Another Look at Voices 8D

Posted by Youn Kim in Uncategorized

Throughout this semester, I have been to three different workshops. There was the one about reliable online research, harmful words/phrases regarding sexual preferences, and Voices. My favorite has to be Baruch Voices. It was my second time attending and I had some level of expectation. I’d have to say, I was disappointed with the first few monologues. They seemed dry and too familiar. Not to be a critic or anything, but it started off quite boring.

After the first few, one caught my attention. I think it was the one about a student’s addiction to smoking. The moment the performer “lit a cigarette,” I had a feeling it was going to be different. The student wrote about how he wanted to quit, but there was always an excuse not to. It reminded me of my brother. Everyday he tells me he will stop, but I see no progress.  If I was in his shoes, I wonder what I would do …

The following story was about the birth of a student’s sister. It was very sweet. Although I could not empathize with the writer, I was able to see his love for his new sibling. Others were about relationships with friends and family, addictions, and college.

Starting with writing my monologue to Baruch Voices, I realized people come from a diverse background. Most of my concerns are very simple and can be resolved with some dedication. For others, I didn’t expect them to be enduring such hardships. The story about  a girl cutting herself and hanging out with the “wrong crowd” left me wondering. It must have been very difficult for her open up to her family and friends. She should have tried to resolve her problems without causing more pain.

The only thing that could have made it a better experience was doing away with this one girl. She laughed at everything that was said. There were serious, heartfelt monologues, but she still laughed. Man she was so annoying. She took out the fun in watching part of the show. Otherwise, I had a good time before going to class. I wouldn’t mind seeing Voices again. 🙂

With the upcoming semesters, there are more stories and performances to come.
