Resume Workshop
For my third event I attended a resume workshop. Although I have a resume from high school, I wasn’t really sure how a professional resume should look like and what it should include. This was very informative because I learned a few things that I didn’t know about resumes before. I thought that it was helpful and I was also provided with a booklet of sample resumes, which I think help me a lot.

Voices
I thought that this performance was better than the first Voices. Although I was really hoping that one of the monolouges that were from our class would have been read, they were all interesting. Also although most of them were a bit depressing I enjoyed listening to them.

Rubin and Voices
The Rubin Museum was kind of interesting. The two pieces of art i had to look at were actually really cool. I found out that one of them was used as a beer dispenser. The walk there was the only thing that damped the trip because it seemed like it took forever to get there. But, seeing this kind of art was different from what i am used to seeing so it was a nice change.
Voices was nothing that new because I saw it before. I was disappointed because nobody’s paper from our LC was picked. Plus every other paper that was read was depressing , which killed my mood for the day. Overall it was a good performance, but not something i would want to see every year.

Baruch Voices
I already knew how Baruch Voices was going to be like because of the first one I saw before school started. I think most of the monologues were too depressing. I don’t know how people are able to tell their whole life story, especially depressing ones, to strangers that they’ve never met before. I would not be comfortable at all telling someone something so personal and deep about me if I don’t even know what their name is. Sitting through Baruch Voices was a little too depressing for me. Because we’re in a school environment, I think it would have been better if the monologues presented were more inspiration than depressing. Plus, as Jerry said, I really wanted to hear David’s monologue but I guess I never will. 🙁

Basic Interviewing Skills
On Tuesday, 11/22/11, I went to the workshop “Mastering the Job Interview: Basic Interviewing Skills.” It was very informative and helpful. It taught how one should dress to an interview and how to act accordingly. I learned several do’s and dont’s. For example, one shouldn’t talk on the phone during an interview or give lousy answers. One thing that people should do at interviews is maintain eye contact with the interviewer. Another thing is to give a firm handshake instead. I also learned that you should follow up after the interview by sending a thank you letter, usually via email. I also learned that you should never be negative, even when you’re declining a job offer because you may work with that company later in the future. We also discussed many of the basic questions they ask you during an interview and how you should answer them. Overall, this workshop was very organized and really focused on how to speak and act during an interview.

Voices
To be honest, I really thought that the production was a bit ‘much’. Don’t get me wrong – I thought the idea is great and the motivation was genuine. I originally liked the idea of hearing about my fellow freshman in a anonymous fashion. But in sitting there, listening to the monolouges, I started to just get tired of the repetativness of it. The first “Voices” we went to during convocation was pretty much the same, and there was very little variety in the subject matter.
Like David said, it was just a bunch of ‘sob stories’. I don’t mean to take away from the individuals who wrote many of the monolouges, or degrade them in any way. A lot of them lived through terrible circumstances, and they’re all the better for pulling through while being full-time students. But listening to all of the upsetting, depressing, emotionally charged monologues kind of makes the whole production jaded. I can’t listen to story after story while treating them each individually and giving each the respect it deserves. Eventually, they all blend into one another and turn into one giant, huge combination of choking back tears and yelling.
So while the event sounded good on paper, it ended up being long and a bit boring. I don’t mean that in an offensive way, and apologize if anyone disagrees with me. In as objective a view as I can possibly adopt, I think that the “Voices” production is a bit overrated.

Rubin Museum
I found the museum pretty interesting, although it was a bit of a hike away from the school. I was suprised to find learn that the museum building had originally been tenament housing, as the it seemed to be in pristine condition during our tour. I’m not a big museum guy, and I’m not particularly partial to Himalayan Art, but I though the experience was worth it. We’re in college right? The idea is to expand our thinking and be ‘cultured’ and such. I’ll probably have no use for any of the information i learned while at the museum (just like much of the things we learn in school), but who knows; maybe one day it’ll be relevant, and I’ll be glad I had this experience.

Resume Workshop
For my third workshop, I attended a resume writing course. Although I already have a resume, I went because I wanted to learn how to not only make my resume concise but also how to better adjust it for college since my old one is from high school. I learned that the most effective way to get your point across is to use power verbs when beginning each bullet to describe one’s capabilities. Also, I learned that one should include the results of one’s performance, especially if it helped in earning more profit for a company. Overall, I thought that this workshop was really helpful and I feel more prepared in writing a proper resume than I did before I attended the workshop. I also liked that they gave a mini booklet to keep because I can always refer back to in the future regarding how to sharpen my resume and cover letter.

Voices
I actually liked this performance better than the Voices we saw during convocation. My favorite monologue was the one that was written in text messages because it was really cute. However, I thought that a lot of the monologues in this performance were much more depressing than the first one. Even though the content was very relatable, I think that the people organizing voices should have had a better balance between the types of monologues performed rather than having predominantly serious and sad monologues.

Rubin Museum
I thought that our visit to the Rubin Museum was actually really interesting. Since I am of South Asian decent, I was able to identify with many of the sculptures that came from the Indian region. I also found it fascinating how Indian culture and religion was described on the small plaques next to the individual statue, even though it differed from what I was taught growing up. I also thought that it was really cool that the museum used to be an old tenement building.
