For the last and final blog, a few classmates and I went to Baruch Voices to support our girl Tammy. Not only was this a wonderful experience, but I was able to learn something new about others’ life stories and experiences. When we first got there, we were expecting to sit down for a little bit and then leave, but as we started to hear several motivational speakers, we decided to stay and listen. There was this one young black girl, with a bomb outfit and luxurious hair, who I thought was the best one there, sorry Tam. The way she organized and delivered her speech was compelling enough for me to scream out “YES GIRL!” Her monologue was about how people perceive her as an uneducated black female, and how she uses that stigma of people assuming who she is to empower her. Some assume that just because she is black she cannot tell when a derivative exists. She also, talked about how her melanin radiates and outshines those negative comments. In another monologue the person completely made a joke out of the whole thing, by describing how he was abused in the past, gone to jail and even attempted suicide, only to finish off with this was all a joke. Looking back at it, it should not have been that funny since there are people who do suffer with that. Furthermore, I was finally able to hear Tammy’s beautiful monologue about her past with dancing. Although she is no a professional dancer, this is one of her ways to cope with things during hardships. Once Tammy went up, my group and I decided that it was time to go, so we left.
