USG General Interest Meeting

I’ve always resonated with this famous quote; “be the change you wish to see in the world”.  Making a conscious effort to participate in and contribute to movements dedicated to the betterment of any human experience doesn’t have to begin with grandiose plans- I believe that it can start just by being involved directly in your community. Getting involved is exactly what I aimed to do on Thursday, October 5th. The first Undergraduate Student Government meeting was underway, and I decided to go and see how I could become apart of the organization. I called out of work for the afternoon and made my way to the room where the meeting was being held, excited to finally be an active part of student life on campus.

Seeing the enthusiasm of the student government members during the general interest meeting stirred my own excitement, and I was grateful to have made club life apart of my schedule on that afternoon. In learning more about the way which student government is run, I was able to decide which committees I was interested in joining (the marketing committee in particular grabbed my interest) and also meet new people who I probably wouldn’t have gotten to know otherwise.

We were separated into random groups and given the challenge of building the tallest freestanding structure with only string, spaghetti, and a marshmallow, with the marshmallow on top. My group failed miserably (pictured below), but the process incited so much laughter and creativity that I documented our attempts on Snapchat.

Overall, the meeting was a huge success. Now that I’ve signed up for newsletters to receive more information about future meeting dates and times, I can’t wait to attend my first official meeting and then to hopefully become apart of club life even more beyond this!
