My English teacher had canceled class on October 4th meaning there was a huge gap in my schedule that day. So I decided to come to the Job Search Strategies workshop.
The workshop started with the speaker asking all of us to introduce ourselves by saying our name, year and major. Then everyone picked up two pamphlets filled with information about job search. The speaker was surprised that there were a lot of freshmen in the classroom because she expected college students to care about job searching around the end of their sophomore year. The thing was all of the freshmen there were from our BTB block and had to do our freshmen homework. Moving on from that, she began speaking about the four words that could be used to help us improve our chances of getting jobs. But we all knew about these things like having a neat and professional looking resume, and that there are four ways to look for job opportunities: online, in person, connection, and things like newspapers. However, I didn’t know that a job hunt could take up to an average of 6 months before you land one and that there are hidden jobs, jobs that aren’t publicly known but asked for through connections only. After finishing most of the presentation, the speaker asked us some multiple choice questions and tried to gauge our knowledge on the subject. After that, she told us to pair up with the person next to you to do an informal interview where we asked each other questions on how we would find a job and resources we could take advantage of to better or chances.
I went into the workshop thinking I would learn new things but I knew mostly everything the speaker told us as it was mainly basic ideas. However, the partner I had a talk with told me of the many different resources I could take advantage of in Baruch. The main one was the STARR center which can help us get our first job.
