Jaya’s Playlist: Hello, I Am…..

I believe that no person can be defined. There are so many faces, dimensions, and features that make up an individual, I fell we can never really fully explain ourselves to another person. It was actually difficult to find songs that describe me. In this playlist, I attempted to find 10 songs I feel capture some of the things I am passionate about: my religion, family, friends, music, etc.
Merely glancing over my playlist, one will see right away that the songs vary widely. It jumps from religious to Indian classical to reggae with some other varieties in between. I am an open minded person who is no afraid to try new idea and see situations from another person’s point of view. At the same time, I am a very strong, determined person who, when I am motivated to do something, will not take nonsense from anyone to accomplish what needs to be done.
Jason Mraz’s “Geek in Pink” definitely shows the nerdy side of me. In high school (while also known for sporting a lot of pink!) I was usually the one in the corner studying for SAT’s while my friends were playing. Like in his lyrics “I don’t care what you think about me, you’ll get by without me if you want!” my friends know I’m not the type to get caught up in drama. If someone likes me they do, if not, well we just move on. Even during the most stressful moments, I’m the one who is calm, mellow, and take-a-deep-breath-you’ll-be-fine!
In my playlist, there is also some Indian classical and religious music. I play an instrument called the harmonium and I absolutely love it. When I was younger I did not appreciate my mom hauling me to music lessons and making me practice. Now, though, I’m the one waking up 6AM in the morning singing and playing. Recently I had to stop my harmonium lessons and I was very upset. This is something that I enjoy and any chance I get I will play. True professionals can play any song and have such strong vocals it’s unbelievable. My own playing is satisfactory and I can hit certain high notes, but it’s nothing compared to singers such as Anup Jalota, Lata Mangeshkar, and Hari Om Sharan. Then are legends in the Indian classical singing world. One of my favorite styles of singing is raags/tans. These styles are very hard to master, but sound amazing when perfected. Taans are accompanied by the table (a drum) and a special beat rhythm. Zakir Hussain is a world renowned table player. Raags and tans are very beautiful, and when accompanied by a table player, is even more sweet.
