Joining the Ticker

I have always loved writing and have been interested in being a part of a school publication, so when it came time to sign up for school clubs and activities I immediately gravitated towards the Ticker.

Although I have experience creating and running a newspaper at my high school, I had never written anything in depth in the style of a news publication. Since I only had experience writing shorter articles, I was a bit apprehensive about signing up right away. The sophistication of the Ticker intimidated me a little bit but I wanted so badly to be a part of a newspaper publication again.

I decided to send an email to the Arts and Style section EditorĀ  to let him know that I was interested in writing for the Ticker, but I was not really sure where to start. I was surprised how fast he got back to me (within 20 minutes) and glad to see how welcoming and encouraging he (and the rest of the Ticker staff) were. He told me that I should just jump in and pick a topic to write about and get started.

I happily took his advice and chose to write about up and coming fall music releases. I spent the next weekend doing some research about all the artists that were scheduled to put out new music in the next couple months, and typed up the longest article I had written so far in my career.

The next week I was ecstatic to see my article published and printed in the school’s newspaper. Although I do not believe I will continue as a Journalism major like I had planned when I first came to Baruch, I still enjoy being able to write about thins that are relevant to and interest myself and my classmates. I am very happy that I was able to get started so easily in a club that I will enjoy being in the rest of my years at Baruch, with many great people to work with and get to know.
