On Thursday I went to Baruch Voices, where all of the winners from each freshman seminar class performed their monologues. Some monologues I really liked while others I did not. From that experience, I realized that delivery is very crucial to gain the audience’s interest and it automatically improves the whole performance. I went to cheer on Tammy, and while her performance was really good, other ones stuck out as well. There was this boy that spoke about his passion for Popeyes. He really connected with the audience. One distracting thing, however, was that he had his hat over his face while on stage, so I never got to see who it was. Another girl spoke about how people stereotype her based on her race however she is not “regular” and she pointed out all of the extraordinary things about her and how she defies the stereotype. Her delivery was excellent. That one was one of my favorites. Another kid created a rap which turned to a controversial topic real quick. Another one was very deep and serious. The guy talked about being jailed, beat up, suicidal, etc. making the audience feel strong emotions, however, at the end, he said it was all a joke. I had mixed feelings about that one bc it really was not something to joke about.
This event was a good way to bond with my classmate and get to know everyone better, especially the performers, who shared an intimate part of themselves with the audience. I had a hard time picking the winner because a lot of the performances were so good. It was my first time experiencing a Baruch event like this and I am so glad I went. I will probably go to some more in the future, but for now, we have so much work to do for all of our classes.
