Interview Prep Workshop with Target

We must all overcome the jitters of attending an interview at some point. As business students, it’s an inventible part of landing a career with a company we want. Hence, I decided to attend an interview workshop held by Target key employees. Although the workshop had very important information, I already majority of it. that However, I did learn a something new that I will be using in my next interview.

The meeting began with the employees describing themselves: where they’re from, how long they’ve been working in the company, and how it has helped them grow professionally. After that, they asked the students what their major was and what career path we are planning on taking. It’s important to start planning because a dream is only a dream until you have a set plan for it. Becoming a better interviewee is crucial in the business world. In the presentation they stressed the importance of being confident, concise, and clear. Companies want people that can articulate themselves in a professional manner. Furthermore, I learned about STAR, a method which is aimed to help you organize your story. During an interview you will be asked about an instance in which you were able to achieve a task. STAR is a guide to help you keep your thoughts clear and precise. First, you must have a well-practiced story to talk about. The order of your organization begins with you describing your Situation or Task; then talk about the Actions/ behavior you did to do the task; and you’ll finish off by reflecting upon the situation and talk about the Results, did you meet your goals?  Make sure to be descriptive but get to your point rather quickly. STAR is a simple method to take your interview to the next level.

Make sure to always stay true to yourself and be honest. At the end of the day they don’t want a robot. Make sure to do your research about the company and if possible, the person interviewing you. This shows them that you’re dedicated for the position. You should always be attentive to what the interviewer says, but don’t be afraid to ask questions.

As I mentioned before, I already knew much of the information beforehand. However, I did learn something new that will definitely help me during my next interview. I’m truly taking advantage of the huge resources offered at Baruch. Especially the STARR center, which is geared to help us achieve our goals and land that dream job. Make sure to take advantage of their counseling’s, workshops/events, and guides. If you need any help career-related don’t be afraid stop by, there’s always someone to help.
