A Saturday at the Met

Living in New York City, there are always new experiences and opportunities around every corner. I think for many of us, however, it is often easy to overlook all that the city really has to offer.

Before settling on visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art this past Saturday, I did some research and I was surprised to see the long list of cultural institutions that our holy CUNY ID can provide us free admission into. The CUNY ID offers admission to not only museums, but also to countless other places such as the Bronx Zoo and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden.

After two stressful weeks of college, where we were bombarded with syllabi consisting of seemingly endless lists of assignments and exams, spending an afternoon at the Met gave me an opportunity to clear my head by immersing myself in art.

Visiting museums has always been one of my favorite pastimes with my friends. Some of my favorite museums include the MOMA, the Whitney, and the New Museum.

We spent about three hours at the Met, which barely made a dent in the number of exhibits the museum had to offer. I can only imagine how many days it would take for someone to explore the museum in its entirety.

We walked around the massive museum and stopped by European Paintings and Asian Art. I was particularly drawn to the Abbey Collection, which featured works of Japanese bamboo art. We studied the intricate sculptures and paintings, trying to make some sense of the meanings behind all of the beautiful artwork.

From three hour gaps in between classes to month long winter breaks, there is a lot more time to explore and discover new things as a college student. Remember to take advantage of everything the city and college has to offer!
