual. My dream since I was really little is to be a pastry chef, and I am going to go to culinary school after I graduate college. Hopefully my college degree will allow me to work in the food industry beyond just the kitchen as well just because I like being able to try different things.

College hasn’t been what I thought or heard of it to be.. If that makes sense? I was always told it was so hard and that the people are so different, mature…But I feel as if it has been the total opposite of what I have heard for so long. Yeah, it’s hard but when I was younger, with the things they said, they made college seem like a nightmare. I am excited a little about being able to pick my own classes next semester, and cannot wait to be done with the core classes as well. I’m hoping these 4 years are the fastest of my life because I just want to hurry up and graduate. I actually really dislike classes like these, where I have to talk about myself, or even classes that involve group work, but I do understand that unfortunately that’s what its like in the “real world”.Uhmm.. there isn’t really much to discuss. One thing I can honestly say I’m excited about in college is studying abroad, which I’m really hoping I get the chance to do.  This is the most random paper I’ve ever written.

 

The picture I have attached is one my cousin made for me, she is 5 and I just thought it was cute. Although I look absolutely nothing like the picture, it was still sweet.

a.Tell us who you think YOU are!

I’m a new yorker, born and raised in Queens…My parents are Colombian, I guess that’s part of who I am. I’m serious, goal-oriented, and I’m not sure what else, I’m guessing thats what college will help me figure out.

b. Share your top 3 concerns about your freshman year at Baruch College and explain why.

1.Exams- In general, I extremely dislike taking tests and in highschool it was easier to take them just because teachers gave                  you outlines or exact questions to study from that the exam would be on. In college the professors give you so much reading                to do from different books that I have no idea what I even have to study.

2. Social life- I feel like I won’t really make friends in college just because I’m not really social or even at all comfortable in                      social settings. I’m not even interested in writing this post right now. For some reason I thought the people in college                          would be different, I guess from what I was always told about college I expected it, but it is just like high school. Most                          people seem still very immature

3. Actually passing. I think in high school it was easier to see if I was passing. In college you think your handing in all of                        the assignments good but then you receive your grade. I don’t want to be a failure, I want to actually do good in college                          and not pass with a mediocre grade.

c. So far, what do you think will make your Baruch College experience different from your highschool experience?

Its already so different. The professors ways of teaching and the workload they give. Also, making your own schedule is very different from high school, you can choose what days of the week you want to come to school and the classes you will take on that day. I feel that in high school its sort of mandatory to be there, but in college its a choice you make, of whether or not you want to have a college education, this is what mostly makes it different because the students are a bit more eager to be here since its a choice they made as opposed to them being forced to come to college.

d. How do you think your first year at college will change you?

I doubt it will change me too much, since it is just the first year. I do think I will possibly learn how to study better since in high school I never really had to study much. I think it will change me by making me even more responsible since now I mostly have to do things on your own, not like high school where it’s like teachers are holding your hand through all of it. Maybe I’ll become more social since in high school I never really wanted to be friends with any of the kids that went to my school. I’m hoping this first year of college will help me decide what I want to do with my life and have a better idea of what career I want to have.
