Post 3 (I don’t know if this is too late, but I still felt like writing something)

I don’t know if this too late, but I still felt like writing about my first semester, so here it is:

A. My experiences at Baruch College, overall, have far more than lived up to my expectations. I’ve enjoyed nearly every minute, and I knew I made the right college choice.

B. I think my first semester went pretty well. Some classes were not as “easy” as I thought they’d be, but I appreciated an academic challenge that I had never faced before. I feel like I made many new friends, many of them more relatable than most of the people I knew in high school. Despite all the work, my four months at Baruch were far happier than my four years of high school.

C. If I could do anything differently, I would’ve tried to have gotten more involved on campus. I plan to join some clubs in the spring though, so it gives me something to look forward to. I would’ve also tried to take advantage of SACC, but I think my GPA this semester will be turn out just fine. Also, I would try to not procrastinate.

D. I already can tell that Baruch has greatly changed me. I don’t know why, but I feel much more mature and self-confident. I feel more like a leader and less like a follower, which I think is a part of college.

I guess this is the end for Freshmen Seminar, but I had a great time, and hope to see all of my classmates again in the future.

My Community Service Experience

Before I even knew community service was a requirement, i volunteered to go help on a day out with autistic children. The plan was that the kids and parents were going to meet the volunteers at a local bowling alley for a couple of games. The main point of this outing was to help the kids bowl, and get them away from their parents a little. The point was that WE should be the ones helping the kids, and let the parents sit back and relax. This was my first time dealing with autistic children so it was a handful at first. They don’t really have a regard for the right and wrong thing to do so they just do whatever they feel like, which ended up being annoying and cute at the same time. All the volunteers got assigned to a child and my child was a girl named Alyssa who was 5 years old. She was really cute, but i could tell right away that she wasn’t going to be easy to handle. She wanted to stay with her mother for the most part and didn’t really respond to me when I tried to talk to her. Finally, by the end of the game, I got her to take my hand and we bowled a pretty good shot together. Volunteering with autistic kids was a great experience. It helped me learn a lot about the disease but opened my eyes to the fact that just because a child is sick, doesn’t mean they’re not a child. They still like to laugh and play just like any other healthy kid. I’m really glad i volunteered my time to doing it.

third session

In the third session we were told about keeping an eye on our Facebooks in the workplace, and the fact that companies are using facebooks to gain information about their employees, such as a woman who called in sick was fired because her boss saw her update her status. I do not agree with this because i believe monitoring someone’s facebook is a violation of their privacy.

second session

In our second session we went to a conference room in Baruch and were shown different majors and the career opportunities that they offered. Very fascinating and helpful in deciding on a possible major and career path choice.  I also went to the second part of this session later on.

First session

Our first session was when we went over how much credits we were required to have in order to graduate, and we were given a checklist of all available topics and told how much each is worth and how to choose for minor/major. Not too helpful, I didn’t really understand at that time.

community service

i volunteered in children center that is located in long island.

children were 5~8 year old kids and they were adorable. Sometimes they fought and got in trouble but they were still very young and innocent. i loved my experience there and even though i dont get along that well with young children, they liked me and i love them with their small cheeks.. At their snack time, they had assigned seat.  Teacher ,named Christine, was really nice and knew how to controll them.

so how was this first semester?

First semester was alright. I think I did well I did all my work I’m expected two As, and A-, a B+ and I think another B+ (it could be higher though I didn’t do the math yet but godwilling its a B+ or higher). It’s a bit weird getting Bs to me, since in high school I was used to getting all As but college is different. You really have to look at how the grades are done. The class I’m getting a B+ in really is an easy A if you think about it, but I slacked off on one of the tests I could have gotten in the 90s or so but found in the 80s. I guess when you think of a class as easy you don’t take it as seriously and then end up with a grade you didn’t really expect.

I don’t think I would do much different except maybe manage my time better… this whole semester was about managing time better… I would have definitely have tried to change my english professor the first day though and get somebody better. I did the best I could do. I do know that I have to like, when I do work say an essay only focus on that essay and don’t multitask and go on facebook. I’ve realized that multitasking takes up a lot of productive time.

I haven’t changed much since starting. I’m still same old Nikki, quiet, shy that’s just my character although I’ve taken more initiative now and maybe more responsible and wiser.

workshops

One of the first workshops I went to was a USG meeting… it was interesting, I liked how they brought food especially since I was very hungry. It makes attending sort of worthwhile. It was interesting being there and seeing what happens, also interesting to see that the student government does have a voice and does a lot. Back in high school I wondered what exactly did my student government do, they seemed useless to me. We had Presidents but I never saw much changes in the school.

We then went to this academic advisement workshop… it was kind of boring since I remembered a majority of the things from convocation plus I already know the core curriculum by now and what’s expected of me. Then we went to this info-literacy one which was kind of different not the usual check if your source is trustworthy but ehh it wasn’t that engaging.

Then Baruch Voices was interesting, just it got really sad towards the end… I was a bit sad since no one from my LC got theirs performed. They put up a lot of depressing ones up there. I’m actually quite surprised some students were willing to put something so heartbreaking and personal about their lives, I would never have much courage to do something like that.

career workshop #1

I found the first career workshop to very informative. It helped me see that one major can be used in different ways. My management major with a psychology minor can be used together very nicely. It also showed me that a management position would be well suited for my interests and could be used in various ways. I was unsure if my major was well suited for me before the workshop but it was reassuring to see that it does fit with my personality and interests. I also learned that my psychology minor also would go a long way with my management major as they both would help me in the office workplace.
