Meeting the Author- Vanessa Gomez

I actually enjoyed the workshop and was intrigued by the author. I found his explanation of how he came about writing the book to be very sincere and interesting. I also found very fascinating that someone found out about his book and knew that the book was written about her mother, even though her real name wasn’t used. What really stood out to me was that the author said that when he came to the United States, his homesickness came very quickly to him and he longed to be home once again. I feel the exact same way at times about my native land, Dominican Republic. I liked his humor. What I didn’t like was that at times he was very repetitious. I could definitely relate to the book because I myself am an immigrant. My first few years here made it hard to adapt to American culture and life, just like Eilis’ time here. I read the book in the summer, which turned out that I didn’t really have to read the book. However, I still enjoyed the book. The problem was beginning the book, as with most books for me. But as soon as I began reading it, I was hooked and could not put it down. I might check out some of his other books, which I’m sure are just as great!
