Final Post

a. My experiences at Baruch College have been amazing. I’ve met so many great people and was very lucky to have some great professors. The professors overall were what I expected coming into college.

b. I definitely feel I could have done more during my first semester to have done better on tests, but I’m pretty satisfied with everything. I got to explore the campus and was able to find some great places to eat at because of a couple of professors.

c. If I’d have to do something differently, it would probably be trying to put more effort into studying for exams. Other than that, again I think my first semester went well and I hope to continue to do even better in the upcoming years.

d. Since I started at Baruch College, my writing’s definitely improved. I think academically, I’ve changed. I haven’t changed as a person though, I’m pretty much the same, just a little more stressed.

a. Talk about how your experience at Baruch lived up to your expectations. Not lived up to your expectations? Exceeded expectations?
Baruch has not lived up to my expectations so far as it feels just like high school to me minus the one hour commute. Perhaps in the future I’ll be challenged intellectually and physically when I have to spend a significant amount of time on studying and doing school work.
b. How well do you think your 1st semester went?
It went by faster than I expected since I only have three school days per week.
c. What would you do differently this semester if you could do it again?
Take studying seriously, less procrastination as it killed my average hours of sleep, make more friends, participate more in classes. I understand shyness is something many of us need to overcome.
d. How have you changed since you started at Baruch college?
I learned about the serious consequences of procrastination and is now trying to get rid of this unforgiving habit.

Community Service

Freshman Seminar Course #: LC06
Name of Community Service Organization/Activity: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk
1. How did your community service work help the community?

My job at the walk was to encourage and cheer for the walkers, instead of doing any actual walking. I feel that I helped the “against breast cancer” community by showing them that college students have their backs.

2. What were your initial reactions upon hearing that you would be engaging in a community service project?

It was definitely a surprise. I’ve done a lot of community service work during my high school years, I figured I’d have no extra time for CS in college.
3. How did it make you feel to give your time and energy to others?

I wouldn’t call standing and making noise for walkers “giving my time and energy to others”. I am disappointed about the job my peers and I were assigned.
4. What did you learn about yourself, the people around you, and the service site?

I didn’t learn anything about myself or the breast cancer movement as all I did was cheer and I already knew quite a bit about the movement. The service site was chaotic, I had to ask around to find my peers.
5. What stands out as the best and/or most trying experiences that occurred while engaging in your community service project? What did you learn from these experiences?

I learned that the ones against breast cancer are very enthusiastic when it comes attending walks, but what about when it comes to donating money from their pockets?
6. How did engaging in this project relate to your education and the larger issues in society?

The breast cancer walk had no relation to my education. This project relates to one of the biggest issue in our society: people’s lack of knowledge on how the donations are spent. We all believe we’re doing the right thing by participating in walks and donating money, but do you really know where the money goes and how they’re used?
7. How did your community service experience relate to the “Leadership and Service” session?

It shows me a walk without proper leadership could be a waste of man power and time. My peers and I were not led by someone knowledgeable. He gave me the impression that he’s improvising, telling us what to do on the spot.
8. How has your community service experience changed thinking, attitudes, and actions towards others, yourself, the community, and community service work as a whole?

It had no impact on my thoughts and attitude toward anything because my role was too small to generate any significance.
9. How has your community service experience impacted you personally? What is the most important thing you learned about yourself throughout this experience?

I believe supporting the walkers by cheering has no educational value.
10. Were you satisfied with your experience overall? Why or why not?

I’m not satisfied. It feels as if it created no impact at all. How would you describe the contribution of someone standing in a designated spot and cheering for others?
11. Do you see yourself staying involved in the community in your college and adult years?

If my involvement makes a significant impact and is efficiently planned, I’ll definitely lend a hand.

End of the Semester

1. My first semester at Baruch College has exceeded my expectations. I did so much that I think this will by far be the most entertaining semester of college. I joined a team, became a member of a fraternity, and did well in school. I don’t know if college will ever be the same again.

2. I think my first semester was a success and other semesters will be extremely difficult to follow up the one I just had.

3. If I could change one thing this semester it would be to have studied a little harder.

4. College has changed me in that it taught me how much harder things are then they were back in high school.

b) My first semester was a struggle in the begginning but then I adjusted to it and feel that I got into the rhyth, of things by balancing school, work and my social life.

c) If I would change anything this semester it would probably the amount of sleep i was getting. Sleep is important and I learned I do better in school if I rest.

d) Since i started baruch I think I have become more responsible and confident with my school work and studying skills.

The semester is finally over

At the end of my first semester I can definatly say I love it here at Baruch and I’m excited for the rest of my years here. I love the diversity and the ambition in the students’ eyes. The amount of clubs amazed me. I didn’t join one yet but next semester I’m planning on looking into it. This semester was pretty hard at first but then got better when I got adjusted. Overall, I think I did pretty good. I do wish I didn’t procrastinate as much though. I think I had some minor changes since coming to Baruch but I think the bigger changes are to come as my schooling progresses.

8. How has your community service experience changed thinking, attitudes, and actions towards others, yourself, the community, and community service work as a whole? Being involved with community service my whole life taught me all of these things, so this specific one didn’t change me, but only enhanced it.

10. Were you satisfied with your experience overall? Why or why not? Absoluty because every small action adds up.

About Me

My name is Laura Stamm. I’m from long island but moved to Manhattan to go to school at Baruch. I miss my family more than anything. I will forever believe I have the best family in the whole entire world. However, I felt the need to get out of the house to further my education here. I’m really glad I got into Baruch because business has always been a huge interest of mine. I’ve always been jealous of listening to my dad and brother talk about business and me not knowing what they are talking about. I intend on traveling the world and learning about as many cultures as possible because I feel left out only knowing about the long island culture. Therefore, I’m going for international business and am hoping that I thrive in it.

Baruch College has somewhat lived up to my expectations. I knew that I was going to have to work a whole lot harder than how I did in high school. It stressed me out. I’ve got to meet new friends and communicate with them. I didn’t get to join a club or anything yet, but I plan on joining one later in the school year. My first semester I felt like it was really hard on me because I really never done so much work compared to high school. It was a real pain to wake up so early in the morning to go to class and attempt to stay awake. If I could redo my first semester, I for sure would try to stop procrastinating and cramming everything together, this way it’d be easier on me. I would’ve tried to join a club and get more involved. Since I started Baruch College, I felt like I have changed my sleeping pattern because I do things so late and that I didn’t have as much time as I thought I would.

First semester

Baruch College lived up to my expectation. Most of my classes weren’t hard and a few were. I made friends that I’m sure will be there for me when I need them. There were many clubs , so if I ever wanted to join a club I certainly will be able to.
Well my first semester at Baruch was okay, I can’t say how well I did but I did try my best, and I think that’s what matters most.
If I could start my first semester all over again, the few things i would do are try even harder, join at least one club and join a sport team.
I have changed since I started Baruch, I have learned a lot about life.  I’m not saying bad things but things that I have never noticed before I really started to notice. My classes really changed the way I look at the world.
