Most of the things that people find annoying about school don’t really bother me. I don’t love getting up early, being accosted by the unforgiving alarm on my phone, but I don’t mind. Not all of my classes have me hanging on every word, enthralled in the lecture, but that’s okay too. What really truly bothers me is the subway.
Now I don’t want to be ungrateful. The subway has many positive attributes. It gets me to school every day and I am very thankful for that. It’s cheaper than driving into the city, saves money on gas. It’s eco-friendly, less gas is better for Mother Earth. However, it has been the most frustrating part of my day since I came to Baruch. I find it frustrating having to take responsibility for things that truly aren’t my fault. I didn’t oversleep. My alarm rang and I got up, right on time. I got ready, buttoned up my coat and headed out the door, right on time. I walked down to the train station, past the bagel store, past the vet’s office and waited for the train, right on time. I stepped onto the train and smushed myself in like a sardine, careful not to cuddle up to strangers. And then it happens. “There is another train in front of us. We’ll be delayed momentarily and will be moving shortly. Sorry for the inconvenience.” Oh really? Are you? You don’t sound very sorry to me. And now, through no fault of my own, I’m going to be late.
