Voices

To be very honest, I enjoyed the first Voices performance a lot more. While I appreciate the voices of other students very much, I found it a little strange that they would be willing to share certain things with the entire student body–strangers, really. It soon became obvious to me that these monologues were written in the hopes that they would be read out loud for the entire world to hear, and my inner cynic fed on the thought that these monologues were pretentious or, to be frank, attention seeking. But I rebuked myself, as I realized that these judgements were based on my own standards and ideas. Others may have found these monologues to be edifying or even encouraging. I personally find it uncomfortable to speak about my life to others, but that does not constitute as a universal social norm. Once I put that aside, I was able to appreciate the performance a lot more. Baruch needs a creative outlet, and the monologues are a very good way to go about it.

Monolouge

My name is Atika Lynch I’m 18 years old. I was born January 27th so I’m an Aquarius. I was born in Guyana a country in South America that is Caribbean cultured. I have two other sisters and all of us have names that begin with a and end in a. I have a middle name that I strongly dislike and won’t say. Oddly enough anytime my mom buys clothes for one sister she buys three of the same so that we can dress alike, even though were are not triplets, we’re all adults and my sisters are all much older than me. At Baruch I plan on majoring in economics then going on to law school to do corporate law.
I love food I hate a burger that’s not well done, I don’t do pink meat. I hate going to schnipper and having them give me a not well done burger. I dislike sugar free food, especially sugar free ice cream, my sister is a diabetic so there’s a lot of sugar free food in my house. I like going to different restaurants but I’m not adventurous with food. Every year for my birthday I go to a different restaurant with my two best friends and we usually find something crazy to do with the rest of the night and morning. I’m a very hard working and determined person, when I make up my mind to do something I get it done and it’s done at a high level.
I always try to keep myself busy during and after the school year. In my ninth grade year of high school I did Youth about Business at Colombia University, in my tenth grade year I did the best program at NYU, and in my 11th grade year I did Junior Statesmen of America at Georgetown University. During my senior year of high school, I did something that I am extremely proud of, I started a school magazine. This is something that I am proud of because in my school we didn’t have any kind of newspaper that could inform students and so my magazine was able to fill this gap by proving entertainment as well as vital information.

Colm Toibin

I have always wanted to be a published author, so listening to one speak was definitely an experience for me. I didn’t want to attend this seminar, at first, but attending did do me some good. I’m not much of one for asking public questions, but the ones asked did help me look into what it means to be a writer. Creating something publishable doesn’t happen overnight. Many times, it will be years until a work is close to completion. This was an encouragement to me as one who is often discouraged when what I’m working on doesn’t seem to be getting anywhere. It was pretty awesome to see what is behind the glue bound pages of a book.

Response to Colm Toibin

I have to say i actually enjoyed listening to Colm Toibin. At first I thought it would be a stupid waste of time like the rest of the Voices activities, but in the end i actually enjoyed it. I thought it was pretty cool to hear the Author talk about his book and explain to everyone all the thoughts and processes he had to go through to get his book published. I thought it was also really interesting to listen to him portray his home country, Ireland and explain how it relates to his book.
I did not read the book so I could not really ask him any questions, but after listening to him tai about it sounds like an interesting book that maybe during winter break I will read it during my free time. Another very interesting thing that i enjoyed about listening to Colm Toibin was his story about how the daughter of the women the entire story is about came up to him at a book signing and told him the story is about her mother. I think its a very cool thing to write a book about someone and never meet them or really know much about them outside of the story you are telling and then out of the blue meet the daughter of the person you are writing about.
Overall i really enjoyed the whole experience of listening to Colm Toibin talk about his book and i thought the whole experience was very interesting.

Response to Last Voices

Truthfully I really did not enjoy the last voices. I was falling in and out of sleep the entire time and i didn’t understand the point of the exercise. Why did those actors or whatever they were need to read all those monologues. they did not even explain why they were reading all them, they just started reading monologues and at the end they just stopped, without any explanation. I believe the whole voices in general is a waste of time. most of the kids go just because they are forced to go and the ones that want to, which is very very few kids, don’t end up enjoying it because they are pointless exercises.
I think that from now on they should get rid of voices and instead make some kind of workshop that kids can actually learn something about. Truthfully i think they should not have anything during that break on Tuesday ever, but if your going to make some kind of activity at least make it something a little fun or remotely interesting. The last voices really left a bad taste in my mouth as i could not have been less bored. I also learned absolutely nothing and i still don’t understand what the point of the whole thing was. At least explain to the students what the point of reading everyones monologues is, if you are going to make us all sit there the entire break.

Voices Jerry

I thought the presentation was great in terms of performance and time dedicated to the cause. I fully respect the presenters and people who made the assembly happen; however, I found it to be a unnecessary. Although it was enriching and for the most part enjoyable, I did not like the fact that it was mandatory. The fact it was mandatory forced students to sit through a presentation that was essentially useless and unproductive. I appreciated the performers intentions as well as the community of Baruch, but I found it disturbing that we were given no choice but to go to the show.

Voices

I thought that the Voices performance was spectacular. I could tell that the actors really put a lot of time and effort into the whole show. Some of the monologues were very entertaining and the more serious ones were delivered with a lot of emotion. Judging from the response they got from the audience, I thought the actors did a wonderful job. I was very interested in all the stories they presented. I was surprised at how well the authors of the monologues were able to write about their personal experiences in such a way that allowed me to relate to them. I was very glad to be able to see this amazing show.

Voices Response

I actually really enjoyed Voices, despite how uncomfortable some of the monologues presented made me. I felt that many of them were extremely meaningful, and I give major props to the people who wrote them; I don’t think I’d feel so confident telling deep secrets to A LOT of people all at once. My favorite one was the one about the girl who lost her friend. I liked this one because it hit close to home. Before graduation day, my high school class had three people die, and it has made an incredible impact on me. I really liked the way the writer started off, it was very real and you could get a sense of true friendship. I also like the humorous ones, like the bacon one. I was hysterical.

I think that Voices is a very interesting concept because you can get a real sense of someone just by one story they tell. Also, the actors were phenomenal, and the overall presentation of the monologues was very good.

FRO Monologue

My name is Michelle, after “Michelle” on “Full House.” I’m from a small town on Long Island – where everybody knows everyone’s business. I’m at Baruch because I couldn’t afford Pratt Institute in Brooklyn – but I actually do like it here, even though I’m as far from the corporate business type as humanly possible. I want to be a writer and eventually move out to California to be with the mountains and the waves because I’ve always had a dream of moving out west.

Don’t laugh, I’m a world champion baton twirler, ranking 3rd in the world. I’ve been twirling since I’m 4 and still compete in solo events. I love preforming.

I also love music. Like, you have no idea. If I’m not listening to music, I’m reading a rock rag or a book on music or anything like that. Both of the tattoos I have are rock and roll inspired (which is my favorite genre, but I also have a love of Mississippi Delta Blues, 90s alternative and ska).

I try to live my life by something my favorite author, Jack Kerouac had once said: “Live, travel, adventure, bless, and don’t be sorry.”

Lateness Assignment- Overview of 1st Semester

So the first semester of college has almost gone by and i ended up learning more than i thought i would. In relation to school, i’ve finally gotten back into the rhythm of it. I’ve been out of high school for what seems like a very long time (in reality just over a year and a half) and it’s been a very, very long drawn out transition to college.

In the beginning of the year i really despised Baruch. I didn’t like the people, for they seemed to lack most of the same interests as me, which set the mood for my disdain for coming to class. This was my biggest challenge; i ended up coming in late a lot of the time and quickly used up the allotted amount of classes i was able to miss within the first two months. That was a huge mistake, haha. I also felt that my high school was way more difficult and demanding than college (even the classes aren’t that challenging) and it really turned me off to the idea of school in general.

Fortunately something changed, literally of a sudden, and i really began to enjoy the school. It was as if after i legitimately looked into transferring something clicked in me, telling me that i had so much more to learn about this school. So, i’m staying indefinitely.

In another aspect, i got the opportunity to get to know someone in a very intimate setting: my roommate! I realize how much i value having a space that is entirely my own and not shared with another someone sleeping less than three feet away from me at night. Living with my roommate has been a huge challenge. We are admittedly alike in a good amount of ways, but having someone so vehemently close-minded (who doesn’t realize it) is really, really shocking. I’ve been able to realize my limits with people and what i stand for, as well as how to deal with someone in a respectable manner who i can’t stand.

Interesting semester, overall.
