A Time to Serve – Kasper

Community service is important in every community.  Community service helps build the foundation for a strong community.  Community service brings people together.  It helps make the community a better place.  But most importantly of all, is shows that you care about your community and others.

Leadership is very important when it comes to community service.  Without leadership, it is hard to get people together to engage in community service.  And without leadership, you would not be able to organize large projects that really affect the community.

In my opinion, the best way to boost volunteerism and civic participation is to inform people that there are volunteering opportunities.  The biggest reason people do not participate in community service is because that do not know about them.  By increasing awareness, you can greatly increase the number of community service participants.

The value and importance of engaging in community service is a something we do for ourselves to make ourselves better people. It is a way to step away from your life and help other and see how truly blessed you are. There are so many people in this world that need our help and if everyone just did a little we can make the world a better place.

I think that community service is a very person thing to do and you do not necessarily need a leader to help you. obviously you need someone to plan and organize a fund raiser or event. but you should be doing community service for yourself and not because you are following someone.

We can boost volunteerism and civic participation on the Baruch campus by all doing our share. We can raise money for important charities, and show support for those who need. Personally I think the best time of community service you can do is to spend time one on one with someone in need.

“A Time to Serve” Article– Post #2

I believe one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had was when I volunteered in Ronald McDonald’s House of Charities. Baking, cooking, playing games with the children and seeing the big smile on their faces, made the experience unforgettable. From this and other experiences, I realized that helping others, in any way, big or small, is something that I really enjoy. It’s something that can really make you feel good and proud about yourself. We’re never asked to do much for others. It’s something that should not be asked. We should want to do it. In this country, there are so many people that need a helping hand. As residents and citizens of this country, we’re not asked to do much, for the country in general, other than pay taxes and vote. So, volunteering and helping citizens that are less fortunate than us shouldn’t seem like too much. We should be thankful for what we do have but also remember those out there who don’t have that. Something we ask for more things and want more, not because we need it, but  just because we ant it. We should remember that we at least have a home, food, clothing; others don’t even have that.

Community service is an important part of helping others. We may think that all we can do is give money, but that’s not true. There are other things people appreciate more than just money. For example, giving up some of your free time to spend with children in the hospital, cooking and serving at soup kitchens, waking up early and walking in a cancer walk, baking and selling to fund raise fora good cause. These are things that people will sometimes be more thankful than money because it shows that you went out of your way to help out. We all can give money, whether we care about the cause or not, whether we give thousands or just a few dollars. However, not many gives up their time and effort to be there showing how important and how much you care for something. Knowing we helped out and did the right thing is a satisfying feeling we should all want to feel.

The relationship between leadership and community service projects is very simple. A leader leads a group to help others [and themselves] reach a common goal. A community service project is a goal that a group of people are a part of to help others. Every community service project has a leader. By going out of your way and volunteering in a project, you become a leader. Although you may not be leading the project, you become a leader to your friends and classmates who are not part of the project yet. If they see your interest in volunteering, you may encourage them to join the cause and help out too making you a leader. You can make the change with in your group of friends. You can be an inspiration to them while helping the less fortunate as well.

To promote volunteer work at Baruch, we should have more volunteer events in the college. However, we have to keep in mind that it may be difficult for some to attend since they may be working or have a class. Events should be created when we know a majority can be part of it. You can also make it mandatory like in class like Freshman Seminar. Another way to boost volunteerism is by giving credit to the volunteers. As volunteers, we should not want to help out to get something in return, but sometimes it does feel nice to feel appreciated and recognized for what you did. We should also do more things that students find interesting or something in which they can get something out of it too. For example, having school dances, carnivals, raffles, bake sales or trips. These all are great fundraisers, but students may also find them fun to be a part of.

I am me. I am one of laziest procrastinators who would do what is necessary when it’s necessary, maybe. My top three concerns about year are meeting new people, getting used to a college environment, and passing my classes. To be new to a school, especially college, it would be difficult to get in touch with new people. But with help, one can meet anyone who shares similar interests because it’s such a big and diverse campus, which is also another concern. Since it’s such a big school, not everything will be like high school, where you share the same schedules with your friends. In college, probably everyone has a different schedule. And lastly, passing my classes. I do no know the difficulty of classes, but i should expect it to be at a the “college level” all my teachers told me about. This college experience would be different from high school because not everything is handed to you. You have to be the one who has to do what you want to do. I expect little to no help, but I did receive some, especially from my teachers and some classmates. I am hoping that this first year in college would make me more responsible and help me become less “procrastinate” because I know that everything will be difficult. I will try my best to do what’s necessary to make my freshman year resourceful, maybe.

I believe the value and importance of engaging in community service is how people get together to work towards a similar goal together. Not only will it bring about change, but it would also bring a community together, no matter how diverse it may be. If they share a similar goal, these diverse communities would come together to work towards this same goal, making it much easier to achieve it.

For something to work, strong leadership is required. Without a form of leadership, the project that everyone would be working towards would be disorganized and may crumble. A plan should be set that everyone could easily follow would make their projects flow more easier.

We can boost volunteerism and civic participation on campus by showing them the values and importance of engaging in service community. They would be the ones to help bring about the change they want. They may also get along and meet new people from various groups whom they may share similar interests with. If they want change, they have to be the ones to do it.

Jason Shaltiel – A time to serve article response

Community service is an action that is invaluable, when people engage in community service they are doing a selfless act which can sometimes never be repaid. According to an article written on TIME.com the reason why people are volunteering now more than ever is because many believe that the government and public sphere are broken and therefore find it to be within their own duty to do something. Public volunteering is very important in this nation, as a result of public volunteering people can live easier lives because they are gaining outside help from others. Community service is also good in raising nationalism within nation, people will feel a stronger sense of unity and the moral of the nation will increase as well.  Community service is something that everyone can gain from including the people who are engaging in it. Although community service may take up time in one’s day it can benefit that person because when a person engages in community service they are increasing their notoriety as  a good person. A person who contributes in community service can also develop relationships with other who are engaging in community service, whether it’s people who are receiving the support or other who are contributing aid and those connections can open a lot of doors in one’s future.

I believe that leadership isn’t very important in community service but rather organization and unity is. In order for people to do a good job in community service they need to be organized and united under a common or similar goal. I don’t believe leadership is important because community service is something that should be done out of the kindness of one’s heart so that they do a better job, if someone else is instructing others on how to do help others than those who are following will not do as good a job because the aid they are providing is ingenuine.

A way in which volunteerism and civic participation can be boosted on campus is by making it a requirement in order to graduate. Another way in which civic participation can be boosted on campus is by making it more well known to the students, many students actually want to engage in community service but they don’t know how or what to do.

“A Time To Serve” Blog Post by Greg Bloom

After reading through this article, I would say that the value and importance of engaging in community service is to only better our selves. We as citizens are not asked to do much for our country except vote and pay taxes. With that being true, it is only right that we as Americans  try to serve our own people to give back. There are so many problems in this country that could be fixed or bettered if we the people helped out. If we all dedicated some of our time a little bit every now and again then this country can only be a better place to live in. We can boost volunteerism and civic participation on the Baruch campus by all helping out. Having fund raisers to raise money for charities. We can all do walkathones to help support the fight for diseases.  We as smart individual students are all blessed at Baruch and giving back to the community to help those less fortunate is the least we can do.

Who am I? It is the first question in the first class. I’m Mai Matsumoto, I can say only this for sure. I’m not sure who am I but I think I’m I. i won’t be other person and I can’t be a other person. I’m only I.
My top three concerns are; Can I follow the class with understanding, others can understand my English, and class which I want to take, accounting. My English isn’t good, I can understand almost but by minute I can’t, I wish I can understand. I can make my decision by Japanese but it is difficult to me to change English. I wish I will take accounting in future, so I want to take class which will relate with accounting.
I think own power will make more important in Baruch college than in high school. Parents won’t be relating with our schedule or school anymore.
My English isn’t good, but I think my first year at College will change my English to be good.

Who am I?… too late for that!

Literally too late! first, this was suppose to be done yesterday, and second, it’s too late because all of you have already heard my name like 1672 times so far (thanks to Ms.Brown :]) or know me in person, but I’ll just do this post so you guys could get to know me a little better. I’m the loudest one in the class. I am very hyper and that’s probably the reason for me talking 24/8 and being loud. I am very friendly, so don’t think if you come to talk to me I’ll bite or anything(even though I actually do bite…lol jk). Some people find me funny and the rest vote “annoying”. To rate myself, I must say I’m an average kid(as in grades), meaning, if i take two classes: Rocket-Science in NASA and Kinder garden class of playing Rock-paper-scissors, I will end up with a grade of 85 for both classes :o. Alright lets cut this explanations for people who don’t pay attention in class and didn’t get it yet and finally go to my name, I am Faraz, named after the great king…the strongest…the coolest…NO BODY! lol, yeah I wasn’t named after anyone :p. I am Persian!.. like the cat? but not like  “300” version one, because they obviously didn’t have any in that movie :p. Three concerns about freshman year? I honestly don’t know, but just to name some stuff i would say, workout, chill with friends and FIND THE LOVE OF MY LIFE….LOL jk :p, the third one would be  maybe to grow up a little? since I act like a 5 year old :o. I see some differences in in my education already since I moved to college and am not a high school student anymore. Definitely can say they give more work in every class and students HAVE TO study in college, not that I actually sit down and read, but still!. Other than that I could say there are more people in college than high school (usually). I don’t really see me changing a lot! no matter where I am! even though I have noticed myself going through changes lately and NO! college was not the reason, It’s just me having more time thinking about me and my life, all the stupid things that I say everyday, all the things that I do that I shouldn’t have done!  alright this is getting a bit too personal :p. that’s it i guess! feel free to follow me on tumblr: Hate, but Obey!, if you wanna know a bit more about me(even though I don’t write much and it’s mostly picture!)

If you have found a grammar or spelling mistake, please call this number (718)82-… jk. It’s okay you don’t have to call any number just correct it in your mind and we’re good to go! After all, everyone makes mistakes and I’m not an exception!
