Mishkin Art Gallery-Ziqing Yu

To be honest, I was quite disappointed at this visit. Since this gallery is about Jazz music, I was expecting to see some Jazz instruments or some pictures of the big names in the Jazz history. Well, I did see some photos of people singing, but I don’t know who they are nor where they were. Some of the photos are very strong in expressing some sort of emotions, however, since I am not an expert in art, I hate to guess all the puzzle behind the photos. I might enjoy it if it was a regular art show, but I would expect more than just photos in a Jazz gallery.

Freshman Year at Baruch

Freshman year was pretty much what I expected. I have a lot of free time and the work load isn’t that bad. But I spend way to much time procrastinating instead of doing school work.  At the beginning classes were really easy but things started picking up. I think I’m doing pretty well but I could definitely be doing a lot better if I put more time in to studying.

This semester my classes started pretty early, especially having classes at 8:15 on Tuesdays and Thursday. Surprisingly I was only late a couple of times. Sadly, next semester is gonna be a repeat of this because all my classes start super early. Too bad my registration started so late…

Before the semester started a lot of people told me that if I didn’t join any clubs Baruch would be very boring. I ended up not joining any clubs because I wanted to see if I could handle the work freshman year. And to my surprise the semester wasn’t that bad. I had a lot of free time meaning I could get lots sleep. Next semester I’m going to to join a club though so I’ll have more things to do after class instead of just going home.

So far Baruch doesn’t seem that bad and hopefully it  will get better.

Visit to the gallery

Visiting the Baruch gallery enlightened me to look at photos more closely. It’s interesting to learn how different artists takes photos omy jazz musicians. I love the contrast of color and light in the photo on the front of the flier. The photo expressed a strong sense of emotion and viewers can see the Mood . Though some parts were boring, I overall enjoyed the visit.

First semester at Baruch-Maritza Moreno

My first semester at Baruch college was everything i expected and more. Everyone was right when they said college was hard work. At the beginning of the semester i felt overwhelmed with the amount of work that had to be done. However, as the days went by i was able to get the hang of things.  The picture represents the really cool group of friends i have made this semester. I am so glad that i have met such awesome people and got to share this experience with them.  I hope to stay close with them for the rest of my college experience.

I got this picture from :http://abstractionofwords.wordpress.com/2010/04/30/saying-goodbye/

Favorite Workshop-Maritza Moreno

My favorite enrichment workshop was the academic advisement workshop. I really enjoyed this workshop because it helped me with my registration process. Thanks to this workshop i have a better understanding as to what i have to do for the next 3 years of my college experience. It was an interesting and helpful workshop that helped all those who were there.

My favorite enrichment workshops had to be the Baruch Voices. I enjoyed seeing Baruch Voices the first time because I enjoyed the acting. When I was younger, I was into acting so it always sparks a special interest in me when I see people with talent and enthusiasm. The actors on stage had that enthusiasm and expression when they read these monologues, it made you feel like they genuinely felt the things they were reading. They spoke about multiple different topics and showed different emotions. The second Baruch Voices was also a great experience because there was that added anticipation that one of my fellow classmates’ monologue would have been read. Jacob’s monologue was read and I could imagine his expressions as the actor read his words aloud. The monologues were funny, sad, inspiring, touching and personable. The fact that they were real monologues done by freshman seminar students is a surreal thought because I thought they were written out so wonderfully and acted out so perfectly. The monologues were also relatable which was a good thing as well because it made me realize that many other freshmen are going through the same things that I am. Baruch Voices was a wonderful performance to have witnessed twice, and in future years I hope I get the chance to attend again.

Being at Baruch for a little over 3 months now has been a totally new, unexpected experience, though an enlightening one. Over the summer, I was looking forward to college, but no matter how many people warn you and share their experiences with you, nothing can truly prepare you for what college has in store. Although I was prepared to be much more on my own than I had been in college, I realized a lot of the professors actually walk you through the requirements, rather than just leaving you completely on your own, although some do not. I was glad that I had my LC to accompany me through this new nerve-wracking journey, and my fellow classmates definitely made it a more enjoyable experience. College has proved to be as stressful, even more stressful than anyone could have warned me it would be. The amount of work we get is so much more compared to that in high school, especially after an easygoing senior year.
One important skill that you should probably learn and master quickly in college is time management. Without managing your time in a proper manner, you will end up how I was most of the semester, struggling to get assignments done on time. Although there is a lot of work, most times there is ample time to get it completed. If you are balancing school with other things, it would be best to prioritize and decide what is most important, and focus on that first. With school, work, and social activities, it can be easy to lose sight of which activity should be a priority. I also learned that there is a lot of social activities to do on campus at Baruch. On Thursdays, the Vertical Campus is buzzing with tons of people advertising for different clubs or events that they are sponsoring. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was an event every single day regarding Baruch’s community!
All in all, I’ve had a great learning experience at Baruch. The community is wonderful, having many great students, most of which are in my LC, and astounding professors. It definitely is a change from high school, which is what orientation leaders told me time and time again, but really I had to witness it myself. Now that I have I can truly understand what I am getting myself into for the future but college is definitely going to be worth it.

College is exhausting!

Favorite workshop -Diana

I actually really enjoyed going to the Rueben museum. I love ancient stuff, I love museums and everything there fascinated me. Especially the goddess with all those arms holding different weapons. I seriously loved it! I would actually go back on my own because it was that good. I disliked how it was quick and we really didn’t get that much into detail.

My first semester at Baruch College has taught me a lot. Because I only had to attend school twice a week I had a greater incentive to be more productive with my time. I’ve made many friends, attended many school events, and taken many exams. I enjoy most of the facilities and amenities that Baruch College provides its students. The teachers/ professors that I’ve had are all wonderful. I appreciate their help and guidance so much. They make the experience all the more worthwhile.
Next semester though, I’d like to take classes for more than two days a week; I’m contemplating whether or not I should take class 3-4 times a week if my schedule is still this free. So far, so good!! :)

Shout out to my FRO teachers Sharise and Jason!! You guys are lovely… :)
P.S Miami Heat lost to the Knicks AND the Wizards back to back… The Knicks and THE WIZARDS… Congratulations on giving them their second win of the season… They are (2 and 13 now)… See you in the playoffs, maybe… :P

My Monologue…

Music is an important piece of my everyday schedule. I tend to listen to music whenever I have some free time. I even play music in the background while working on tasks, as I am, right now, thinking to myself and listening to Billy Joel. Music helps me focus and zone out most other distractions that would keep my workflow interrupted. Whilst listening to songs I enjoy, I feel as though I am more productive in my work and effort output, regardless of the endeavor.
I am open to many genres of music, but there are genres I truly prefer to listen to as opposed to others, naturally. I enjoy classic rock, hip-hop, and R&B and listen to them frequently, often shuffling between the three music categories to change up the playlist. With each genre I feel a compelling change in my energy. Hip-hop makes me hype, R&B makes me feel mellow, and rock music makes me feel a natural high. Singing along with the songs gives me a warm feeling inside, although I know that I am not a proficient singer. I also know my voice may often irritate others in proximity; however, its hard to refrain from trying to hit those high notes along with my favorite singers, giving me goosebumps. Music is wonderful!! :)
