My time in New York City almost neared forty five days, and I was already putting all my time and effort in my courses- sociology, history, communications, english and maths. Around that time I had my History midterm approaching and I was overwhelmed by all the facts and timelines that the course offered. A friend of mine, who had been living in the city for a while, saw my trouble and reminded me that i can get free access to the museums around the city.
It was a Saturday evening, my friend and I took a bus from my dorm and headed straight to Central Park where the museum was located- The Metropolitan Art Museum. As I entered through the hallway, I knew it for real that I was about to walk past in time that excited me. We started off with the Egyptian empires of the pharaohs where the museum had the tombs and mummies of the deceased. These were the materials I’ve read so much about during my third grade in school- now the pieces of art were displayed in front of my eyes. As we kept on moving we realised the exhibition was organised in a chronological manner.
The Dark Ages display followed the Egyptian era, and then the Medieval ages to the age of renaissance. Soon we arrived at the gallery that displayed the pre modern era, that related to my midterm. I walked past paintings dated back to the 14th century Europe, beside each painting there was written its reference in time of history. With each work of art I looked at, I was able to relate to my course and get a better, enriched understanding of history. Not only did it help my course work seem more interesting but the exhibition also helped me get inspired by the pieces of art work and helped me take ideas of those work that I hope I’ll apply in my next painting.
