Interview Prep Workshop with Target

The workshop did not teach me anything new about the process, however, it reinforced the essential steps to take for a successful interview. I learned that Target provides Baruch students with internships, but you have to be at least a junior to obtain one. The three Target workers advised us to be cocky during our interview and to look the interviewer straight in the eye, hiding all of our nervous habits, such as hand trembling, underneath the desk. The best advice I got from them was to leave no room for questions. It is best if you are brief yet tell your full story. Answer their questions before they even ask. One thing Idid not like from what they said was the advice to “do something you love” because if people do what they love, they usually do not make any money. For my next interview, I know to generate a list of my accomplishments, research the company beforehand, practice, be honest, acknowledge my mistakes, and “sell myself”.  Although the advice they gave us was pretty standard, the workshop motivated me to be confident in myself and start applying for internships to increase my chances for success.

When everyone in the room was introducing themselves, the basic say your name and name your major introduction, I realized that most people in Baruch are here to study Finance. This made me realize the substantial competition at this school. Everyone wants to be in the Finance field, however, not everyone will succeed. After I heard “Finance Finance Finance” circulating around the room about fifty times, I started to think that I might want to change my major. I will be looking into accounting or actuarial science now.

When I went to the STARR Career Center in desperate need to find a workshop to fulfill this assignment, I realized that the center has so many wonderful opportunities that I should definitely take advantage of (after all, I am paying for it).
