Last week, I attended the cover letter workshop. In this workshop, I was informed on how to make a presentable and effective cover letter. I was provided an overview of a cover letter and shown how to make it all flowery and nice. There are some words that make a person sound that much more credible which are very important in including in a cover letter. I learned that the way you structure your sentences make all the difference in an employer’s head. Since many students don’t have cover letters, this workshop was beneficial and effective in teaching people how to put themselves into an outside world using easy techniques. One of many is to not make a cover letter too wordy and a replica of a resume. Additionally, since resumes are essential in our every day life, it seems as if our life depends on a piece of paper with our work experiences on it. But the truth of it lies in how you portray yourself and how you make your resume and cover letter. I was informed on how to spend my time at Baruch and how to get the most out of the school. It is important for me to be rounded as a whole individual rather than just focusing on my GPA. The presenter had stressed the importance in going out and having experiences such as volunteer, clubs and internships. These little things could make all the difference and land someone into a good career. This workshop was very interesting and helpful in teaching me how to make myself look and sound smarter in my future career endeavors. I realized that my current resume and my current cover letter isn’t enough to land me a good position in a good workplace. In the future, I am going to resort to the STARR writing center in helping me perfect my resume.
