On Tuesday, September 19th, I stopped by UNICEF@Baruch’s second general meeting. The meeting was scheduled to start at 12:45 and although I got there a few minutes early, the room was already close to full. When we walked in the room, the club executives greeted us and welcomed us with pizza and drinks.
I have been involved in community service activities and clubs throughout both junior high school and high school and was interested in seeing what UNICEF@Baurch was all about and learning about all the different ways to get involved.
As we took our final bites of pizza, the club board members officially began the meeting. The execs went down the line introducing themselves, explaining their roles and positions in the club, and giving a quick fun fact about themselves.
After the introductions, we watched a quick video which gave us a glimpse into the problems that UNICEF is dedicated to fixing. We learned about UNICEF’s goals and their mission to help children in need all around the world and provide them with resources and opportunities.
The execs then discussed upcoming events and gave us the opportunity to join either the fundraising or marketing committee. We were also given slips that outlined the requirements to be inducted and become an official member of the club.
Before wrapping up the meeting, we did a quick bingo icebreaker and went around the room looking for people with similar characteristics and interests as us. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find anyone born in the same month as me.
The meeting concluded with a group photo. It was inspiring to see the ways UNICEF impacts the world as well as the amount of people who all share a common interest to make a change. I hope to get as involved as possible in events to help make a difference in the community.
