Prepping for Interview

Interviews, interviews, interviews. That’s all it comes down to. That, and being able to satisfy the requirements of whatever you’re interviewing for. Your interview is going to decide on whether you get the job or not. That’s why I decided to go to Target’s Interview Preparation session.

The session was on the 4th floor in a lecture hall. When I walked in, I was disappointed right away because there was no food, but that’s not the reason I was there. I wanted to learn how to have a successful interview, both individual and group. I never had interview experience before, and just the thought of it gave me anxiety. I entered the room about fifteen minutes prior to the start time and found myself a seat. People were filling up the seats quick. I didn’t know that there was going to be so many people.

At 12:40 P.M, the session started. They started off with some brief introduction about themselves and where they worked. Two of the three presenters said they worked at a Target in College Point. There’s only one Target in College Point and it is literally down the block from me. I found that mind-blowing, even though no one really cared.

Anyways, the session taught me a lot about interviews. Some of the information I knew, but others were new and extremely helpful. For example, one of the presenters, Juan, said that non-verbal communication was just as important as verbal communication. By this, he means body language and the way you react to certain things being said. Body language is also tremendously helpful. With the right body language, you can come off as a confident and capable individual. There’s a phrase, “Fake it ‘till you make it.” I find this very accurate because when you fake something, like confidence, people will believe you are confident and that makes you believe you’re actually confident when you started out lacking confidence.

The skills I learned in this session really helped me with seeing what level I’m at with my interviewing skills. I hope to implement the things I learned and do well when I have my first real interview. I am really looking forward to more workshops like this so I can learn ways to better myself.
