My Baruch Experience Thus Far

Budgeting my money

So at the beginning of the semester I really thought I’d budget my money alot better than I actually have been. I thought saving money would be a whole lot easier than it has been as well. Unfortunately, I was so very wrong. The city is ten times more expensive than any other borough (which I knew but didn’t think it would affect me much). I really thought I’d pack lunch everyday and not spend money on food so much. Then I realized I hardly had the time to make/pack lunch for myself and ended up just buying food 80% of the time. I also didn’t realize how long I’d be on campus for. I thought I’d just go to my classes and head back home but after joining a club, staying well past my last class became routine. This made me buy even more food since I was at campus all day long! Basically, all my money went to buying food.

Mishkin Art Gallery

At the Mishkin Art Gallery, there was one extremely interesting photograph. It was an image of just the bodies of a group of, what seemed to be, children. These children were all branded on their chests. The brandings were explicity seen. This one photo broke my heart completely. This image said to me that these kids were not their own. They belonged to someone else, as slaves. They had no authority over their own lives but had to sumbit themselves onto the brander of their bodies. Lately my heart has been breaking for the 2.5 Million people who are exploited and are made slaves today. This photo validated the fact that slavery still exsits now. People are exploited on a daily basis all over the world. This photo sheds light onto a crime that most people ignore or are ignorant about.

Mishkin Art Gallery & Baruch Reflection

Going to the Mishkin Art Gallery, I learned to appreciate art more. I was never an art person so for the first time I listened to the stories behind each painting and enjoyed them. Every painting or photograph in the art gallery had a unique story behind each one and was very significant to the outcome of the piece. Though it was a pretty small art gallery, I felt I learned tons of information. I also feel that when I visit more art galleries, I will be more interested in the story behind other paintings rather than the actual look of the piece.

I feel that this picture represents my time at Baruch because so far, my time here has been the beginning of a journey. Just leaving high school and entering college, I believe I am just beginning a long, drawn out, and thrilling journey. Personally, I have loved the first 3 months of Baruch. I love my classes, I have been able to join clubs, and most importantly, I have made long lasting friends.  There are a lot of different aspects that I need to get used to such as waking up SUPER early and commuting for 3 hours but I know I will get accustomed to everything throughout my 4 years here. Though it’s the beginning of my college career, I have loved it so far and cannot wait to see what lies in store for the future!

College can be pretty hectic at times…like winter and daylight savings throws everything off for the first few weeks – forcing me to manage my time a little better. Then there’s the looming question of your major and what you want to do with your life. <- Here's a little comic of Kadejah's response to her Focus survey results.

Mishkin Art Gallery Reflection

The Mishkin Art Gallery definitely resonated with me the other day. In middle school, I took a class in black and white photography which captivated my interest. I remember the first few days of classes, we made our own camera obscura by taking every day objects that could act as “chambers of darkness”. I believe I selected a regular Quaker oats can as my object of choice, poked a small hole in it, and put photographic paper inside. After going outdoors and taking our pictures, we went back to the darkroom to develop our image. The results weren’t beautiful – the image that came out was somewhat distorted and hazy, but at the time I was around 10 years old and that was one of the coolest thing I had ever done.

If I had the time and money, I would definitely love to get back into photography and drawing. The thing is that materials for any of the fine arts are a bit pricy these days, it completely turns me off. I kind of wished I had more time as well to create art on the side, but lately there’s just no time – or when there is time, I’m too tired and justend up making doodles and sketches.

New York Time Reflection

My group and I chse the topic of Education because it is such a global topic. We knew if we picked this topic, we could easily associate it locally, nationally and throughout the world. This was the main reason we chose Education. Education is also such a broad topic that we were able to find articles so easily. There were so many sub-topics to Education which made this project so much easier.

NYTimes Project Reflection

We chose education as our theme since it seems like the most obvious one. The project in itself was a nice idea and it was fun working with people in my group. Everyone worked well together and we all understood each others ideas. We all got along and ideas and the work flowed well because we were all ok. The project experience overall was just fine. I’m glad i was in a group with them; people who were willing to work an open to change and different ideas.

New York Times Reflection

Our group chose education because it is something that affects us all. We all grew up under the NYC public school system, so we definately have that in common. Most of our articles related to college which is definately something new for each of us.

NY TIMES REFLECTION

Hello everyone, our topic was healthy eating and we researched how people can eat healthier. It is important for us and our children to be healthy, in order to maintain stability over life. Although this project was not really challenging, but more of an informative.

NYT Reflection

I think that our group chose the topic of healthy eating because obesity and unhealthy foods are a serious issue around the world but in the US especially. Our articles were all relevant in terms of problems, solutions, suggestions, etc. to our problem. Personally, I liked investigating this topic since healthy eating has been a very important factor in my life.
