Looking through the available workshops on the Starr Development Center website, I found one that stood out to me. We had previously talked about how Linked In is like a Facebook for the business world in fro class. I’ve always seen Linked In everywhere but never exactly knew what it was so I RSVP for this workshop. Sitting in this workshop, I learned how Linked In can open up lots of networks and opportunities for jobs in the future. Business and companies look at our profile to see whether or not they want to reach out to us. In this workshop, I learned how to include a meaningful summary and experience we’ve had. He compared it to a review of a restaurant. If a restaurant doesn’t have any reviews or pictures to showcase what this restaurant is, most likely, people would not feel intrigued by the store. Just like our profile, having experience and listing the type of experience we have is beneficial to us. Instead of saying we worked at Chase, we would state what our position was like human resource manager of Chase. Furthermore, like a restaurant, having a good picture can attract companies and people. One’s profile needs to be appealing for people to include them in their network. Sitting in this workshop, I learned how important one’s Linked In profile is because the way we lay out our profile is how one will view us and consider us as possible candidates. People don’t open up their network and connections to just anyone.
Baruch offers workshops and info sessions for their students which I think is very useful for us because it informs us of networks in the business world and what the basic things are. Having resources that can connect us to companies will help us obtain jobs and opportunities outside of school that can be a head start to our potential career. Realizing this, I think I will go to more workshops and info sessions that Baruch has to offer because they’re very useful and gives an eye opening view of what the business world consists of.
